i am seeing a lot of argument on this board and some of the displeasure seems to be not that tennessee will end up around 6-6 like most everyone thought, but how tennessee will arrive at 6-6. style points, if you will.

well, here's the deal for the season.

offense.

a spread offense....i don't care if it's a passing spread or a spread option....is more dependent on qb play than any other style offense. tennessee doesn't have a qb right now. i don't know if one is on the roster and needs time to mature. but, for the year 2013, tennessee does not have a qb.

tennessee does not have a dynamic running back and tennessee's offensive line has not grown up in this system.

butch has two choices. play to the current team's strengths (which is not this offense) and hinder the growth of future teams or begin running his system his way and getting people to learn it so that they will be better at it in 2014 and beyond. he has chosen, wisely i might add, that there is no time like the present and that they need to learn what they are supposed to be doing and how to play his style of football now rather than later. this was the main reason i thought 2014 would be better than 2013 in the first place.

due to all of that, you are going to have what you have right now. it's not going to change. it will be like this all year. don't be discouraged and don't be surprised. but, the only way to be more productive this season would be to abandon his offensive philosophy and that's not going to happen.

defense

there is a flat out talent problem, whether some of you want to acknowledge it or not.

the defensive end position....i would be banned if i gave an accurate description.

the speed at linebacker and in the secondary is lacking....particularly linebacker.

now, there are things that are not good fundamentally that you can coach. tackling, for instance. however, a lot of these guys now have played for multiple coordinators and multiple position coaches. i'm going to assume they have worked on tackling over the years. so, if guys still can't tackle, still can't take good angles, and are still out of position, that's on the players. they have been coached to do those things.

so, if all of this bothers you, don't watch the rest of this season starting this week because georgia is going to score as many as they choose to.

south carolina and alabama won't be much prettier.

it's a defense with talent problems. it's an offense with no qb playing in a system they are not suited for. because of that, there aren't going to be the hard fought, played them down to the wire, respectable losses that some of you are looking for to show progress.

the scary thing is i think the offense can make a significant leap next year if one of the freshman qb's are ready. however, i don't know how long it's going to take to fix that defense.

Speed, speed, speed and we have none! When Coach was Hired he proclaimed we would run a power spread. Instead we get this highschool read option crap. Your 100% spot on about your post. We are in for a long ruff season. We need Brewer speed atleast in the middle . We need DE's with AJ's fire on the ends. we are in serious trouble here..and it doesn't look good. If we can't have freshman on campus ready to play next season we will strugle to win 4-5 games

I think this is a fair and accurate assessment of our current situation. The only thing I might disagree with is CBJ running his offense regardless of the talent in it. A perfect example is John Fox. He made the playoffs by playing to Tebow's strengths. It was ugly but he did it. Then, he gets Peyton, adapts his philosophy again, and they look like world beaters. Great coaches coach what they have. Its a square peg, round hole kind of deal at TN right now.

Here's the real deal. We are still trying to master fundamental football. High School fundamentals in fact. I love all the talk of Spread Option and yadda, yadda, yadda when we are having trouble with routes, pursuit angles, tackling, blocking, timing....you name it. Butch may get it......but the fanbase DEFINITELY does not.

well genius you better pray we don't schedual UCF at florida! Did you watch that game? If you did you would see South Carolina change the game after the 2nd quarter and play smash Mouth football! They are some teams that will switch to what works!

They adjusted didn't they? I watched that too. It's what good coaches do. No QB , no problem. Line up and smash them. They beat them up physically after that.

You guys need to worry about your own soon-to-be 6-6 season.

99,

Good job. The only thing I have an issue with is that it all starts upfront with the O-line. If they're having issues with Butch's system, and none of them will be here next year, then isn't Butch basically starting all over next season?

If that's the case, play to your team's strengths. I hate to go back to Urban Meyer, but didn't he win a title with a "hybrid" version of his O? Leak wasn't a spread QB. So he played to Leak's strengths while incorporating Tebow in certain situations.

1. he did tweak things a little.

2. chris leak was fairly good at what he could do.

3. the florida offense in 2005 and 2006 was not good.

4. we had a defense

it's not like starting over all over again, because every offensive scholarship player will have a year's experience in this system...at least in practice.

Mr. 99gator - I sometimes disagree with your posts, but this is not one of those times. I couldn't have summarized it any better. I complement your ability to analytically assess and summarize the problems with our team. You nailed it last year in your observations of the UF / UT game, and you have eloquently nailed again with your post here.

And it worked out ok in 2006.

2. chris leak was fairly good at what he could do.

Agree. But Meyer played to his strengths.

3. the florida offense in 2005 and 2006 was not good.

See #2

4. we had a defense

That certainly helps!

Hell, Worley and Peterman look good in practice. :loco:

You can't play smash mouth with 10 guys within 5 yards of the ball. If USA did not respect our ability to burn them with the pass then imagine what the Bama game will look like. Ole Miss got 200 yds on Bama, we are looking at 150.

You hit the nail on the head Gator99. Too bad there are so many Vols fans on here who like to put down the coaches, and know so little about football. Great post.
