coming from a Bruce Pearl supporter.

I love how some "fans" try to divide a fanbase with comments like this. Don't worry, you and your 4 followers will convince a few more if you keep throwing what you write out there. Occasionally it will stick.

By the way, I'm a Tennessee basketball supporter.

Hat is a "blue collar" guy when it comes to basketball coaches.

You know what's interesting is that my preferred style of coaching is the old school "blue collar" type of coaching as well.

However, this person who so passionately hates Pearl and spends his days on here ripping him for his lack of class needs to take a look in the mirror. Anonymity and the internet bring out the worst in some people.

Everyone here knows where I sit and what I do for a living. Anyone with an IQ above 50 knows who I am or could find out in about 5 minutes. That's real anonymous.

Uh huh because no one makes things up on the internet.

This is a strange place.

You have been here about 15 minutes, Hat has been here for several years. He has been at multiple gatherings and many have met him personally along the way. Who would have expected you to bother to know any of that though, apparently this strange place didn't actually exist until you showed up and began sharing your opinions.

Yeah, because I make them up, then meet a large number of posters on here, including the owner, all the while "staying in character." Hell, I should go into acting if I'm that damn good. Face it. Those of you who cry on here about how poorly Saint Bruce is treated love to say how it's just anonymous shots. When you lose that card, you accuse me of lying. Typical for the kind of human flotsam Pearl attracts.

Just don't take any candy from strangers and you should be fine.

Again, I understand how you guys feel about Coach Pearl and don't have any delusions of grandeur that I'm going to bring you around.

With that said, I've gotten caught up in the smack talk which I'm not a fan of at all and for that I apologize. I'm more than happy to take this back to a civil discussion for this and for future topics. However, I think the horse is dead on this one.

There are multiple people on this board who know who I am.

As far as the pay... You see no problem in paying a coach Elite level money to get mediocre results? If so I would love to have your business.

Curiously, what would be your watermark to get above mediocre results?

I'm real, real big on getting results on par with what you pay.

We are paying Elite 8 money and beyond, so therefore I expect to get to that point.

I think both sides of the CBP argument exaggerate a bit. He's not an elite coach or a bad coach - probably somewhere in between based on results. He's a great marketer and has brought $'s into the program using that skill. I have historically been very pro Bruce Pearl, but it's hard to justify what we are paying against the results in the last two years (on and off the court). I am still hopeful that additional elite players (perhaps the prospects coming in 2010-2011) will change some of these results.

I never said he was a saint. This was a discussion about his pay for the most part and I gave my thoughts. For some reason it has gotten dragged down into this though. I'm not a blind follower of Bruce Pearl and know he has faults but I also am fully aware of what he's done for the Univ of Tennessee.

Your style whether you do it because that is who you are or that is your schtick rubs many people the wrong way and you know that and are obviously fine with it. However, because of the way you express your opinions you have to expect to get the responses you do and not be surprised when you get them.

I'll be more than glad to stick around here and talk basketball but hopefully it doesn't always end up like this thread has gone.

I don't think the pay is as important - at this school with our resources, we should be able to field a consistently good basketball program that occasionally reaches elite levels. We still haven't done that and the jury is still out on whether CBP can do it.

Resources or not, Pearl makes way too much for what he has done.

However, as much as I dislike Pearl, even I can admit that that blames falls squarely on the shoulders of Hammy.

CBP is a state employee, albeit a highly paid one, thus I don't think it is wrong or misguided to question his results anymore than it would be to question the results of any other employee compensated by the State like the governor, a state senator, etc.

However, with that being said, I think labeling CBP's accomplishments at UT as "mediocre" is a drastic misstatement. Mediocre was what the program was under Buzz Peterson and Kevin O'Neill. I don't like all of CBP's tactics either, but he made UT's basketball program relevant again and put it back in the national discussion. We were an absolute joke and completely irrelevant prior to his arrival. Look at it this way - is the program better off now than 5 years ago? Even with the arrests I think it would be hard for anyone to honestly say we're worse off. UT fans are actually complaining about us "only" being in the Top 20. Wow! Really? Some fans have short memories.

Results should be measured in two ways. Wins and loses obviously being the first, but one must also consider the AD financial impact as well.

In most cases there is a strong correlation between these two.

Pearl was hired to put butts in the seats. He was told to revive the program. We have a big basketball facility and it's big money when it fills up. We'd had decent winning percentages in the past, but the curtain still hung in the upper deck.

He's been a marketing machine and his pay is based on the financial impact he's had on the AD bottom line. During his tenure attendance has gone up about 7,000 butts per home game. Those people are not sitting there because of Dane Bradshaw, Chris Lofton, and Tyler Smith. We've had far better players in recent years.

A coaches salary doesn't work with this way. Besides my Kirk Ferentz example, let me give you another. The Iowa basketball program has sunk to the bowels of hell, there is no interest, we will win less than 10 games this year and the arena is less than half full. Our coach makes ~ $1.4 million year. There was a time in our history where we always had 20 wins, made the NCAA tourney every year and sold out every home game.

I have no doubt in my mind the AD would pay $2 million/year (and the fanbase would be supportive) for a coach if he could fill the arena and get back to the tourney every year again.

It's all relative to your situation. Pearl had success early on, got the pay raise because of it and now some of the fanbase is using it against him wanting more. It's the nature of the beast I suppose.

A coach's quality is best exhibited in times of adversity. It's easy to look smart when everything is going your way. Charlotte isn't anything special. If you can't rally the remaining roster and beat them, you shouldn't be making more than Jim Calhoun.

I'll agree with this. I know this is a basketball board, but do you think Kiffin earned his money this season?
