The Heisman trophy is an interesting phenomenon. It’s no different than a Ma and Pa Kettle trophy for best player, other than it somehow got legs since 1935 as the premier coleege football award. The Downtown Athletic Club of NYC that created it, even went out of business in 2002. The trophy lived on by creation of the Heisman Trust, for the sole purpose of dishing out the trophy.
My biggest issue with the trophy is the voters essentially have no mind of their own. At the end of the year some player has a big performance in a big game and the media then puts out that this person is the front runner for the trophy and should win it. So all those voters then just go and vote for that person. It’ll happen again this year with Caleb Williams. Not really any press about him until USC beat ND last week. Now he’s the best player in the country. Press making a big deal about only 3 pics. Hooker had 2. That said, Williams is good so he’s as deserving as anyone else.
