Has the concept of dressing professional in public service jobs been completely discarded now?

My company allows unlimited OT (to an extent) and we recently hired a guy that acts like he's better than everyone because he works 50-55 hours a week. He called his 7-3 shift "silly." I just think he's a moron. Like alright man if you want a ****** QOL thats on you. I'll work my 42 hours and be happy.

Does he have a ****** QOL?

I probably can't say. Don't know him well enough yet. I know I wouldn't be happy working his schedule, but people want different things out of life.

I think people also go through different phases in life. There was a time I worked mad hours. I didn’t consider my QOL at that point poor, but it was a tough stretch. I also wouldn’t want to do it now but if I had to do it over I would do that stretch the same way.

I did the same years ago. 60 or 65 hour weeks for weeks on end. The extra cash helped lay the foundation for a good QOL later.

Strongly disagree with this statement. Here in my area we have good factory job paying $22-30 an hour that can't get people to show up or last more than a day. They simply don't wanna work! These same jobs were paying $12-18 pre COVID.
Maybe people dont want to work ****** jobs?

Competition for employees.

Same here. When I was younger I didnt give a ****, worked pretty much every weekend, holiday, everytime we needed an extra body I would volunteer, I was always my bosses first call when someone called out, but now absolutely not. I'll do my 40, maybe a little more depending on the circumstances and im out. Also, dont call/text me about work unless its super important if you do you arent getting a response until the morning.

I did the same for several years and it allowed my wife to stay at home with our small children. She also took care of the food and house cleaning so when I got home we had the rest of the evening to spend as a family. We felt like it was the right choice for us at the time and that our QOL was better as a result.

We have a guy that “works 55-60” per week. He manages to get 8.5 per day at work but always manages 10 at his house on a Saturday. Then more on Sunday. I’ve mentioned it to the owner. He does nothing about it. Super frustrating.

I have no problem with this situation. I’m not a huge fan of mandating a crap ton of overtime because of mismanagement at the top.

Hell no. I'd be pissed.

I'd be going off about it every day. That's complete BS

How would someone's overtime be anyone else's concern,as long as all staff were offered the same opportunity?

I would go a step further. Not everyone even needs to be offered the same opportunity. Sounds like we are discussing a small business here since the owner was mentioned. Don’t like your deal, go talk to the owner. I’m sure he likes making money. Explain to him how you can help him make more if you make more.

The problem is that I am this guys manager, I have went to the employee and finally had to take it to the owner because He isn't doing quality work for the pay. So it is my concern when I am responsible for the work of my office. When the owner doesn't want to stop it there is nothing I can do.

If you are his manager aren't you responsible for managing his time?

I am responsible for giving him work and the work being done in an appropriate time. I relay information and my thoughts on employees to the owner of the company and allow him to make a decision. I do my job overseeing 30 employees. If the owner of the company will not make agree with me, there isn't much I can do. He has to confirm the hiring and firing of people. Eight years ago this same employee was caught doing work for a competitor, was fired and then brought back 2 weeks later by the owner.

Sorry to hear, that's a bad situation you're in. If you're going to hang a manager title on someone you need to let them manage otherwise morale suffers when you won't let them do their jobs.

I see, I thought you were referring to a coworker. You're in a tough spot.

I still want to show up at work one day dressed as that shining example of capitalism, the Once Ler

A good friend of mine who's a plant supervisor was telling me that they cant get hardly anybody to work overtime anymore, even when it pays time and a half and sometimes even double time. He said millennials and some Gen Z'ers simply value their time way more than they value money. He said this was not the case 15-20 years ago.
See a lot of this at my job too. Majority of guys in their 20’s will call in sick for their OT shifts.
