After rewatching the episode, I think it was very well done. I still find myself being a little underwhelmed with the Night King, but I think maybe his army was always supposed to be scarier and of more concern than he was. Outside of how little action there was involving the Night King and the White Walkers, I enjoyed the episode.
I went into it thinking that the good guys were gonna get destroyed......and then Melisandre showed up and gave the Dothraki fire swords and it got me thinking "Maybe they're gonna pull this off." The Dothraki charge (from Jon and Dany's viewpoint) was very impressive.....and then they just got wiped out in no time at all. I'm back to fearing for the lives of the good guys. Then the wave of Wights hits and I'm thinking "Damn. That's not good." They can't get the trench lit because Dany can't see it from above (things are looking bleaker by the moment) and then Melisandre to the rescue again, the trench erupts in flames, and the onslaught is staved off until.....
Here comes the Night King, the Wights build a zombie bridge over the flames, and they commence to just wiping out everyone. All of our heroes are showing signs of giving up. Jon gets after the Night King, and all he does is claim all of our fallen good guys. We can't win. Even as we are fighting (and finishing off a chunk of the Night King's army) we're just adding to his numbers at the same time because he's going to resurrect all of our fallen to join his cause. At this point, I was really starting to wonder if they weren't just gonna wipe out everybody and we were gonna have to choose between the Night King and Cersei.
I enjoyed the pacing of the episode, I enjoyed the good/bad roller coaster of how the battle was looking for the good guys, and the musical score was awesome.
Can't wait for tonight's follow up.
