Has the concept of dressing professional in public service jobs been completely discarded now?

I did the same for several years and it allowed my wife to stay at home with our small children. She also took care of the food and house cleaning so when I got home we had the rest of the evening to spend as a family. We felt like it was the right choice for us at the time and that our QOL was better as a result.
Not that you need my approval but...you did the right thing!

We have a guy that “works 55-60” per week. He manages to get 8.5 per day at work but always manages 10 at his house on a Saturday. Then more on Sunday. I’ve mentioned it to the owner. He does nothing about it. Super frustrating.
I take it this isn't a job he can do from home?

I'm headed home from vacation. We stopped in some ice cream shops while we were gone. We did not find the one OP was referring to. The search continues

A previous employer, we had a sales guy that was 4 hours away from the office and about 3 or 4 times a year he would poke his head out and produce some evidence of working. He got approximately 1/10 the amount of work done as those of us in the office. The whole office knew what was going on but the president of the company did nothing about it. That was very frustrating, and it amazes me that a normally very intelligent owner of the company would be hoodwinked like that. The guy must have had an amazing con game.

It also doesn't help that the gov't taxes the piss out of you when you work overtime.
Not really. It might seem that way though since you might go into a higher tax bracket. Your withholding might increase.

In the end you pay the same as someone who make the same as you, but who does not work ovetime. All earned income is treated the same.

True, but the appearances are terrible

OTOH, if the employer fails to increase Withholding the employee will have a miserable tax day: something most people hate.. And the employer has no other choice other than withholding the required amount.
These days almost everyone uses a computer program for payroll and related taxes.
