I'll agree with this. I know this is a basketball board, but do you think Kiffin earned his money this season?
He's being paid a middle of the pack SEC salary and UT finished in the middle of the SEC pack. Sounds about right.

It's all relative to your situation. Pearl had success early on, got the pay raise because of it and now some of the fanbase is using it against him wanting more. It's the nature of the beast I suppose.

It's not about "using his salary against him wanting more"; it's about getting what you pay for. How long does Pearl get a pass just because he's better than Buzz Petersen? Is he entitled to a lifetime job at one of the sport's top salaries just because he's better than Wade Houston? If not, at what point does he have to be judged on his own merits and in the context of Tennessee's new financial commitment to men's basketball?

I'm not advocating we fire the guy. But five years in is long enough that it's time for people to quit shrieking BUZZ PETERSON BUZZ PETERSON BUZZ PETERSON WADE HOUSTON every time people starting talking about what kind of job he's doing. You can't just rest on "well, at least we're better than we used to be!" forever.

Results should be measured in two ways. Wins and loses obviously being the first, but one must also consider the AD financial impact as well.

In most cases there is a strong correlation between these two.

Pearl was hired to put butts in the seats. He was told to revive the program. We have a big basketball facility and it's big money when it fills up. We'd had decent winning percentages in the past, but the curtain still hung in the upper deck.

He's been a marketing machine and his pay is based on the financial impact he's had on the AD bottom line. During his tenure attendance has gone up about 7,000 butts per home game. Those people are not sitting there because of Dane Bradshaw, Chris Lofton, and Tyler Smith. We've had far better players in recent years.

Pearl's salary was just fine for the job he was doing.

This last raise put him in a bracket that he does not belong.

The butts in the seats were going nowhere, and neither was Pearl.
