Horrible coaching at end of purdue game

Why McBee? He has proved nothing. I would take Tyler Smith or Hopson any day over those two.

Hopson? After that atrocious performance he put on today?

And has Tyler Smith even attempted a three this year? Chism has a better 3-point shot than T-Smith.

No problem with that shot. Chism, arguably our best 3 point shooter (and a senior) will knock down that shot more times than not. That 3 pointer in rhythm is a much better percentage shot than a two dribble jumper from the free throw line. Great game though

He was wide open. He was smart to have taken it. He can shoot the ball.

Agreed. And there was still enough time for a rebound and a putback at the point that Wayne shot it. The shot didn't go, we didn't get the rebound, ballgame. How many people here would rather have had Maze take that shot?

So here's the "elephant in the room:" if we can coach a decent half-court play, does Bruce call a timeout and set something up?

Now this is an interesting point. Maybe the reason Pearl never calls timeout in that situation is because he's self-aware to know that the guys on the other bench are probably going to chew him up and spit him out.

I want Wayne to be closer to the basket, where he belongs when we are down by 1.

Yep. I've been wondering the same thing myself...that's why I haven't criticized the lack of a TO. If the point of a TO is to allow the coach to setup a play, and both sides get to set a play, then I might not take a TO.

Hopson is by far our best shooter, I'll still take him even after his performance, he's a shooter. Smith would have taken it to 15ft and shot, we didn't need a 3. McBee should not be on the floor at this point. Smith and Chism shoot around the same % career from 3 by the way. Chism is not a 3 point sharp shooter by any stretch of the imagination. I still don't blame him, he was put in the situation and took it.

I'll take Chism in a clutch situation 100x over Hopson until he can come through in a big game against good competition. I agree Hopson is a better shooter overall. Just don't trust the kid right then - especially with the miserable performance.

And of course I would take Tyler off the dribble - but I was strictly speaking who I would want taking the 3-point shot in that situation - that's why I had McBee in there as well (if the original plan was to go for the 3-point shot - which it wasn't so he wasn't in there - sub him in right before the 2nd FT since he's a liability on defense but could possibly sneak open like Chism did on the play).

The only reason Tyler has a 3-point % remotely close to Chism is because Chism takes way too many horrible threes. He'll hit the open one more consistently than Tyler will.

Yeah, and if he drains the three, Pearl is great huh? UTHorsey is obviously a fair weather fan. Bruce Pearl is one of the best college coaches in the nation. GO VOLS.

If TN could have avoided the 8 minutes of no scoring during the 2nd half we wouldn't be talking about a last second shot to win the game.

That's just another day at the office for a Bruce Pearl coached team.

All you haters need to shut up, we played a good game and I was excited all the way through. As a fan, sometimes you have to understand that there are gonna be close losses. As said above, there is no way last years team would have played Purdue that close. We look really good this year, and after this first loss, this first taste of blood and defeat after blowing so many out, our boys will come back ready to play hard. U'd better believe that. I hate fans that aren't really fans, people who get on here and hate on a great coach and/or team like they could have done better.

If you could do better, then why the hell are you watching it on TV and typing on your computers when you could be making millions and winning championships?! Bunch of ppl who need to quit be poser vols and go find some other team to hate on.

I spit on you!

GO VOLS! Good job Bruce and keep up the good work!

If he had attacked the basket then I would agree with that decision. But all you people that say he should dribble and pull up from the FT line must not pay much attention. I would take a catch-and-shoot 3pt attempt over a one dribble pull-up from Chism all day long. Can you name for me the last time you saw Chism put the ball on the floor and hit a pull up jump shot? He is much, much better with a catch and shoot.

I have not hated on a great coach.

I have hated on Bruce Pearl.

If you don't see the problems with how this team is coached, then you either have orange goggles on or you don't follow basketball that much.

i dont get why everyone is so upset. they lost to the number 6th team in the country early in the season. They had 2 wide open shots to win the game(tatum and chism). I mean what more can you ask for. You take a wide open shot every time. they could have played better but its early and the team has to build chemistry

The sky is falling, the sky is falling... Tennessee lost by 1 point to a #6 ranked team at the first of the season.

Teams like North Carolina don't loose games at the first of the season.... oh, wait....

It's a long season folks, chill out and let the good times roll

Love it when the team "fans" resort to name calling and personal attacks against playeres on their team when that team loses a close game against a higher ranked opponent. With friends like these...

Rant is all they can do. They have no basketball knowledge. So ranting and name calling is all that is left.

Winning the game that was there's for the taking. That's what.

yeah you want to win thats a given. the vols rallied from 5 down to put themselves in position to do that. But why would you be upset when you had your chance to win. sometimes those shots fall in and sometime they dont. but the kep is they put themselves in position to win the game

We played solid defense at the end of the game and had a wide open look to win the ball game....He rushed the shot...He had more time to take his normal rhythm shot. All you can do is put yourself in a position to win.

Anyone saying Wayne should have put the ball on the floor has never watched him play. Bad things happen when he is away from the post area and puts the ball on the floor.

If you want to blame anyone blame Maze for dribbling into a dead end.

An early loss to a good team, may be good for this squad. We need to shore up something at PG. A little loose with the passing game. Too many give aways last night. We do look look awfully athletic though.
