HBO's True Detective

I don't really think they did a good job of making some of the primary players in the conspiracy stand out. For example, they mentioned Burris last episode but I had no idea who that was until I made the face connection during the last scene. It could be why it's failed to hit home for a lot of people, especially since the plot is so dense and people are viewing it weekly rather than binging.

Personally, I think S2 is finishing far stronger than S1 did in terms of plot. The dialogue is clunky, but it's looking that's just the kind of writer Pizzolato is.

Completely disagree about this season finishing stronger.

I'm not saying the season is better as a whole, but relatively speaking it's peaking at the end while S1 was at its best in the middle. S2 sucked at the beginning. JMO of course.

The best part of this season is nowhere near as good as the worst part of last season

From a plot standpoint, season 1 really did fizzle out. It was cool in terms of character development, but the way the mystery unraveled left a lot to be desired.

All those weird clues throughout the season were completely meaningless. Just before the finale I was thinking it was on the verge of being the smartest show ever, and then it just turned out to be a great show.

The S1 mystery hooked me from the beginning. I was pretty disappointed when the mystery was sidelined. Then the majority of the internet changed its mind after weeks of proclaiming it as the greatest theorycrafting show since Lost and said it was about the characters all along. Rust and Marty were awesome characters, yeah, their rapport was a distant third or fourth on my list of reasons for watching it.

It still ranks very high on my list for the direction (the best I've ever seen on TV) and acting alone. The setting was incredibly unique as well.

I think NP may have tried to do too much in this season, but I can definitely respect the ambition. It just came across as clunky at first, and the mystery didn't really invite the viewer in until recent episodes (and to many people, never will). I'm not really sure what people wanted from this season. Another southern Gothic without Fukunaga was destined to be a failure. I'm a fan of there being a different type of detective story each season, and I think it's a pretty good noir up to this point.

I didn't expect the same thing from last season, but I expected more than what's looking like to be a drawn out episode of Law & Order. I also expected better acting and dialogue, and outside of Ferrell and sometimes McAdams, it's been pretty bad.

That's fair. I'll also say that if it requires reading a buzzfeed article for 90% of people to understand the show, the writers have done something wrong or tried to do too much.

I need to finish season one of this. I got it for Christmas last year and watched the first 4-5 episodes, and love it. I just haven't had the time, and have been watching other stuff.

Also recently got HBO so I can watch season 2.

Did you read this thread or anything online about this season? It would have saved you some money if you had.

They threw out like two names in this last episode and I'm thinking to myself "who the **** are they talking about, oh yeah, that's right, I don't care at this point and it's probably not going to make a difference if I know who they are anyway."

The best part of this season is nowhere near as good as the worst part of last season

The best part of this season is that it's ending.

They really built it up, especially in this last episode, to where I'm pretty sure everyone dies in the finale.

I disagree. If you just watched each episode of GoT one time and didn't read the books or discuss the show on message boards then there is no way you would be able to keep up with everything.

It's a byproduct of not dumbing down the product for a CBS audience. We were reading buzzfeed like crazy for last year's True Detective.

You obviously didn't check the internet much when Lost was on then.

That show sucked ass and I stopped watching like 3 episodes in. I was pretty sure it was going nowhere....so yeah, I didn't check the internet for those conversations, LOL

BTW, I think I am going to watch Lost now. Knowing what I know, I won't be disappointed and can enjoy it for what it is. I just couldn't watch it as a skeptic when everyone was so excited about it. It wasn't living up to their expectations in my mind, so I couldn't stick with it.

I was reading buzzfeed articles about Season 1 for theories, not because I had no idea what was going on.

I never once had to read a buzzfeed article for GoT. They have just as much going on as this season of TD, they just relay it and explain it much much much much better, and make it much more interesting.

You must be a damn genius if you are able to follow GoT with one viewing, without reading the books or interacting with anybody or the internet. Something tells me you at least talk about the show with others and that makes it easier to follow.

Somebody spent a huge amount of time making these because GoT is hard to follow.

I'm sure there are summaries online of every major show. For good shows, they usually don't involve the terms "because no one knows what's going on" and "to explain this confusing plot line" like you see with several TD Season 2 articles.

In the True Detecfive article the author even thanked people for still reading about halfway through.

Not sure what the implication is.

Are you comparing apples to apples here? Do you mean GT as a whole or do you mean say the first 8 episodes of Season 1?

Season 2 of TD is a self-contained season, so everything that has happened has only been the 7 episodes we've seen.

That's a good point, but yeah GoT season 1 was pretty hard to keep up with all the characters. They threw so many at you from the get go and they have a lot of weird names.

The difference is that last season was entertaining and this season is not.

Last season we wanted to know more and find things we missed. We couldn't get enough. This season, people are reading to find out what happened after they fell asleep in hopes that the season will start to entertain.

Doesn't matter to me if the show has layers and/or is complex. This season has sucked.

This. Perhaps I expected this season to have a grandiose plot and star power. Thats my fault...maybe
