Horrible coaching at end of purdue game

So you're saying you want Chism to get a charge called on him? Someone was under the basket.

They wouldn't have called a cheap blocking foul more than likely either with the game on the line under 5 seconds.

What I would have liked to see is a timeout. If we had gone straight to the basket, it would be fine to not call the time out. As soon as we backed it out, we lose nothing by calling a time out there. How many charges did you see called tonight? Maybe one. Everything was ticky tack on the defense. I would take the chances on drawing a foul (in this game especially) before I take the chances on a 6'10" center taking a last second three off of one pass. If a play had been run, I might not have a problem with him taking it if he can shoot in rhythm, but not off one pass.

Refs going to swallow the whistle late in the game. Far less fouls called as the game went on. Bruce doesn't take TOs late in the game like that. Think we covered all that. Wayne took the shot - nothing wrong with it. Blame Maze for dribbling into the corner - Chism had a good look at took it.

And if he had made the shot, Pearl would be a genius right now. We played a top team and lost by one point. Not 10, not 20, but one point. Why so much bitterness toward Pearl? I don't get it.

I wouldn't agree with him taking the shot even if he hit it. I would have been happy but with that much time we should have gotten a better look.

I like Wayne's chances waaay more taking a 3-pointer where he can set his feet and has time over a pull up jumper from the FT line.

Chism makes the occasional timely 3 but that is a low % shot for him. There is no way that is the shot you want to win the game, sorry.

Yeah - it is based on the circumstances - sorry. Sure - a wide open layup is the ideal shot, but how often does that happen, lol.

Look at some of our shot selection last year when the game was on the line. 1000x better than what we got last year.

Why didn't you quote my whole post? You know, the part where I said the only reason we are relevant in the world of basketball is Pearl?

Look, I don't think he's the greatest coach in the world, but until I see some elite coaches wanting to come to UT, I'm happy with what we've got.

I don’t have a problem with you criticizing the team and/or coach. I do have a problem with you not allowing others the same privilege without jumping on them. It’s rather hypocritical.

I would say about the same since we still lost. I love Pearl but not calling a time out when the initial penetration didn't happen was a mistake.

I'm not defending Pearl at all. We all knew he wasn't going to call a TO so I wasn't even going to bother debating his decision.

I'm just defending Chism. He had a great, wide open look and took it.

People would be singing a whole different tune if he had made the shot.

So here's the "elephant in the room:" if we can coach a decent half-court play, does Bruce call a timeout and set something up?

This has been my point all along...as soon as we decided to back it out, we lose nothing by calling a time out and setting up a play.

I see your point, fair enough. What I said about the masses of volnation was more or less a direct attack, my apologies.

Plenty to lose.

For sure, but that chance was around 24% or so. I wouldn't want Chism to drive, I just would have like to seen a set play to get the ball inside.

It was the best look available to him. Maze chose to put him in that situation. He knows his skill set. He knows he has a far greater chance of hitting a wide open three that he doesn't have to rush rather than hitting a pull up jumper from the FT line.

Not necessarily helping his professional aspirations.

But one pass and a 3 from your center is great. I guess we have to agree to disagree on this one. A senior has to know we need a better look. I like Chism's confidence but smarts trumps confidence unless you are a guard taking that shot. Chism hits the three every now and then but not enough to take the last shot. During the course of the game yes, last second no.

Maze couldn't have put him in that situation if he'd been down low looking for the ball where he should have been. For a good offensive center to be wandering around 20 feet from the basket when you're down by one with 10 seconds left is ridiculous.

I like Chism taking that 3 over every player on our team not named Cameron Tatum or Skylar McBee.

Blame the coach - not the player.

Well - I'm glad he would take the shot that gives his team the best chance to win rather than the one that will earn him the most money.

I hear you. I just think that the talent we have should have afforded us more than a 33% chance to win the game on the last possession.

I'm sure he thought he was taking that shot with 8 sec. on the clock...we don't know what he was thinking but I can agree that this is as much on the point guard as Chism. He should know Chism's skill set (it's a PG job to know the players around him) and he should know that there are other players on the floor that we would rather have shooting. Maybe the players should call a time out if Bruce isn't going to...who knows.

As a high school coach, those are always the discussions that are being had on the sidelines. If you don't call a time out and somehow you catch them in a mismatch or "hit" an open shot, it's a great call. Sometimes you call the time out and turn the ball over on the inbounds and it's a terrible call. Coaches are used to that criticism, but some of you are always such "geniuses" after the fact.

Tennessee played the number 7 team in the country to one possession during the second week of the season. Learn from it and move forward. Obviously their number 10 ranking isn't far off base.
