HBO's True Detective

This season was just a bad experience all around.

The finale was definitely the best episode of the season, which is essentially the tallest midget in the circus. It had it's tense points for sure, and there were several instances where I had no idea what was going to happen and was genuinely curious.

Unfortunately, they went the route of your stereotypical mystery/suspense. Kill off all the main characters at the end of the movie when they are just about to make it to victory, but allow one sliver of hope so you can believe justice will be served.

Basically, they 100% ripped off the ending to The Departed.

Not sure I agree with that. He was attempting to create his own sweeping noir story - endings like this are a staple of the genre, and have been for decades before The Departed. We can debate all day as to how successful it was; it definitely wasn't incredibly good, but it seems like the overall opinion ranges from terrible to decent. I also thought it was pretty widely known that Pizzolatto "re-appropriates" a lot of material from other works into TD.

There wasn't anything in the TD finale that was as moronic as the rat on the balcony. I think shoehorning that awful symbolism into the movie is the worst thing Scorsese has ever done.

It was awful. The last minute relationship between Ray and Ani was completely contrived. Frank getting taken out by the mexicans of all people was just dumb, especially how it played out. Of ALL the different things Ray could have done when he found out his car was lojacked, driving up to the mountains and attempting to outrun a group of mercenaries was what he went with?! He couldn't have out maneuvered an SUV with his sports car for crying out loud?

Ray and Ani wasn't contrived at all. It was two lost souls haunted by their past finding comfort in each other in a hopeless situation. I thought Ani and Frank's wife living on with Ray's child was very well-done as well. Really, all four characters were tortured by their sexual inadequacy.

I think the implication with Frank and the Mexicans was that the bakery guys tipped them off. He was too prideful and paid for it.

I agree with you on Ray. The forest scene was good but the circumstances leading up to it were pretty bad writing.

JMO, though. This season may have been a bloated mess at times but it's still pretty interesting to examine it in retrospect.

Finale was androphobic and misandric.

Hated the finale. Should have ended it after they killed the Russians. So cliche for Farrell to go back and get got. Of course Frank dies because nearly every anti-hero mob boss since Scarface has to die for some stupid ****ing reason.

The "he has a kid with his last minute lover" was kind of cliche as well.

I finished season 1 the other night and just want to say that it was awesome. Great show and I will probably watch it again. The last episode was pretty scary/awesome.

I might watch season 2. Worth it? Or is it really that much worse. I just have heard it wasn't that great. Thanks!

I gave up on season 2 after 4 episodes.

If you are that bored and just want to binge watch it then go for it, otherwise it was darn awful. If an insomniac ever needed something to watch to put them to sleep I'd recommend that season of the show.

aaa.. I've probably got better things to watch. Shame though. Thanks man.

I have been sitting on season 2 for a while. Is there anyone here that liked season two? Is it just Bad or bad compared to season one? I've never had any expectation for it to be that good. Season one was easily one of the best shows I've ever seen.

I thought it was decent enough. Certainly pales to Season 1, and is nothing like it.

Good I will give it a shot. It is simply impossible to touch season one That was some of the best writing, plotting, pacing, and acting I've ever seen.

I thought it was pretty good. It was far from being must see TV but it was interesting enough of a show to watch while waiting on football season.

Plus it's just 8 episodes long. Not like you're investing to watch 20+ hours of TV.

It's fine. Just overstuffed for an 8 episode run.
