here's the deal folks

i am seeing a lot of argument on this board and some of the displeasure seems to be not that tennessee will end up around 6-6 like most everyone thought, but how tennessee will arrive at 6-6. style points, if you will.

well, here's the deal for the season.

offense.

a spread offense....i don't care if it's a passing spread or a spread option....is more dependent on qb play than any other style offense. tennessee doesn't have a qb right now. i don't know if one is on the roster and needs time to mature. but, for the year 2013, tennessee does not have a qb.

tennessee does not have a dynamic running back and tennessee's offensive line has not grown up in this system.

butch has two choices. play to the current team's strengths (which is not this offense) and hinder the growth of future teams or begin running his system his way and getting people to learn it so that they will be better at it in 2014 and beyond. he has chosen, wisely i might add, that there is no time like the present and that they need to learn what they are supposed to be doing and how to play his style of football now rather than later. this was the main reason i thought 2014 would be better than 2013 in the first place.

do to all of that, you are going to have what you have right now. it's not going to change. it will be like this all year. don't be discouraged and don't be surprised. but, the only way to be more productive this season would be to abandon his offensive philosophy and that's not going to happen.

defense

there is a flat out talent problem, whether some of you want to acknowledge it or not.

the defensive end position....i would be banned if i gave an accurate description.

the speed at linebacker and in the secondary is lacking....particularly linebacker.

now, there are things that are not good fundamentally that you can coach. tackling, for instance. however, a lot of these guys now have played for multiple coordinators and multiple position coaches. i'm going to assume they have worked on tackling over the years. so, if guys still can't tackle, still can't take good angles, and are still out of position, that's on the players. they have been coached to do those things.

so, if all of this bothers you, don't watch the rest of this season starting this week because georgia is going to score as many as they choose to.

south carolina and alabama won't be much prettier.

it's a defense with talent problems. it's an offense with no qb playing in a system they are not suited for. because of that, there aren't going to be the hard fought, played them down to the wire, respectable losses that some of you are looking for to show progress.

the scary thing is i think the offense can make a significant leap next year if one of the freshman qb's are ready. however, i don't know how long it's going to take to fix that defense.

Thank you at least some ones fan base gets it.

It's a shame when a Gator makes more sense than most of the UT fans here.

Urban Meyer did win a NC with Leak, who wasn't a spread option QB, but Meyer also had a lot of talent on that team. Ron Zook couldn't coach, but the man could recruit as good as anyone. If UT had the defense that Florida did that season, we wouldn't be worrying about Justin Worley. But our defense is terrible. Worley and the offense put up 31 points and we barely beat a Sun Belt team.

Butch has a track record of winning at two different schools, and he's recruiting the kind of talent he needs to win in the SEC. Yesterday looked bad, and there are going to be bad days as long as the coaching staff is using players who weren't recruited for the new system. They won anyway, and that's a good thing.

Speed, speed, speed and we have none! When Coach was Hired he proclaimed we would run a power spread. Instead we get this highschool read option crap. Your 100% spot on about your post. We are in for a long ruff season. We need Brewer speed atleast in the middle . We need DE's with AJ's fire on the ends. we are in serious trouble here..and it doesn't look good. If we can't have freshman on campus ready to play next season we will strugle to win 4-5 games

Brewer speed? Are you serious???? Speed is NOT his strength. Hitting is his strength.

I don't disagree with everything. I think the secondary's main problem is they are young. I actually think they are the strength of the D right now.

LB's and DE's take bad angles and allow the QB to make runs and get out of the pocket.

On offense I don't see the RB's being that bad. I just see the QB and WR's not being that good. The past 2 games are a great example.

1- QB. When the play breaks down, I wish we had a QB that could escape the pocket and run for a first down. Worley has been throwing off his back foot and forcing throws.

2 - WR's. last week, the Fla WR, took a pass and ran up the sidelines for a big play. I have not seen a WR from us take a pass, make someone miss a tackle and turn it into a 60-70 yard play. I want to see that, but we don't have that right now.

I don't the the Oline has been that bad, we just don't have a QB that makes quick enough decisions. Our RB's are great, but serviceable. The DE position has been pretty bad and the LB's on the boundaries are a big problem.

I was following you until you got to the defensive assessment. Your final assessment of "talent" is not as bad as you conclude. We have injuries shading talent level.

The DE play has been weak, but we played the first few games with both DEs out with injury. Both are back but playing with healing injuries (one in a cast). So, our talent at DE is not as bad as your final assessment. It will improve as healing improves.

Slow LBs is a weak spot, and especially shows when covering a TE or RB. Yet, we have more speed talent that is not playing due to injuries. Again, as healing occurs speed will improve.

Im not convinced UT doesn't have a top notch spread tailback in Lane.

He's shifter and more dangerous in space than Neal, in my limited opinion.

Just gonna post this for a little reference.

Butch Jones at Cincy:
2010: 4-8
2011: 10-3
2012: 10-3

We're gonna be fine. Maybe not this year, but we're gonna be fine.

I agree with you. I think we will actually be better next year than this year. Plus, next years schedule is not as bad and we will have more talent / experience on the team.

I think to sum this all up; we are in the MIDDLE of the worst period in UT football history. Took years to get here and it will take years to get back out and be relevant again. The question is; "Is Butch the man for the rebuilding job"?

I think he is but the fans here seem to expect overnight miracles. To predict anything better than a 5-7 record this year is pure fantasy. Probably the same next year. It will be as Butch says, brick by brick.

Great thread OP. I believe we should sacrifice this season for the future. Implementing the system is the way we need to go. I'm not saying give up on the season by any means.

When a game is happening I get mad and become a critic and thats because I'm a true vol fan and hate to see my vols suck lol.

You're joking right?

No, unfortunately I'm not. I watched a replay of their game last night-that's a legit top 25 team in my opinion. They blew clock management at like the 5 yard line yesterday, or otherwise they would have been up 17-0 at the half. Their are legit.

ITT:

99 posts some sound analysis and all UT fans do is call other UT fans stupid.

Limited discussion of what 99 actually said.

Except by Lawrence.
