In an interview last year, David Cutcliffe said Heath Shuler was the most talented college quarterback he'd ever coached. Considering Peyton Manning passed through Rocky Top after Heath, that's a hell of a statement.

Although the stats lean toward Peyton, Heath Shuler was a great quarterback in his own right. That begs the question of who would you want to quarterback one college game for you, Heath Shuler or Peyton Manning?

are you serious... jk :)
Although i never saw Heath Shuler play in college (and hardly saw peyton) I would not be shocked if Heath was more talented. I mean in all honesty, Peyton is not the best athlete. If fact, Peyton is what he is because he has made himself that way. Now given, he is a pretty tallented guy, but probably not the most. I bet no one here could have ever imagined how great he would turn out in the NFL.
All of that aside, there is no doubt in my mind i would pick peyton EVERY time. regardless of his "talent."

You really missed something. Heath Shuler was the best QB in the nation back in the day, IMO. He could throw, run, throw on the run, etc.

Are you serious? He could have declared for the draft after his Junior year and been considered a can't miss, top 5 pick.

Tee Martin. That man could run like a gazelle, and get some serious air under a ball!

This is the kind of brilliance from Cutcliffe that makes me glad he is gone. His so called eye for talent is forever compromised.

Shuler probably had the most raw talent . . . but it was that reading the defense thing that caused him problems.

I remember watching the very first pre seaosn game in which Shuler played, and can remember clearly Dan Dierdorf talking about how Shuler really didnt have much arm strength. Brilliant.

On a happier note, I was at the Georgia game in Athens in '92. He really put the team on his shoulders at times that day. Good times...
You can still make Georgia fans cringe when you bring up Shuler running for 100 yards and converting 4th and 17 on the last drive.

I'm biased if anyone on this board is with a dog that come from him staring at me while im typing. I am all for Heath over Peyton besides i know him and dont know Peyton personally. Heath had it all. He had size, he did have an arm, he could get out of the pocket and move if he needed to and would get something bout everytime, and he was tough. He didnt mind lowering that head and laying into someone to get all he could. He gave his all for Tennessee. Now most people will put their pro careers into factor and i wont because well yeah Heaths didnt do well. Everyone and their brother has compared Crompton to Heath already. I hope he is real similar. Physically and grit and get it wise i believe he is. Mentally he may be able to grasp things better. I want the leader of my team to have that. Safety wise its smart to throw it away like Eric did so much but i think the team plays harder when your leader is gritting it with you.IMO. Peyton is brilliant and can do anything with the ball and im a big fan of his but hes as bad if not worse than Erik on ground speed. Id take Heath anyday.
