Hong Kong + the West vs. China vs. Corporations

So wait to be clear:

We should shame the NBA for doing business with China

We should shame the players for not being more outspoken with China

We have no problem with our own country doing business with China.

Well as long as we’re consistent.
LeBron and others in the NBA want to have it both ways, either they want to be wanna be SJWs or they don't. I actually don't care what they think about anything and would prefer they would shut up and dribble

I don't watch that crap and I don't know anyone that watches that crap therefore I'm correct.
If the NBA was such a huge draw why are they only on cable TV?
What channel they appear on is irrelevant. They will go to who pays them the most money. And clearly they have a following, and a large one at that, if they are getting $8 billion dollars. You, your friends, and family’s sensibilities are not relevant. They aren’t getting paid $8 billon dollars for no viewers.

They’re race baiters creating faux racial outrage here but in China their views change drastically.

So while in a authoritarian country you want them to speak out against that country? Would you have the balls to speak out against the Chinese government, on tv, while being in that country?

With no sense of irony, you shame Lebron for being soft on China/Hong Kong while your beloved POTUS, who is the leader of the free world, is even softer on China/Hong Kong.

Why do you get to have it both ways?

So you put them in a position in the first place to be concerned about their well being if something is said or even possibly interpreted as disrespectful to the authoritarian government?

I did not put them anywhere. But before you screech about the NBA please show me your outrage of the government doing business with China. I mean we often criticize their human rights record but never have a problem taking their money. Seems like the .gov should be where any anger is focused. Bc the NBA is a much smaller problem then the government.

Viewership is dipping for all of TV and live sports are the reason the decline isn't much more precipitous. ESPN's plan isn't to cover the **** out of the NBA to raise interest so games get more viewers. They have the NBA because it's one of the big 2 sports. Their plan is to cover the **** out of the NBA because they have hundreds of hours of television to schedule each week and ardent fans will watch.

Ok. Maybe the drop off isn’t as much as I think, and just maybe the NBA isn’t quite as interesting as you may think it is to the masses from a viewing standpoint. Obviously it is very lucrative, which is the main reason for this thread.

Most things are not for the masses and even fewer things are appointment TV. There are too many entertainment options. Subscription revenue is rising in importance relative to advertising revenue. NBA is one of the few market segments that brings both subscribers and large ad revenue.

Thanks for clearing that up, I know YOU didn’t. I was referring to the NBA as a whole. Luckily nobody had any problems and everyone got back safely without incident. LeBron did have a tough week though. I’m sure he’ll have a helluva group therapy session with his liked minded Posse on The Shop.

Side note: I’ve mostly been a LeBron fan for the majority of his career, he’s an amazing talent. One of the greatest of all time. However, in recent years his brand has seemed to take an equal priority to winning, and the irony today of him accusing someone else of being uninformed is just another instance of me not seeing eye to eye with him on social issues .

He should have said something along the lines of no comment. And him calling the Rockets guy uninformed was stupid. Now, with regard to his personal brand, of course it’s more important to him then winning. He makes peanuts playing basketball compared to his other business interests. He is a very shrewd business man.

Trump is at least trying to make a better trade deal. We have a chance to support hing kong and freedom but the dollar is more important. We were the beacon of freedom but no longer.

Most of his advertisers are pretty much communists too. Nike isn't much better. They'd sell out America for an extra buck.

Wait, so it's OK for Trump to ignore Hong Kong because of economic reasons but it's not OK for NBA players to ignore Hong Kong for economic reasons?

What is this? How is this a thing that adults do? We judge entertainment personalities more harshly than politicians? What?

So the leader of the free world gets a pass for economic reasons but not the NBA. Yea that makes sense. Who do you think has more knowledge about Chinese human rights abuses Trump or Lebron?

I understand what ypur saying. But we've sold our soul economically to the communists for decades. It would take decades to reverse. Didnt trump try to encourage businesses to do business with other countries than china?
