Commitment is a word better taught through action and example rather than vocabulary and lesson, and the onus is on the home and the parents to be that example.

Education is and always has been a simple equation. You get what you put in and the rewards of hard work are exponential. I have students in the same class, listening to the same lecture, completing the same work, and I add, blessed with the same ability who score completely different during an assessment. Why? Effort trumps ability every time when all things are equal.

I had 27 kids earn an F one year on a report card because they simply refused to turn in the assignments. 27 out of 75. I had one parent of those 27 contact me. Education is not valued at home any longer.

I could write an entire book on this, but for the sake of brevity and the fact that it's Saturday, and I really just want to read about my vols hosting some absolute beasts this weekend, followed by a game of ultimate frisbee, before watching what I hope will be a beat down of Memphis...I'll stop here. 😀 Go Vols!
Couldn’t agree more. It starts and stops AT HOME. Parents that are involved, loving, demanding, interested etc with their children create smart, confident, socially adapted children. No teacher can erase or instill those values if they aren’t first ingrained at home. Not even a question about it.

Your possessing a degree in education and bringing this up is kinda like the mechanic asking, “Where do I pop the hood?”

Teach spelling? 🤨🤔

Phonics anyone?
After retiring from the Air Force, We moved to South Carolina. My kids were finishing up high school mid year and they were enrolled in an EBONICS class! I also believe a big problem with the youth today is a lot are coddled and home taught. If there is no commitment from the parents they don't get the schooling they need, plus they have no people skills.

Time to coin a new term describing the prospective college student athlete: currentment.

currentment (noun): 1. a student athlete who pledges his or her attendance and services to certain college or university for an unspecified length of time. 2. the announcement given by a student athlete to a college or university for an unspecified length of time. 3. a potential candidate for the portal. 4. a commitment long shot.

Used in a sentence: The University of Hard Knox received its 48th currentment for the 2020 signing class.

Really? Do you think if we taught spelling that young people today might know the difference between there/their or loss/lose/loose or hundreds of other words and meanings? I do.

Ok...learning the difference between homonyms is what your referring to...., which is an important skill to learn in elementary school. Vocabulary comprehension is only loosely related to precise spelling. For example, my boss has a PhD in Nuclear Engineering. Hes a terrible speller, with a highly technical vocabulary....

That was not my point that it was the high school teachers sole responsibility to teach all word meanings. I guess I should have stressed that spelling in general helps students lear word meaning and a general use of the English language. I would like to think that students knew what many words meant prior to the high school level.

Alternate definition: commitment, doing whatever you feel like doing today.

That's normally not a spelling issue. It's a usage issue. Unless someone pulls a thier or a loosse or something like that, it's not spelling.

And we're isolating it to the "young people today," even though many adults type "pocket presents" or "receiving core"? No words were misspelled in the previous sentence, by the way.

I have been a teacher for many years, and I teach vocabulary regularly. If anyone here knows of a way how teaching the word "commitment" will automatically translate into a student demonstrating that quality, please let me know.

So if an institution decides to terminate a head coach before the tenure is up (after they have committed to a contract), can educators fix that lack of understanding of commitment, too?

Basically a kid from a household that values education will generally succeed academically. One from a household that doesn’t care will generally fail. Some failures of the education system for sure is on teachers but for the most part the parents are going to decide success or failure. They’re also going to decide which values are instilled into kids.

This, and all day long

Sorry ... loss/lose/loose are not homonyms but your spelling was perfect. ;)

Regarding your statement that "vocabulary comprehension is only loosely related to precise spelling", well we're just going to have to agree to disagree. Most studies that I have read state the following and I quote ... "Students who tend to struggle with spelling also tend to struggle with reading fluency and reading comprehension. Since spelling is closely linked to both reading fluency and comprehension, students need to strive to improve their spelling skills."

It seems you know the definition of "cherry picking"....

I'll continue to teach my children to become better readers through research driven reading strategies. You teach yours to win spelling bees.

It is very important to the oligarchs who now enjoy complete control of our government and our economy that the general population remain extremely ignorant.

Aye have two disagree. Aye be leave that won can spell words correctly and still knot no there meaning oar usage.

I find it sad that today the reader has to overlook poor spelling, improper word use and poor sentence structure when reading this message board and various other social media posts. I certainly am no expert in education as my degree and background are in business but I strongly believe that the degradation of the written word (as well as verbal communication) has been brought about by the abandonment or lack of emphasis on spelling and grammar by our educational system. This is not the fault of "young people" but unfortunately they have been the most affected by the perpetual "dumbing down of America" which continues on in a downward spiral as the teachers of today are themselves victims.

I did, or more truthfully, my wife did teach our kids spelling along with grammar and mathmetics. Both our offspring were college graduates and found meaningful and profitable employment. I wish the same for yours.

It is very obvious to me that high school students do not have a clue what the word commitment means. Actually a commitment by a student athlete is really not worth a dime until he signs on the dotted line. Your word is no longer your bond(hasn't been for decades). lt It is my understanding that many schools across America do not even teach spelling any longer. Word meaning and reading comprehension are severely lacking also. And we wonder why our public secondary schools are so far behind in the education of our children. As a holder of a BS Degree in Secondary Education it is so obvious to me why so many children are being home schooled, as well as private schools are increasing in attendance daily ! So, fellow teachers if you cannot teach spelling in high schools across America, please, at least please explain to them what a few words mean.
I think often times, the school encourages a player to look elsewhere should the school land a player who is better suited. Yes, it's easy get aggravated at the player, because they are the one making the announcement of pulling their commitment. JMO

Offer = Courting/Dating
Commitment = Engagement
Signing = Done Deal
It goes both ways...athlete keeps looking for better opportunity...school keeps looking for better players.

100% correct. Parents should not assume that someone else is going to teach their children values and what it takes to have character when they become adults. It is even more difficult when the parents split.

Public education is crap for the most part. I have a HS degree and two college degrees. Better than nothing, but a lot of need for improvement.
