I know for a fact Maryville and Knoxville were hotbeds for CRACK at colleges not too long ago.Thats why I laugh wen they try to talk about how bad weed is. It's all bad even alcohol but weed is probably less damaging to the body and doesn't mess you up as bad.Myself I use none just throwing out a few facts of interest having 3 college boys.

Most players smoke weed---it's no big deal.

Except that it can land you in prison, can cost you your job (or you place on a sports team), and as in the case of these nitwits, stunts your ability to make good decisions.

As others have said, legalize it, that is fine, but you still will have rules in place that prohibit you from using it in certain areas. There seems to be this belief that if it's legalized, it will be fine for athletes to use it, and that is not going to be the case.

Weed should be legalized and I have no problem with it and I think its a travesty that people are serving time and having their records ruined for something that is harmless and not dangerous. That being said if you are a student-athlete and all you have to do is not smoke weed, and carry guns, it shouldn't be that hard.

You know what is probably most damaging to the body? Rod Wilks.

Quit bashing white people. I'll have you know I smoke pot all the time.

Haha - smoking >>> drinking - no consequences (as long as you just stay inside and "chill") other than being really hungry. I don't have any problem with people lighting it up... what are "laws" anyway?

Legalize it - it's a natural growing freakin' plant (originally atleast) - you probably do about as much damage to your brain cells as you would smacking yourself upside the head semi-hard (I'm sure these Division I and Pro football/basketball players getting knocked up the side of the head with all the contact suffer more as well). Tobacco and alcohol are much more damaging to the body I'm sure.

On the scale of "things that are bad":

Getting caught with a handgun with an altered serial number >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> getting caught with a half ounce of weed

I don't understand why people think weed and booze are not harmful. They both kill brain cells which cannot regenerate. They are physically and psychologically addictive. They both alter thinking and impair judgment. They cost money, create personal problems and kill motivation and drive. Why do it?

Yes, you really should. It also contains more carcinogens than tobacco.don't believe all the propaganda. There are many harmful plants, so just cause its natural doesn't mean its good.

Cannabis smoke contains numerous carcinogens. Surprisingly, an extensive study published in 2006 by Donald Tashkin of the University of California, Los Angeles found that there is no significant link between smoking cannabis and lung cancer. The study, which involved a large population sample (1,200 people with lung, neck, or head cancer, and a matching group of 1,040 without cancer) found no correlation between marijuana smoking and increased lung cancer risk, with the same being true for head and neck cancers as well. The results indicated no correlation between long and short-term cannabis use and cancer, indicating a possible therapeutic effect. Extensive cellular studies and some studies in animal models suggest that THC or cannabidiol has antitumor properties, either by encouraging programmed cell death of genetically damaged cells that can become cancerous, or by restricting the development of the blood supply that feeds tumors, or both.

Fail...

how bad is the dope problem across all campuses. we've had a bunch of basketball players get kicked off because of dope. surely we are not the only school that has this issues. it also seems to be getting worse every year. it must be one heck of a drug to risk your education and possible pro future.

dope problem? You make it sound like these guys are shooting heroine.

As posted above by VKAman, most studies have shown marijuana use is not harmful, but potentially a GOOD thing. I personally believe it should be legalized and taxed in much the same way tobacco and alcohol is. That would equal lots of money for our government who never seems to have enough......

However, until it is legalized, I have ZERO problem whatsoever with athletes getting in trouble for failing drug tests or being busted by police for use/possession.
What you do is your business, not mine (or an entire fanbase's for that matter), but if there are rules and laws prohibiting usage of certain drugs, you must abide by it.
Morality aside, player A fails drug test for pot, player B fails drug test for anabolic steroids; they should face similar (if not same) punishment because BOTH DRUGS ARE PROHIBITED.

I'm not taking sides but I think I would need to see the research and who funded it. And I say the same thing for the other side that says looking at weed kills you.

I personally have a hard time believing anything you smoke doesn't do at least some damage to your lungs.

Now eating the brownies....

Don't know about that because one actually gives a player an unfair advantage and the other is mainly prohibited because it's illegal for whatever reason. I agree that there should be punishment for both, but I wouldn't suggest they be equal...Fraud and marijuana are illegal but a businessman who chooses the first over the second is going to be in a lot more trouble...

This is true, and it does...just doesn't cause emphysema, etc. People blow it way out of proportion just like they say it's "physically addictive" when it is much less so than caffeine.

Brownies are fine, though. :)

the majority of people of that age smoke weed. imo.

Or have at least tried it. I went to college in the early/mid eighties and pot was everywhere. Most I knew survived the experience to become solid law abiding tax paying citizens.

There are car loads of white kids driving around Knoxville and every other campus in America including private Christian colleges smoking dope...the fact that these are high profile black athletes makes it more sensational. The guns with altered serial numbers don't help the situation and image.

UTK is like any other big school when it comes to pot. No one wants a real job so a lot of students sell weed, which obviously makes it extremely easy to get. There's weed everywhere. I don't think there's a "dope" problem though. I'd call it a "dope" problem if everyone was on Oxycontin or falling asleep with a Heroin needle in their arm on the regular.

The reality is that caffeine is more addictive than pot and pot does less damage to the body than alcohol.

You can't blame the culture and you can't blame the "drug". You have to blame the student-athlete. Maybe drug tests for pot aren't the fairest thing when you consider the facts..but they know the rules going in. You can't blame anyone or anything else.

yup. like the comedian once said, there's a reason they call it dope. Why do it, though? Because the counter-culture is attractive, and it feels good. I don't do it, but I haven't forgotten why I used to.
