Home run - Terrible hire

1. Jon Gruden - Brings the name recognition and NFL connections that recruits eat up. Plus he LOVES football.

2. Charlie Strong - Very strong (pun) SEC resume with the right kind attributes to be successful in the SEC.

3. Al Golden - He did well at Temple and has shown a lot of integrity and class through the crappy deal he got at Miami. I think he has the right mindset for a quality HC.

4. Kirby Smart - Not many Saban assistants succeed without him.

I didn't see this segment, but I heard that the Enrichment Sports Source guys did this so I wanted to see what you guys think.
Name four coaches.
1. Your home run hire
2. The guy you want if we don't get a "home run" hire
3. If UT has to seriously SETTLE on someone, who could you talk yourself into being okay with?
4. A hire that would make you flip out like the Scut Farkus Affair.

Try to make these somewhat realistic. Don't even waste your time naming guys like Jim Harbaugh or Chip Kelly. And under the "settle" pick, put a guy you think would really be far down on our list. So don't put someone like Chris Petersen under "settle".

1. Jon Gruden
2. Gary Patterson
3. Gus Malzahn
4. Al Golden

1. Jon Gruden
2. Larry Fedora/Willie Taggart
3. Al Golden/Greg Roman
4. Bobby Petrino/Kirby Smart/Jim Tressel

And this is your list of homerun hires withholding Gruden who is on a level far above the rest, these other guys are a last minute failure in waiting. Especially Golden who is a proven loser. Now Strong would be a possibility, but by far not a homecrun. More like a 2 tier coach a school would settle on. Do you hear Arkansas going after these losers. No and if we settle for Golden, Hart should automatically be fired and if its Strong, he has some serious explaining as to why he didn't get Gruden or go after Butch Davis or Patterson or even Stoops. I realize Gruden may not happen but it shouldn't be because Hart didn't try everything possible. If then we fail to get him, there are much much better choices than Golden and Strong!

Did you miss the op?
1. homerun hire
2. who you want if not a homerun
3. if we "settle", who are you ok with
4. who do you not want.

1. Gruden - Good history, street cred, and the fan base is behind him. He is THE home run hire.

2. Patterson - Long, solid HC experience and clean compliance record.

3. Fisher - People forget how shaky FSU was before he took over. He started recruiting and coaching well right from the start. One of the few 'coaches in waiting' that was worth the wait. I believe the guy is the real deal and FSU would be crazy to let him walk.

4. Petrino - For obvious reasons.

BTW ... GREAT job OP. I love it when people actually start thoughtful, intelligent conversation. :good!:

Agree totally on 1 and 2. Couldn't disagree more about Fisher. FSU has had 5 straight solid recruiting classes and he still underachieves with the absolute most talent in a weak ACC. He's one of if not the biggest under achiever coaches in the country.

1. Homer: Gruden (Earth-shaking hire heard around the football world.)

2. Settler: Gundy (Well worth taking a look at, especially if he's got T Boone issues.)

3. Solid:

Davis (If cleared of NCAA blame related to UNC mess. Has experience building a program from a low-ebb to elite-level status.)

Strong (Predecessor left him nothing at UL and he's built well on that for his level.)

Fisher (Time to bail out of ACC stinking ship?)

Mora Jr. (Like what he's done at UCLA. Does he want to leave Cali?)

4. Mattress-burning:

Kirby Smart (A sign Hart never engaged in a serious process. Stay away from coaches who haven't proven they can do it without Saban.)

Phil Fulmer (Not convinced he has the fire for this program he once had in the 1990s.)

Easy Rider Petrino (Doesn't leave programs in good shape. See Louisville and, to a lesser extent, Arkansas. Decent taste in blondes, however.)

A guy under a 5-year NCAA show cause order is your 1a. "homerun" hire?

NC his second season at Ohio State, Emmert said Tressel would be cleared if he was offered a job, but would be under NCAA scrutiny the first 3 seasons since thats how long his show clause has left after this season ends...not only that but the kids that play for him, respect and love the guy like a father, im not so convinced Gruden would succeed as a College coach, hes an NFL guy, that means piddly when it comes to coaching college.
