Has the talent capped under Butch?

It had nothing to do with them going away from what got them there right? Calloway had over 100 and Tennessee had no answer. Florida got cute and pulled a Tennessee and Tennessee finally took advantage lets not look through one set of glasses here.

You know they didn't quit if you watched the game.

They 100% quit

Didn't you say at one time that before the Vandy loss, he was all but gone to a team with a sitting coach? Since the offseason HC moves and recruiting are over, any more details you can share?

I didn't say he was all but gone. What I did say IIRC, was that he was being flirted with by a prominent school that he would leave for in a New York minute. That was before the SC and Vandy losses. He hurt his stock tremendously this year. So much so that it would take a really special year next year for him to regain some of that lost luster.

I know for a fact he would have left had anything palatable come available this year. I think he'd have to have a great season before that would be available after next season. I'm not sure who you're referring to when you say TN blooded coaches though.

May have not been best choice of words, "Tennessee-blooded..." ALL I meant was a coach that better fits the UT culture. Butch doesn't fill the shoes of the Tennessee mystique; not in the fans' eyes, not in the donors' eyes, not in the eyes of pedigree. We've all tried, we've gone out of our way to support him, but he is a square peg in a round hole. Doesn't change the fact I like the guy and want him to be successful. But, odds are stacked against him for any kind of lengthy tenure. Especially since my gut feeling is he was hired as an interim, bring in enthusiasm and work ethic to right the ship. Then hire another HC to get UT back on top.

Personally, I can't shake the idea of Cooter coaching our team, coming home and being here for a decade or more.

Butch has all the reason to be successful this year. The success improves his stock. We may actually win the East, might show up in the SECCG. But, it'll be a mutual parting of ways thereafter.

Ok thanks. It was awhile ago, so I forgot how strong the wording was.

You and I are very close to how I feel and what I think happens. I think it could go another year though.

I think it's too early to tell. I think the '18 class will reveal whether he has reached his potential. The '17 class was supposed to be the year and it turned out very average. IF it's similar class next year and a lot of the in-state talent leaves the state, I think the writing will be on the wall that recruits have lost faith that Butch will ever get it done. I realize being highly ranked by the recruiting sites isn't the end all of being a championship winning program but you cannot argue with statistics. The consistent championship teams always recruit in the top 5-10 every year. I think Butch is a very hard worker and is a great closer but I think to this point he's had some very average recruiters on his staff. Also, I think he's been hampered by things out of his privy such as the lawsuit.

Regardless, Butch will be here for at least two more years barring a total collapse. Remember, the wheels of this university turn very slow and they have little foresight into ramifications. They also tend to make decisions based solely on the financial side and they always error on the side of caution when ot comes to hiring and firing coaches. Everybody may as well strap it on and hope Butch can take it to the next level because don't expect the university to focus on a winning program. It is simply not a priority.

Can't argue with this. 2018 recruiting will be really great if the Vols play great in 2017.
