High School teachers please explain !

That was not my point that it was the high school teachers sole responsibility to teach all word meanings. I guess I should have stressed that spelling in general helps students learn word meaning and a general use of the English language. I would like to think that students knew what many words meant prior to the high school level.
Posters on here need to learn what a "recruit" is, as opposed to a "potential recruit."

It is very obvious to me that high school students do not have a clue what the word commitment means. Actually a commitment by a student athlete is really not worth a dime until he signs on the dotted line. Your word is no longer your bond(hasn't been for decades). lt It is my understanding that many schools across America do not even teach spelling any longer. Word meaning and reading comprehension are severely lacking also. And we wonder why our public secondary schools are so far behind in the education of our children. As a holder of a BS Degree in Secondary Education it is so obvious to me why so many children are being home schooled, as well as private schools are increasing in attendance daily ! So, fellow teachers if you cannot teach spelling in high schools across America, please, at least please explain to them what a few words mean.

The real answer is because your generation progressively defunded education. Your asinine anger is misplaced. Blame the country's leaders not the students or the massively underfunded teachers.

Mods can we get this nonsense moved to the Offtopic forum?

Aye have two disagree. Aye be leave that won can spell words correctly and still knot no there meaning oar usage.

I find it sad that today the reader has to overlook poor spelling, improper word use and poor sentence structure when reading this message board and various other social media posts. I certainly am no expert in education as my degree and background are in business but I strongly believe that the degradation of the written word (as well as verbal communication) has been brought about the abandonment or lack of emphasis on spelling and grammar by our education system. This is not fault of "young people" but unfortunately they have been the most affected by the perpetual "dumbing down of America" which continues on in a downward spiral as the teachers of today are themselves victims.
Blame it on the teacher unions.

So it’s the high school teachers job to teach what a commitment means ???

Interesting take
I was gonna go with dumb take, but I guess interesting works as well. Most teachers are too busy teaching the virtues of socialism and “wokeness” to get into inconsequential things like math, English, honest history and what words like commitment mean.

“Defunded” education? Lol. Education spending is continually increased and through the roof only to be poured down a freaking rathole with no tangible results. In fact, the cities and states with the most spending produce the worse results, the kids come away from those areas no knowing how to spell, write or do any math. But they sure as hell know how to put a rubber on a banana and how to sing the praises of Mao Tse Tung was.

Gtho with that mess.

You're wrong and making generalizing statements about teachers makes you look like an idiot.

In too many states, “public investment in K-12 schools, which are crucial for communities to thrive and the U.S. economy to offer broad opportunity, has declined dramatically in recent years,” said Michael Leachman, a co-author of the report.

U.S. spending on elementary and high school education declined 3 percent from 2010 to 2014 even as its economy prospered and its student population grew slightly by 1 percent, boiling down to a 4 percent decrease in spending per student. That's according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's annual report of education indicators, released last week.

I blame Little Nicky, Slick Rick, Underwater basket weaving Roy. Not enough cars, hookers, and fake classes to go around.

I don’t know about that . I think I’ve been pretty easy on UNC fans about the fake classes stuff. I actually know 3 people who were enrolled in a few.

I don’t even know what this thread is about. I just was responding to you. Haha

Getting good grades was so hard that North Carolina changed a F from a 70 to a 60 to increase graduation numbers. I don't know how it is in Tennessee, but i know i would be excited to hire someone that can do their job 3 out of 5 times. The no child gets ahead program has succeeded. Sorry. It was the no child left behind program. What was i thinking? Having said all that, teach your kids at home if you actually want them to learn.

I received my degree even though I never in a 1000 years cared about college and gave minimal effort in high school. Funny thing is a lot I mean a ton of smart kids in school never went to college. So first and foremost I applaud you for obtaining your degree and secondly the dedication to get your college degree kind of goes into play with a ton of things in life you may set out to do just like following up with a commitment.

This thread is like the chicken and egg argument. Did the thread drive the OP to drinking or was he drinking when he made the OP?

I think you have the wrong "generation" in mind. The older generations put a lot more emphasis on the importance of education, not just in awarding "participation trophies" so no one's feelings were hurt. The education system has been so watered down by the PC crowd, that there are kids that are even graduating early with a diploma that they cannot even read.

As the parent of a high schooler, and commenting on just his school (a so-called STEM school), it seems like the curriculum and coursework is designed more for the success of the teacher as opposed to the student. In my state, teachers are a protected class. But, that's just my impression from the experience of my two guys.

I can tell you it is designed for the student to succeed with little help from the teacher. But, the teachers job now depends on how the student does on the State test. So because of that we as teachers can't give the students the education they need. It's on our ass to teach them what the State wants us to teach them, and not what they need to know

i totally agree with with what you say. I didn't mean to imply that the teachers are designing the curriculum. For the motivated student, there is great opportunity to shine academically, albeit frustratingly. (If that's even a word). However, for the borderline student, the glide path is more of a maintenance one to just get him to pass the grade and not be held back. This benefits the school for its grading, I suppose.
(My wife is a retired elementary school teacher, btw)
