Heupel's Monday Presser

I live in Georgia and proudly wear my Tennessee hat everyday, I live in a neighborhood full of Georgia fans and not one of them said a word about the game to me when I was out talking to them yesterday. That’s what I mean when I say we are not who we think we are, no one was suprised or made any comment. We had one good year in 20 years and we are all the sudden supposed to be contenders every year. We are expected to lose any big game by most fan bases outside of our own delusion.

Nobody shoot the messenger here…but the way we own Kentucky is the way we are owned by Florida. They likely view us the exact same way.

I don’t think we’re ever going to get to the bottom of exactly why certain players didn’t play. Heupel doesn’t owe us explanations. He owes us his best effort and I believe we are getting it. Things don’t make sense, but I think we would be best served by trusting that he’s doing his best for UT. The man didn’t forget magically forget what he was doing
somebody along the way did,,

God you guys are depressing, It's almost like you are going back to that put a gun to his head and if he doesn't win this or that then fire his ass and get another crappy coach, This fanbase has almost been the death of UT football...We FINALLY have a coach who cares about this program and its traditions and honestly is the best thing to happen to us in a long long time and it really bugs me that some of you are already on the brink of calling for his head...Teams are gonna lose games, It happens and nobody likes it and sometimes coaches have to make changes, It happens...For the love of god please leave this one alone and let him fix things his way
Nobody should be calling for his head, but you can't really blame people for being apoplectic right now.
The fanbase has been repeatedly kicked between the legs for the better part of two decades, and most of us thought we'd turned the corner last year. Then we go out and lose to an awful team. Good teams that are well coached shouldn't lose to awful teams. It's really that simple.
On top of that, he's up there giving cutie pie answers about why people didn't play, and players are making comments to the media about how we're undisciplined and lack confidence. Something stinks.

Yeah-it’s those darn fans that have filled the stadium year after year when all they got in return was two decent years since 2007. Get real and don’t ever say this fan base sucks. He’s being paid money that only top executives for companies earning over $1B in revenue will see in non-entertainment jobs. He’s a big boy getting big bucks who played football and coached at the biggest stages so if it really comes down to fans upsetting him, then tough doo doo. I don’t think he is affected by fans but the fans didn’t forget to recruit oline/lb/db. The coach did.

Or I will question whether Josh is the right coach to get a natty.
UT is a school that in the last 15 years has played in the same league as Vandy and UK. I can’t include UF, Mizzou or SC in that comparison because they’ve at least won the division at least once during that period. We’ve got great tradition (mostly pre 1960) and the best fanbase in the country and that keeps us with the same facilities and attendance as Bam/UGA/LSU and makes us seem more relevant than we are. Heupel isn’t getting us a trophy unless a lot of dumb luck is involved because he doesn’t know how to build the rosters and coaching staffs necessary to do so. You saw that tonight and will continue to see it unless he hits the portal hard for oline/LB/DB and gets coaches that can develop and recruit those positions. He’s a great innovator and play caller but that alone isn’t winning trophies. If it was, Lane and Gundy would have natties. Just be happy if we get 10 win seasons and major bowl wins because last year is the best you get unless our coach grows. I’ll be quiet and let the coach worshippers tell me how it’s my fault that we lose games like last Saturday.

Not an excuse anymore. It’s basically legal in most states or cops look the other way now.
Except they didn’t look the other way and it’s not legal everywhere. He knew why he did. No excuse to do something illegal. Stop making excuses for ignorant behavior.

Most transfers want to go where they can play....Deon at Colorado has around 60 percent of his team as transfers. Recruiting high school players is just a part of the process now.
HS recruiting is still the most important part of a football team.

Lol. This fan base does suck sometimes. It turns on coaches and players in a heartbeat. You people who have not blame coaches are ignorant. If you think what’s going on is all Heupels fault then you have been asleep the last 3 years.

Whose job is it to recruit and manage the roster? The fans? I recognize he’s digging UT out of a huge hole, but he’s also got tremendous resources to fix gaps via NIL and the portal that weren’t available until the last couple of years. FSU/Colorado/and others have shown you can use these tools to build up a team quicker than what was previously possible. But keep bashing the fans that show up yearly and support the team.

