Has CBJ ever had to fire a staff member?

Chavis is a SAINT. You take that back!

But really, I have to respectfully disagree with your assessment of Chavis' secondary play. So would Eric Berry, Deion Grant, Gibril Wilson and Jason Allen.

Look at the facts. Lsu has manimals all over the field on defense. Last year alone Lsu gave up 30 points in the final 3 minutes of the game vs Bama, Clemson, s.carolina, and Texas am combined. Gotta love the prevent. I'm glad he is there. If you really miss him, just watch a game late vs Lsu and they have a slight lead. Should jog your memory some.

Last year by ponts per game.

Tennessee 31.6 87th in the country.
Lsu 22.5 22nd in the country.

The last year we had Cheif in 08.

Tennessee 16.8 10th in the country.

Lol. That is your argument? That Lsu held opponents to around 8 points less than us last year. We had no offense, we had no talent in secondary and Lsu (who is in top 5 recruiting dl, lb, secondary every year) bettered our defense by 8 points. Ok, you just proved my point. Ty

Not arguing just pointing out that the last time we had a top 10 defense Cheif was our DC.

Actually since then we've only craked the top 50 once. Been in the triple digits a couple of times too.

ps...the offfense in 08 was the worst I've ever seen at UT.

In all fairness you really can't fire anyone when you are depleted in talent across the board. I think Mike B. is a very good spread OC. My concern comes at the defensive end. Other then Thing I'm not sure what we really have on the defensive end in terms of coaching.

Chavis is horrible. His defenses consistently under achieve even with some of the best defensive recruits in the nation each and every year. I recall when he was with ut of us consistently giving up big play after big play. Our secondary never could cover a deep square in under his watch(refer to sec championship game vs Lsu if u need a reminder). Almost every lead was in jeopardy late in the ball game due to his conservative prevent defense. I remember it being a running and sad joke each time we had less than a td lead with 3 minutes to go in a game.

C'om man ! The Chief has coached two NC defenses !

How loyal is CBJ? Hypothetically, lets say we don't do very well this season.

Does he shake up staff?

1st lets look at the talent we have and just graduate this past season, then think about the 1 statement made by Ja'Wuan James about lifting so I think what else. How many game 2011,2012 did we look good the 1st half only to be out played in the 2nd half, its simple as the players was not in shape, physically or mentally.

And then you start a thread before the 2nd year of CBJ after a top 5 recruiting and in the middle to land another top 5 of better.

CBJ will make the right decisions on coaching, players and any staff that doesn't share or work towards a NC.

So go pack sand until we can see the results of multiple years of good recruiting and a discipline team, players play, coaches coach. :eek:k:

or was that because those coaches wanted go somewhere else?

My main concern has always been our oc.

Alabama and florida have new o.c's.

If their offensive unit produces more than tennessee, then i think bajakian needs to move on.

Kiffin and roper are no dummies either.

Great players can make any coordinator look like a genius. The X's and O's are easier to draw up when you have great "Jimmys and Joes."

All the great coaches were great recruiters before they were great coaches.

So far, so good, on "job number one" for the current Vols staff.

The Defensive coaches will look brilliant once the talent comes in... Hard to look great with little talent and no speed

Some assistants always go before the HC should they get a pinch... Called buying time or CYA.. We don't that at all.. Stability and elite recruiting is what is needed
Some assistants don't "always go before the HC should they get in a pinch." That is why Cutcliffe was fired at Ole Miss. He lost Eli, and the next year a bunch of close games, and the AD demanded heads. Cutcliffe said that it was not their fault and refused to fire anyone. So, they all lost their jobs.

Anyone who trashes Chavis' as an SEC DC, did not pay attention to our 2002-2008 seasons where our offense would consistently go into gridlock and be saved over and over by the D. 2008 seemed to be the year of no more bailouts for yet another weak (horrible) O, and it cost Phil.

Les Miles snatched him up immediately and their Ds have been pretty sick since 09’.

We could do a whole lot worse than Chavis if a new DC were hired. Who knows if he is willing to recruit hard enough for Butch tho?

I remember when Chavis was here. Everyone wanted him gone. Now they want him back?

This. He got unfairly lumped in w the team failure When we got Cut back the O actually worked and we were competing w the big boys again.

Ron Zook called Florida and wants his job back! I know he wasn't a coordinator but if his coordinators were looking like geniuses he would still be coaching in Gainesville.

He coached one national championship at tennessee. Where was the other one from? He was dc jan 5, 2009 at Lsu.

If you think chief is a bad dc then you don't know squat! There is a reason almost every team goes into prevent mode at times. It is because statistically it works. He is well regarded as one of the top DC's in all of college football by people who know far more about football then you or I.

As it stands I don't have that much faith in Jancek or Bajakian. I don't feel like either of them have proven that they have what it takes to be a coordinator at an SEC school, and while I know they were lacking in talent last year, there were times when they made some extremely questionable calls.

That being said, I think this year is their year to prove me, and others who feel the same way, wrong by showing that they can do something with young talent.

I'm not asking for an SEC championship, but there has to be some improvement or it's time to start entertaining the though that these two are not going to cut it for the level of play necessary to compete in the SEC.

But as a HC, you have to make those hard decisions. Do you think CBJ would can his friends if it meant him still having a job?

I hope he would if needed. I get he is friends with them and all but that cannot be a contributing factor. If neither Bajakian nor Jancek can improve then I would hope CBJ would think more about what's best for the program than his friendship with them.

Agree with all of this and I feel the exact same way.
