Scottish with (ugh) British....and my paternal grandfather's mother as well as my maternal grandmother's father were both eastern band Cherokee. Weird part is how much these ancestries could remain a part of my family considering how many years were involved...the craziest thing are the older family members that still bear Scottish accents...even though they've been in the Appalachian hills for many, many years now. I swear that my wife's grandfather (first generation American whose parents were from Italy) has less of an Italian accent than some of my grandfather's family's accents. I don't think that this has anything to do with the original topic...but I did mention Cherokee, which is Native American, so I guess that I am safe. :p

i'm so sick of this crap, it's over, it's been 140 yrs, get over it. no one was personally involved w/ it so lets move in

You might want to check your math. Or your history. Or both. Jim Crow + Wikipedia. Google it.

But regardless, I tell you what. How about we capture you and your family, send you all off to another country, enslave you for a couple hundred years (forcing you to do manual labor nobody else is willing to do), then "free" you with restrictions on where you can eat, drink, go to the bathroom, send your kids to school, vote, etc., for another 90 years or so. Then you tell me if your descendants should just "get over it."

that's the Reverend Wright approach, use the sins of the past as a cudgel against those in the present who had nothing to do with committing those sins.

If we have to reparations for slavery, then what do the guys get who abolished slavery? How is anyone going to know if my family owned slaves or helped free them. I will wait to see if there is any gratitude for the abolitionist before worrying about reparations.

surely your first act upon any freedom would be to disavow any allegiance whatsoever to the sorry SOBs that sold your ancestors into slavery. Surely if you genuinely wanted someone to pay for the problems you would include those folks at the top of the list.

Wonder why those sellers aren't the bad guys here? Could it be the typical lawyer approach where you simply sue those with means of paying?

This i think is bringing the whole reparations thing back to the forefront.

It gives me a great idea. I can sue Queen Elizabeth, for the British Crown decimated the Highlands following Prince Charlie's rebellion, forcing my ancestors to join the British Army, and thus come to America during the 7 years war.

If i factor in 263 years as a millwright my family would have earned, rather than going on in life to be productive and relatively successful, i think i might just be able to make the final payment on my trailer.

And i don't like hearing apologies for Jim Crow. ****, everyone knows it was bad, why make a proclamation, much like Nancy Stalinosi made blaming the Turks for actions taken by the friggin OTTOMAN EMPIRE! Why exhume a grave when it will only set back progress?

Molasses to Rum? It was perfectly acceptable at the time, same as "White" and "Colored" drinking fountains and facilities were acceptable. Awful, yes, but it takes time for civilizations to evolve.

The big question is what are we doing right now that a future Congress will apologize for?

Congress should immediately apologize for this

I'm talking about your indignant stand with your silly hypothetical, acting as if reparations or apologies are in order while leaving out the folks who sold them into slavery.

I'm just reminding you that those folks doing the selling have a large hand in the final result, yet there isn't this massive outcry for an apology, or did I miss that in your little scenario.

The entire apology fight is simply laying the groundwork for a financial purpose down the road.

Here's my approach - put yourself in someone else's shoes. Try to imagine what you might feel if you were in their position, if your ancestors and family not 15 years older than you (in my case at least) weren't given the same rights as others. I'm not saying that paying reparations is the answer, but I am saying that dismissing any attempts to help the plight of those who were brought here against their will and treated like subhumans for centuries is naive. As is thinking that African Americans' plight today isn't affected by slavery and Jim Crow-type laws.
