He is a damn good coach. Wish we could snag him up here...but from the sounds of it, he want a HC position.

Boo-hoo

How many times has the best person for the job NOT been hired due to "diversity"?

On a related note:

Time to give Chizik some credit: I can’t think if a coaching hire that has been more widely second-guessed than Auburn’s decision to hire Gene Chizik. And yes, race was injected into the issue when Charles Barkley said what he said. But now it’s time to start giving the new head coach at Auburn some credit. He has made a couple of very inspired hires by bringing in Guz Malzahn as offensive coordinator and Trooper Taylor as assistant head coach. Taylor, who was one of Tennessee’s best recruiters before he went to Oklahoma State last season, is a great get for Auburn. He was a big reason why the Oklahoma State offense lit up the scoreboard this season.

My friend Kevin Scarbinsky of the Birmingham News pointed this out this morning but it bears repeating. Chizik has hired five assistant coaches thus far and four have been African-American. If you’re going to criticize Auburn for passing on Turner Gill as a head coach, you have to credit the school for having a diverse staff. Here is Kevin’s column.

I find it amazing that Charlie Strong has never been a head coach in the 25+ years he's been coaching. He's a damn good coach.

edit: that made sense

I agree 100%, what I dont agree with is that a major university would pass over a head coach that they believed in just because of his skin color. The logic that a university would hire unqualifed coach "A" over qualified coach "B" cause he is black

I think there are only 6 or 7 black HC's in D-1 football. Based on those low numbers, you would think racism is absolutely a factor.

I think interracial marriage is one of those last racial taboos that won't be easily overcome because it is a view held by both racial groups (generally speaking).

exactly. to think that there aren't some auburn alumns who wouldn't balk at a black head coach, but would balk at one with a white wife is just silly.

I don't see why people can't get past it. Personally, I don't give a s*** if a black man has a white wife, or a white man has a black wife.

I've never seen why it should matter.

He will get a shot but from what I hear he is wanting the best job to start and not a job that might not be the top teir...You have to start somewhere and if HC is what you want then you need to put your name out there everywhere and not just at a top teir program...He is a hell of a coach and would love to have him here but we have Kiff now

I saw this article too. It makes me sad to think that he would be passed over because his wife is white. However, has he applied to any jobs up North or out West if he feels he will not get a fair shot at Southern schools?

there are many examples of top assistants that have gone to top tier programs without head coach experience and particurally gone to bcs schools. stoops is one. i can't think of an example who is black.

:whatever:

I think he was a good recruiter, but c'mon... the guy was at OSU for a year...

And PS, but OSU has, relatively speaking, been lighting up the scoreboard for the past couple of seasons. Have you looked at their schedule for the past 2 years?

2 things.

1. I agree with Strong completely. I would say this has been his and others experience.

2. Chizik better hire black coaches. If he doesn't Auburn looks that much worse. I wonder if his hiring of black coaches has anything to do with the possible backlash from Charles Barkley and media if he doesn't...better believe it does. thats not to say that his hires arent great hires, but i would say the pressure is on especially now after the Turner Gill comments.

Seriously, If Strong were that good He would already have a head coaching job...Remember the bowl game he coached?..Looked like a deer in the headlights...Can't base it all on one game but come on, if he is only trying to get a HCing job in the south and feel race is a problem then why not send your resume out west and see who's interested...I'm sure he will one day be a decent HC but don't build him up like he's some kind of great catch because if he was he would already be caught...He might be smart to just hang out at UF until Urban leaves for Notre Dame and maybe he'll slide into a top notch job already familiar with the expections and surroundings.

Well, some of us don't care if our coaches and their wives are orange, green, blue, yellow, red, black, or white as long as we win. We can't say that for everyone, and the fact that the only jobs many black coaches are getting are outcast graveyard schools I think it's pretty clear where the hiring preference lies. Sylvester Croom falls into the graveyard category because even though he took over an SEC team they were under sanctions, and I mean...it's Miss State.
