Heath Shuler vs. Peyton Manning

Peyton is brilliant and can do anything with the ball and im a big fan of his but hes as bad if not worse than Erik on ground speed. Id take Heath anyday.

I can honestly say that I can't remember a single play that Peyton Manning failed to make where when it was over I said, "If only he was faster".

I haven't seen him in several years but I knew Heath and his family as well so I won't claim to be exactly unbiased. That said... I'd still take Heath.

He was a real threat to run. QB arms at UT are still compared to Heath's. Stephens supposedly has the best arm since Shuler. A relative told us that he threw the ball the length of UT's indoor practice facility once and hit the opposite wall about 10 ft up. Without an arch, that's an incredible throw.

As far as I know, the O he led his JR year is the ONLY Vol offense to score over forty points per game. It is still a record though it was done in only 12 games including the bowl.

He started for only two years and is still around the top of most QB career statistics @ UT.

BTW, his NFL career paralleled Kerry Collins up to the point where he destroyed his heel trying to play while injured for the Saints. He had the physical skills but even at UT Heath had to work much harder at the mental part. Had he found the right situation he may well have had a decent ending to his career had the injury not cut it short. He should have come back for his SR year. He could have used the development.

Peyton is by far the better pro and even had Heath turned it around he'd have never reached Manning's level. However if I'm behind by a touchdown against Bama with the ball on their 5... Heath's the guy I want under center.

That's sort of the neat thing about averages. It doesn't really matter how many games you play . . . since it's an average. :p

Sorry, I meant the 484 points they scored that year still stands as a record.

I knew that was what you meant. But it's late on a Sunday night in mid-June and this was the only thing I could find to be a jerk about.:)

That's the key. I framed the question as who would you want to QB a college game. Heath was nails.

I loved watching Heath play back in the day. Dude had an absolute cannon, and he was athletic and fun to watch. No question he was more "talented" than Peyton.

With that said, Peyton was the better QB at any level. If I had one game to win, I'd want Peyton at the helm. He wasn't as talented as Shuler, but he more than made up for it (and still does) with preparation and film study.

You can still make Georgia fans cringe when you bring up Shuler running for 100 yards and converting 4th and 17 on the last drive.
That was such a fun game to attend. There were quite a few times when it seemed hopeless and then we would convert another 4th down play.

It is pretty amazing that one of my buddies and I didn't get jumped after that game. We were quite...um, jubilant.

he struggled with Florida, he won plenty of other big games.

Agreed, I want to say his bowl record was 3-1. The FL games did not always fall completely on his shoulders. There were years where he got little to no help from the defense.

Yea tough to beat a team when they score 62 points.

are you serious... jk :)
Although i never saw Heath Shuler play in college (and hardly saw peyton) I would not be shocked if Heath was more talented. I mean in all honesty, Peyton is not the best athlete. If fact, Peyton is what he is because he has made himself that way. Now given, he is a pretty tallented guy, but probably not the most. I bet no one here could have ever imagined how great he would turn out in the NFL.
All of that aside, there is no doubt in my mind i would pick peyton EVERY time. regardless of his "talent."

Quite possible the most uninformed statement of all time on this board...

Peyton excelled at a number of sports. He played shortstop on his high school baseball team.

Why do some people think if you can't run fast, you are not a good athlete......total fallacy

Shuler might be a better athlete....MIGHT

Another fallacy. One of the knocks against his was his arm strength. Couldn't throw the deep out in the NFL

Heath would have won two Heisman's in today's college football. He was Tim Tebow, but with a better arm........In COLLEGE FOOTBALL, I will take the better athlete everytime. And Heath could run two circles around PM.

Look at teams that have won the last 10 or so national titles. Seven of them (exceptions being Weinke, Leinart, and Dorsey) were at least threats to run in short yardage and convert third downs. And I would venture to say that I could have QB'd those three teams to titles. Those guys had the Warrick's, Bush's, Johnson's, and Shockey's of the world that ALWAYS got open.

Flynn was that type of guy.
Tebow and even Chrissy would run on occasion.
Krenzel was a decent runner.
Matt Mauck was..........I just threw up again.
Our own Tamurice Martin could tote the mail.

Give me the dual threat in college....

Not exactly unbiased???? Sorry pard, but you are totally biased.

Paralled Kerry Collins????? Yeah, you're too close to the family. You're letting your feelings get in the way of the facts.

Sorry, but Heath was NEVER going to be an effective QB in the NFL, regardless of whether or not he had a heel injury.

Him leaving for the NFL before his senior season wasn't the best move either.

Somewhere I have a Heath Shuler Redskins rookie card and the blurb on the back says he's a "can't miss pro-prospect" :eek:hmy:
