Hey cuonzo

Cal fans feel the same way about him as we do. He also underachieved there then left in the middle of the night. Missouri was exceptionally stupid for hiring him but they did it to land the Porter brothers, which did absolutely nothing for them in either the short or long term.

Here's a quote from his departure from Cal.
The abrupt exit came the morning after the Bears dropped their NIT first-round game to Cal State Bakersfield in embarrassing fashion at Haas Pavilion. Martin had been steadfast this past week that Cal was his priority.

As a coach, the last place you want to be is in the toughest conference at the school that spends the least money. Mizzou is that place. If Cuonzo had success with the Porter brothers and kept last year’s talent on the team, he might have a slightly better record. That said, It’s a different world in 2022 than it was in the 80’s or 90’s. A school like Mizzou is an insurance policy for failure. If they want to change their fate, they’ll have to change the way they think about the sport, and spend a lot more than they do.

That's my big issue with him is that he's a very disingenuous person. People that claim he's a good guy are either ignorant to the situation or have similar character issues that Cuonzo displays.

Even if Martin has that 10 million dollar buyout, I think Missouri may fire him unless he has a tremendous SEC Tournament run to the finals.
How's he gonna make a run in the SEC tournament? You have to have the players for that to happen and he doesn't have them.

Yes, he's good at getting out of town, left out in the "he's a victim" narrative is that we offered him a 300,000 dollar raise and extension and he still left, and it was spun like we fired him unjustly. He used our resources to land a new job and recruited a player for his new job on our dime too.

Dude. Even if he had made a Final Four that year, the fact remains, he’s been a college basketball coach for 14 seasons, and in 13 of those seasons, he’s failed to win even a single NCAA tournament game.

And honestly it was very nearly 14/14, people forget that S16 run started with an OT win vs Iowa in the First Four

At the time, I lived in Dayton, Oh and attended that game. Josh Richardson made some unexplainable crazy good moves to lift Tennessee to victory that night.

Come on, now...

I'm the furthest thing from a Cuonzo zealot, but at least be honest about his situation in your criticism.

Your above, bolded statement, couldn't be further from the truth. He had improved Missouri State each of his three years, there, and had just won the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title in his third year as head coach, and just narrowly missed winning the conference tourney, losing by 4 to Indiana State in the championship game.

He wasn't anywhere close to being fired. There are plenty of reasons to criticize him without the revisionist history.

He would have petered out there, he wasn't on anyone's list when UT came calling. No way of knowing but I'm of the opinion he would be long gone.

Thanks for leaving.....looks like there was about 3800 at the arena tonight

Times have changed (THANK GOODNESS!) I can remember about that many fans in TBA when I was a student 1997-1999. About 5 minutes into the game they would announce over the load-speaker: "We invite all fans in the upper deck to come on down and get a better seat"......

Course, the LADY VOL games were always SOLD-OUT!

That happened often during the buzz ball era.

Really. Since Tennessee' first appearance NCAA tournament in 1967, only 2 Tennessee Men's Basketball teams have won 3 games within the same NCAA tournament. Martin's 2014 team was 1 of the 2.

Were you one of the 10,000 racist idiots?
I thought he was a good tourney coach but he struggled in the regular session.

Cuonzo’s coaching style and offense may be expired. His leaving UT was complex, but best for him and for us. Hard to assign fault. He wasn’t doing well here, we we looked stupid in how we treated him. Separation was healthy. Cal pulled a bit of a bait and switch on him. They assured him they’d relax admissions to win, and then the president drew a line in the sand and rejected several admissions of kids with grades that would’ve been fine at another state school. He wasn’t doing well with middling talent, and Mizzou offered him 20mm guaranteed to come home. At the time, he had some sick relatives there too. They did so to heal some wounds with their own racial issues. His career there has been a mess with the Porter brothers not panning out, transfers and injuries. He’s stubborn on doing things his way. His offense is really boring. He tells kids to transfer if they don’t buy in. That said, the guy is a fighter. He beat cancer. He is loved by players who do but in. The game just passed him. There’s no real reason for us to worry about him now. He’s long gone. He’ll have a very hard time succeeding there with the limited resources they have.

You manufactured a lot from a few words of mine.

Martin sucks as a coach. Not because he's black. Because he sucks. I don't respect the guy because he is unethical. How he went about getting the job at Cal is trash.

Idiots like yourself screaming racism for no reason are the reason racism is as bad as it is.

This particular situation aside, blaming racism on claims of racism is like blaming fires on claims of arson.

I have no reason to doubt that Martin probably got some racist comments his way. If he felt he needed to leave, then that's up to him. I don't know him, I'm not a minority so I'm not going to pretend to walk his shoes and I'm not going to tell him how he's supposed to feel.

But what I will say is his slow starts every season put him in a hole that he had to keep digging out of. All 3 seasons he'd hit a spot in the second half of the season where the team would start playing like we had hoped. And every season he had head scratching losses (ex. Austin Peay). But TBA was pretty rocking by the end of each season as well so you can't say the fans didn't show up.

Whoever followed Pearl was going to find it hard to follow that act, and it didn't help the Martin personality wise is very different than Pearl. He's quiet, not a lot of fanfare, etc. And it's not like Tyndall was exactly embraced by the whole fanbase either. He had a few diehards who swore by him but generally IMO it seemed like people overall were less accepting of Tyndall because he seemed like we weren't getting better with replacement coaches. And I'll also add Martin hasn't exactly had great success anywhere else he went. His S16 run here is still his best season as a HC.

Josh Richardson was the primary reason for that first win, not Martin. JR carried the team on his back that night.

LET IT GO AND MOVE ON!!! What does kicking a man when he’s down gain for you? No this isn’t Cuonzo’s mom posting
What does toting Cuonzo’s water and attempting to be the moral compass of the board gain for you? Asking for a friend.

I don't know how the seats were assigned, season tickets vs single game, etc., but I would have been chapped if I had to fork out some big bucks for seats in the lower level and a single game ticket holder for $13 came on down to the lower level and sat next to me.

Horrible analogy seeing as though the person you quoted never said that. I took the inference as meaning actual racism doesn’t get taken as seriously as it should due to a certain segment of minorities and even woke people who happen to be white crying foul when a situation often has nothing to do with race. Seems to me the people that see race in every fiber of their existence have the real race issue

You ought to spend more time worrying about yourself and less time worrying about your brother.

I hated interviews that Gonzo did. Couldn't understand a word he said. It was a jumbled, mumbled mess.
