Honesty is the best policy, this hire is a joke.

Classy post. It's always good to make light of people that battled and overcame cancer. Jesus, man.

Make light, or hire coaches because of it? I didn't make fun of the guy for having cancer, all the best to him for beating such a terrible affliction, but him beating that and being from East St. Louis are the only credentials this man has?

Just a hunch, but I don't believe he was hired because he had cancer.

Look, my joke was out of line and I apologize greatly for it.

I guess my frustration is hearing an AD introduce a new head coach and the only positives he can explain come from his personal life. I'm just worried about where we could head if this turns south. Best of luck to him, but sometimes the risk is greater than the reward, and this might be one of those times.

Meh. MH isn't in the top ten best public speakers in the state of Tennessee.

We'll see his positives in recruiting and in getting good basketball out of his players, or we won't. MH's comments were white noise, filler, for me. I want to hear what Martin says, and then I want to see what he does.

I think this goes in line with a lot of Vol fans who have watched all this play out. Other than him turning around a mid-major, he's never made the tourney as a HC, never really recruited in the South, and if he possibly brings his entire staff from MSU, that might be an even bigger cause for concern. So, people have good reason to be skeptical right now. I want to see him coach though, before forming to large of an opinion of him.

Agreed on all fronts. I guess it's also frustrating to take a risk and then not really know much about it for another 8 months.

Don't kid yourself. You've already formed a large opinion of him. You don't think he's going to be successful for a host of reasons that include being endorsed by Alan Houston and Ernie Grunfeld. After seeing you say that and seeing you voice concern over hiring a mid-major coach while at the same time building up Rick Byrd like he's Pat Riley, I have difficulty taking you seriously.

Affliction. Not disease. A disease is something you can never overcome.

You don't know what I have formed, yet you have formed an opinion about the possible opinion I have formed. I want to give the guy a chance to coach and recruit a season or two, before I say this guy truly sucks. Basketball is easier to turn around in a shorter time span than football. I have even said that if Dooley isn't at the 9 win plateau by 2012, then he needs to be run.

actually I have a hard time believing anyone could read about our new coach and come away with the word average

THANK YOU!!!...In case anyone hasn't noticed, CCM could be the long term solution to what everyone seems to consider a short term problem..Ethics and leadership are HUGE when building a programs tradition, not just wins...What has anyone brought out about CCM that would make them think he won't succeed??..So far all I've seen is a bunch of opinionated bs, apparently driven more by disappointment over not hiring a "big name" coach than excitement over the prospect of hiring what could be the next "big name" coach of the future..The prospects of luring a "big name" coach to UT with everything that has happened, and still will happen, were slim to none...Yet some posters here think if UT threw enough money out it would happen...Well so much for that idea...Coach Martin has arrived on the UT campus with glowing recommendations from folks whose opinions are greatly respected...And his personal resume' speaks for itself..Average is not even close to a description for CCM...IMO it might not be the BIGGEST hire UT could have made, but it might just turn out to be the BEST one in the long run...Until time proves otherwise, cut some slack and drop the word "average" in describing CCM....

JMHO :twocents:

Oh great, the sympathy post, well played. You've known the man for 4 hours, why shouldn't you know everything about him?

Yes, you are correct; it was a sympathy post. My sympathies go out to you for showing your ignorance and callowness for all of VN to read.

Well, one positive is that we won't be embarassing ourselves in the NCAA tourney anymore......since we will not be back there for a long while.

Bad hire.

Dooley and Martin will bring some character back, but wins? Nope.

I can't wait for you to eat these words.

If all we wanted was someone who could run a clean program UT should have just kept Don DeVoe for 30 more years.

FWIW, Here's Don Devoe's Head Coaching resume' before being hired at UT:

Virginia Tech Hokies (Independent) (1971–1976)

1971–1972 Virginia Tech 16–10
1972–1973 Virginia Tech 22–5 NIT Championship
1973–1974 Virginia Tech 13–13
1974–1975 Virginia Tech 16–10
1975–1976 Virginia Tech 21–7 NCAA 1st Round
Devoe's record at Virginia Tech: 88–45

Wyoming Cowboys (Western Athletic Conference) (1976–1978)

1976–1977 Wyoming 17–10 8–6 T–3rd
1977–1978 Wyoming 12–15 3–11 7th

Devoe's record at Wyoming: 29–25 11–17

IMO Martin's resume' to succeed Pearl is more appealing than Devoe's was to succeed Mears.....
