'20 Harvard C Austin Gentle (transfer)

Hope he comes here. Expect he will challenge for a starter position somewhere on the line. Experienced. Bright mind. Fierce competitor. Could pick up the keys to make the line blocking Calls quickly I suspect. Be a great get IMO. Being second ranked PFF center in all of FCS isn’t anything to sneeze at.

Have any of you seen him play at any level.? Played on Tn HS state championship teams.

A high level portal guy pretty much is expected to start when they’re brought in.
Typically but is this guy "high level" or someone looking to play with his brother for his home state team in the SEC before he does whatever his Harvard degree trained him for. That would be the question. But I would hope that even high level portal guys are told they will compete just like everyone else, because that is the truth. No good coach is going to let someone play when he has a better player available on the bench assuming no other issues.

Agreed.. I think Gentle would be a lot like Kitselman... expected to compete for a job and push the young guys. If it works out it works out if not meh... We won't be throwing the bank at him and it will come down to what his motivation is for entering the portal. Does he accept he is not NFL caliber and just wants to come home and play with his brother his last year and let the chips fall where they may? If so toss him a 100k and a scholly and he is happy. If he wins the job he wins the job if not at worst he's a good mentor. If he is trying to prove he can play at a higher level then he should probably go somewhere with a clearer path to the job? That being said... what have seen even from our young centers? When Cooper is out who gets the most snaps at center? I don't have a PFF account but I'm pretty sure its not been Satterwhite and Lang outside of garbage time. Hasn't it been Dayne?

I think he could probably push someone else to guard but for him I think its center or bust.

Interesting grad transfer possibility. Has twin brother also at Harvard. Father is attorney.
Getting offers from Toledo, UAB and others. Played center for 2 years. Brother Carson may get some playing time on Vol defensive line next season. Would be great to get as a PWO transfer portal guy with NIL

Walk ons are kinda going out the window with the new 105 roster limit. Tennessee had 123 players this year

The scholarship limit is 85. The total number of players on your roster moving forward is capped at 105. So basically you get 20 non scholarship players. Would cut 18 walk ons from this year's roster for Vols
What an awful rule - why not allow your students the chance to participate in all aspects of your university? Walk ons rarely ever play so what’s the purpose in limiting them?

The 105 cap is part of the NCAA deal they have cooked up that has not been approved by the judge yet. It is also a lawsuit awaiting to be filed by multiple parties if it does get her approval.
