House formally apologizes for slavery and Jim Crow

It's a frickin' apology - it's a way not to forget the tragedies that people endured for centuries. You fighting against it is as silly as me fighting against a 9-11 or WWII or Holocaust memorial, b/c hey, "It wasn't my fault. Just get over it, people."

I'd love you to explain to my 10 and 11 yr old little bros (see post above) how they shouldn't rely on any crutches like the meals at their school. Or the education they're not getting. Or the medical care they're not getting. Or the gangs recruiting them. Better yet, tell it to their single mother working 2 jobs to try to provide for them.

maybe single Mom should move away from the environment her life choices have placed her children in. It's laudable that she's working two jobs to provide for them and that she loves them. But there has to come a time when she realizes that there is still more she can do. It's ironic that you are implying that government is the answer when it's a government school that poses the greatest risk to her kids.

Maybe, but I think the issue here for many is just laziness, this particular woman obviously is happy having kids while letting the government pay for it. Many African Americans have the same problem as I see it. The older generation who lived under prejudice get a pass on it from me. The younger generation who never had to deal with those issues are just plain lazy and use history as a crutch.

Do you think she's that smart? Do you think she's found some ticket to paradise? Yes, what I'll do is put my body through pregnancy 5 times simply so that I can eat vienna sausages and ho-hos the rest of my life, contract Type 2 diabetes, watch my feet expand and die by the time I'm 40, leaving 5 kids to fend for themselves. That's the life.

you can't contract type II diabetes. there are a lot of factors involved, but none of them involve breathing bad air or touching a doorknob.

Good suggestion. Because I'm sure it's not too expensive to just pick up and move and find a clean house and new job and a good new school for her kids. Oh wait - she already did that to escape one miserable situation she was in. And she also tried as hard as she could to get them in a better school that happens to be a block away from her house. But unfortunately they weren't accepted. Oh well. I'll just tell her it's more bad life choices. That she should start making good life choices from now on.

BTW, it's a government school that's woefully underfunded and neglected b/c they've filled it with people in a similar situation as my little brothers.

okay - what language would you prefer I use? develop? get?

Obesity, hyperglycemia, lack of exercise and healthy diet - those are the primary causes for 90% of those with adult-onset diabetes.

then maybe you should take them all in, including grandmother. North Carolina's public education system is a joke anyway, particularly Charlotte's. You have a democrat dominated state legislature who are more interested in being seen at their favorite country club than actually running the state effectively.

Tell her step one is to not vote for Obama and to teach her kids not to rely on government if they ever want improve their situation in life.

I know. I have type II diabetes. And yes, the condition develops, but there are people who have it who don't fit into any of the classical risk categories.

I answered your post in another thread about feeding a family of 8 on $20. You probably didn't see it, but it's a myth that poor people can't eat healthy.

great suggestion!

Now, if we could only convince another 15 million people or so to do the exact same thing, we'd be set!

it's a better solution than allowing government to come in, take money out of your wallet, filter it through a corrupt and apathetic bureaucracy, then dole it out with little, if any, expectations on the recipients.

No, I saw it. I think someone who's been educated and brought up on the benefits of a healthy diet understands that, but most in this situation don't - they're brought up on fried, fast foods.

I worked on a product intended to help diabetes patients (I and II) manage the disease better. Diabetes sucks, and I hope a cure develops. But until then I'd like to see more people become educated on the ways to reduce the risk for Type II.

Do you think there's any chance ever of correcting 1 and 2?

no, because the politicians who use the social welfare program as a means to get re-elected would be out of a job if they dare propose a system that contains accountability of any kind.

calling to tell her right now...

She told me she'd rather have a young, intelligent, forward-thinking man in the White House instead of one who doesn't even use the technology even someone with her modest means is so fortunate to have here in the USA.

Edit: wireless and home are the same.

the next thing you should do is send her copies of the US Constitution and the Communist Manifesto, ask her to read through them, then tell you which system she thinks would be better for her children.

Sounds like an interesting conversation and one that also probably never happened. It is good though, that even as horrible as it is to live in the US after 8 years of Bush, she is able to afford communication devices. She must not watch enough cable to know how bad things are.

forward thinking??

she must hate the idea of this silly apology.

I'll be happy to explain that free meals ain't a part of the American way and isn't why freaking school exists. The education they're not getting is their issue, so maybe you should help explain it and tie lack of one to needing free frickin' meals.

I don't buy that they're not getting medical care, but you're comment implies that medical care should be free to those who can't afford it. Very Nice.

Gangs are after many and very few, on a national basis go there. Thoe who do typically lose. Surely you feel sorry for the rich kid who delves into cocaine at 16.

Maybe I deserve an apology, because I work to provide for my family.

Whining for the plight of individuals will inevitably lead to atrocious decisions, but seems that's not of concern to you as you work at trying to help raise two more wards of the state.

Do you hate poor people? Honestly. Does the sight of them disgust you? Does it make your skin crawl that the only balanced meal a 10-year-old might get all day come from his school lunch?

I don't hate poor people in the least. I would like for the world to be easy for everyone, but it isn't.

The life lesson that it's a tough slog and big bro ain't there to catch you is difficult to learn and equally difficult to teach. Regardless, the lesson has to happen for everyone. Our decades of gov't intervention into lives of poor has done nothing but increase the number of them exponentially. I'm for a different solution.

One that says regardless of who bought the bed, who made the bed or who sleeps in the bed, it's on you to fix your own.

I understand that it sounds harsh, but it's most often the right lesson. We've certainly proven that the gov't assistance route is exactly the wrong lesson.

One that says regardless of who bought the bed, who made the bed or who sleeps in the bed, it's on you to fix your own.

So do you care how they fix it, as long as they fix it?

I mean, injustices were made to put them in the predicament they're in now. If they commit some others on the way to fixing their bed, that's cool, right?

Or should they just play by the rules others wrote?

again, every American can claim injustice in their current predicament. It's not an acceptable excuse for anything any time.
