Chavis is a SAINT. You take that back!
But really, I have to respectfully disagree with your assessment of Chavis' secondary play. So would Eric Berry, Deion Grant, Gibril Wilson and Jason Allen.
Last year by ponts per game.
Tennessee 31.6 87th in the country.
Lsu 22.5 22nd in the country.
The last year we had Cheif in 08.
Tennessee 16.8 10th in the country.
Lol. That is your argument? That Lsu held opponents to around 8 points less than us last year. We had no offense, we had no talent in secondary and Lsu (who is in top 5 recruiting dl, lb, secondary every year) bettered our defense by 8 points. Ok, you just proved my point. Ty
Chavis is horrible. His defenses consistently under achieve even with some of the best defensive recruits in the nation each and every year. I recall when he was with ut of us consistently giving up big play after big play. Our secondary never could cover a deep square in under his watch(refer to sec championship game vs Lsu if u need a reminder). Almost every lead was in jeopardy late in the ball game due to his conservative prevent defense. I remember it being a running and sad joke each time we had less than a td lead with 3 minutes to go in a game.
How loyal is CBJ? Hypothetically, lets say we don't do very well this season.
Does he shake up staff?
In all fairness you really can't fire anyone when you are depleted in talent across the board. I think Mike B. is a very good spread OC. My concern comes at the defensive end. Other then Thing I'm not sure what we really have on the defensive end in terms of coaching.
Some assistants don't "always go before the HC should they get in a pinch." That is why Cutcliffe was fired at Ole Miss. He lost Eli, and the next year a bunch of close games, and the AD demanded heads. Cutcliffe said that it was not their fault and refused to fire anyone. So, they all lost their jobs. Some assistants always go before the HC should they get a pinch... Called buying time or CYA.. We don't that at all.. Stability and elite recruiting is what is needed
Great players can make any coordinator look like a genius. The X's and O's are easier to draw up when you have great "Jimmys and Joes."
All the great coaches were great recruiters before they were great coaches.
So far, so good, on "job number one" for the current Vols staff.
He coached one national championship at tennessee. Where was the other one from? He was dc jan 5, 2009 at Lsu.
But as a HC, you have to make those hard decisions. Do you think CBJ would can his friends if it meant him still having a job?
As it stands I don't have that much faith in Jancek or Bajakian. I don't feel like either of them have proven that they have what it takes to be a coordinator at an SEC school, and while I know they were lacking in talent last year, there were times when they made some extremely questionable calls.
That being said, I think this year is their year to prove me, and others who feel the same way, wrong by showing that they can do something with young talent.
I'm not asking for an SEC championship, but there has to be some improvement or it's time to start entertaining the though that these two are not going to cut it for the level of play necessary to compete in the SEC.
