Here Comes the Recession

Buffoons don't become president. Trump has what I'd call an extremely high social intelligence. Any good politician does.

"Intelligence" does not necessarily mean an intellectual intelligence or curiosity. Trump certainly does not have that. However, aside from perhaps Obama, which Presidents have been intellectuals?
I think Obama fancies himself as an intellectual. Maybe a teleprompter intellectual at best.

He's certainly the most intellectual person among more recent presidents. I wouldn't know how he stacks up against fellow intellectuals...if he'd be a heavy hitter or not. He did teach constitutional law at an elite law school for 12 years while being a "community organizer."

My point is that it's actually atypical for a President (or any executive for that matter) to be an intellectual heavyweight. They are intelligent, but just not in that way.

I think it’s certainly possible for a buffoon to become president. It takes two things, a lot of money and the opposition running somebody that is worse.

It’s just my opinion, but I really think those on the right just tell themselves he is a master manipulator and see what they want to see, because the majority of what he says really is that stupid and just plain wrong and it’s unfathomable he is really serious.

I think the left is just as stupid too, FWIW. I think Trump is the social correction to the safe space, SJW, over-the-top P.C. culture that ran rampant under Obama. Building websites to Tweets and what not is stupid. Just run somebody who is a decent human being, can speak in complete sentences, and addresses real problems with real solutions. It should be a runaway victory. It’s a sad state of affairs when our two main party choices are Trump and Biden.

I have literally never voted for a R or D, so I say this as objectively as I can.

I believe Clinton, whatever you think of him personally, was a Rhodes Scholar.

No he isn’t. Carter was hands down a brilliant man I’d say. And and absolutely horrible President.

Brilliant man does not necessarily equal intellectual. There are different types of intelligence...being an intellectual/having a lot of knowledge about things is just one form of it.

Intellectual refers to the academic and the theoretical. Of the recent Presidents, only Obama has that in his professional background (he was a law professor at the University of Chicago for over 10 years). Jimmy Carter was far more down to earth than that - he was in the Navy, then became a peanut farmer, then got into politics. Carter was brilliant and not an intellectual...and I mean that as a compliment. Calling someone an intellectual is not always a compliment.

As @rjd970 mentioned Clinton was a Rhodes Scholar and briefly was a college professor before getting into politics...I consider Clinton to be more of a career politician than an intellectual. Obama had an academic career that spanned over a decade before he got into politics.

Agreed. I really don't think he was all that smart.
He was "smart" in that he was well-read and knows a lot of facts about various subjects. Book smart, basically. I mean that as an insult, not a compliment. Just look at what he did for a living professionally before he got into politics - he was an academic for over a decade.

I think he was a pretty poor executive and manager. It takes a different type of intelligence and judgment to be good at those, but not book smarts.

I’m sure he appreciates you playing along 👍

I can’t stand the continual tweets. But they clearly help him get what he wants.

As I’m sure he also appreciates you playing along. 👌

I don’t know what you mean by it “clearly gets him what he wants”, but a victory by mistake, while a victory, wasn’t accomplished by a master stroke of genius as some on here seem to believe Trump is.

You may see it different, but I see Trump as nothing more than the eventual outcome of the overdriven SJW culture and a lying hypocrite as his opposition. Against any candidate better than Hillary and he isn’t President.

I’m playing along? Lol ok. I wouldn’t know what he tweets if I didn’t read the daily screeching on it from the left. Which is exactly what he wants.

Rationalize his winning anyway you want. But he beat about 15+ traditional GOP candidates to get the nomination and beat the most qualified candidate ever. And his tweet storms are a big part of his messaging and clearly have served him well.

I can’t stand the tweet storms and don’t see them unless I read a “did you see what Trump tweeted now?!” mostly here or from my triggered leftist FB buddies. And I didn’t vote for him last time either I voted libertarian. But... I will vote for him next time!

If you are being an apologetic on here dressing the circus up as a master manipulation, then yes, you are playing along.

And like I said before, without Hillary’s lying and emails and SJWs run rampant and Trumps millions, he isn’t president. It had nothing to do with his message or Twitter. The Christian Right voted for a pornstar banging reality star. In no other universe does that happen without the storm of events I just outlined. You can rationalize that anyway you want, but that is the reality.

Low oil prices = good for the majority of American consumers.

Not anymore, per Trump.

Free markets = GOP mantra forever.

Not anymore, per Trump.

The real RINO is Donald Trump. If you can't see that, you've already been caught and gutted.

And, of course, what's really going on is Donald is simply pandering to Texas and his big oil buddies. If you ever had any doubt what's most important to Donald, it's being reelected. Can't WAIT to see him get the boot. If you're a real Republican, you will agree.

Trump's incredible 180 on OPEC, oil and free markets

I’m not apologizing for anything no idea where you’re inventing that from.

And the horrible nature of Killary as a candidate sure is counter to the messaging in 2016. “Most qualified candidate ever” was the mantra. Here’s a popular T shirt from the time I’m sure you’ve seen a copy of two before? No?

Plus... what would I have to apologize for. Or Trump supporters for that matter. He took on all comers in both parties and won.

There is opportunity in chaos. Some will make a killing while others roll over and accept whatever fate the media and politicians tell them to expect.

If we should be disappointed that his policies are leaning more left, does this mean you and other lefties are more approving?

My apologies for thinking you were being an apologetic then. You REALLY do believe the circus is intentional. SMH.

If you remember Hillary did win the popular vote, but from an electoral perspective she was the worst (or best if you are a Trump fan). My position is Trump being president isn’t a statement about him so much as it is a statement about his opponents and the culture he ran against.

And just so we are clear, Trumps trolling of the SJW culture is fine by me, those people are loony. But that doesn’t make him a good president or stand to be a good reason to vote for him.

Oh FFS. Look you’re buying into the buffoon schtick just like the Dems and every other GOP candidate did.

I get it. You don’t like him and think he’s rather unqualified. I think he’s rather a lousy human being myself.

However the data clearly points to him being better than every other GOP candidate and the DNC choice as he beat them in an open contest. And to date the DNC has offered up a communist and a career DC politician to beat him in 2020. So this is the magic recipe to win this time?! LMFAO!

He doesn’t have to be the best candidate ever. He just has to be the best one running. 2016 results said he was. And thus far 2020 is shaping up to be more of the same.

Rationalize that away anyhow you need to.

I’m not buying into the buffoon schtick, ND40, he is actually a buffoon.

You want rationalization?

The majority of the electorate thought he was less qualified than Hillary. More people voted for Clinton. Period. According to Gallup, he has never had an approval rating more than 49%.

Presidential Approval Ratings -- Donald Trump

So the majority of Americans have never thought he was doing a good job either.

I’ve always said, if he is the best candidate, then that says more about us than it does about Trump. If you don’t agree, and think Trump won because he is some master Twitter strategist and he is playing the Dems, then OK. I personally don’t see anything to support that claim other than blind hope he isn’t as dumb as he sounds or blatant refusal to take him at his word.

You’re right. I don’t like Trump. I don’t like Biden. And I never liked Hillary or Obama either. My dislike of Trump isn’t partisan, it’s based on his words and actions without blindly assuming it is really all a part of some master scheme.

We’ve seemed to relegate ourselves that a President trolling his opposition should be lauded. It’s sad. Really sad.

The bolded is categorically false. The electorate here is the same electorate as has always applied in every other POTUS election. The “popular vote” is now and will always be meaningless. If you don’t like it work to get the constitution changed.

He clearly gets under your skin. That’s on you. Looks like a tough 5 years ahead for ya!