He did beat Bama. I trust him. Not worried.
So did Brian Kelly in year one. Sark would be 2-0 if the refs didn’t screw them over. Bama almost also lost to Ole Miss and ATM last year. They also struggled to beat South Florida this year. While it was a huge win for this program and possibly the best non-championship UT game I’ve seen, beating Bama isn’t the same win it was the last decade. I think he’s the right guy but he’s also about to be 1-2 vs Beamer and is 1-1 vs Napier. He’s got a lot of development to do and probably needs to move on from Martinez, Ekeler and maybe Banks.

Changes need to be made to the staff.

He can make them at the end of this season, or the next HC will in 3-4 years. His choice.

Go Vols.

Or the next coach will after next year. This is the new era we live in ; due to the Portal, Win and WIN NOW. No excuses, players are available, can you coach them?

Ah Ha! An actual enlightened UT Fan! BRAVO!. So true, with the Portal, a coach can fix a team in ONE YEAR. And Maintain it.

You could argue he should’ve put off a couple of suspensions. You could also fairly criticize the play calling.

Not having a plan for audibles with the noise, and not having the discipline to keep onside on an obvious trap… those things are inexcusable and the kind of things that get you fired.

I never expected we’d be as good as last year, but losing to Florida sucks and I’m tired of it.

So you think just every guy in the portal is a bike run guy that can just instantly make you better? That’s BS. Are you insinuating Heupels seat is even remotely warm?

There seems to be team culture issues. He probably should have cleaned more of the Pruitt era players out in addition to addressing line concerns.

You seem to want to address anything except the post you quoted to start this conversation.

It was said that CJH looked defeated. He didn’t. He looks pissed off. The guy is a competitor. Extremely competitive in almost every aspect of his life. One bad loss doesn’t make a guy like that want to quit. It makes them want to prove you wrong.

Did you see his Monday presser? He’s answering questions before they’re finished and being snippy about it. He’s pissed and can’t wait to get after it.
I never said he was defeated. Look at my original post. I said he had some hard decisions to make. I stand by that.

I also said that he was a good coach, and that he had a chance to be a great coach.

My entire point here is that UT caught lightning in a bottle last year, and there are serious issues on the coaching staff. Those will have to be addressed before this team, or its head coach, can reach their potential. That was my point.

I stand by that as well.

Go Vols.

Let’s try this again.

Here’s what we’re talking about.

And here’s your response too it.

Now I’m not sure what glasses I have on but I do know nothing beyond that is relevant to the post you quoted, or is something I’ve argued for you to argue against. So there’s my confusion as you seem to think I disagree with your assessment.

So unless you think CJH is a quitter and or looks defeated then we have nothing to discuss

He just went 11-2 and won the Orange bowl, Beat most of our biggest rivals which no other coach has done since Fulmer and almost had us in the playoffs yet he loses a game and here you are whining about it....Not sure what you expect but guys like Nick Saban only come around once in a lifetime...We are so lucky to have CJH and be damned if this school has to go through another coaching search and end up with another Dooley or even worse another Pruitt.

If people don’t realize that after the last 20 years of misery I don’t know what else they need to see.
CJH may not have us in contention every year but he will make runs at it.

Yes-it was a tremendous coaching effort and the best year since probably 2003. Of course there would be a step-down this year, but you don’t lose the game in UF if you hit the portal and recruit more diligently for the pieces you lost on the oline/LB/secondary and address the staff problems. Losing to UF isn’t going to help sustain that level of success. I hope the freshman and sophomore classes have some guys that can, but we’ll see those same struggles next year if they can’t establish the run and pass protect for Nico. And blaming the fans isn’t going to fix it because they can’t do that for the coaching staff. They did their job by showing up and supporting the team. The coach needs to do his job and address the issues or that season we all enjoyed is the best you’re getting. Pointing these problems out doesn’t mean you’re not appreciative. Championship programs aren’t built in memorializing one great season and then getting complacent. That’s why Fulmer only got one trophy.
