Man, you can find any number of studies claiming marijuana use won't hurt you and any number saying it will. It comes down to personal choice..myself, I don't think I have ever met anyone who started using any kind of drug whose life got better.

Guess we should round up all the coffee drinkers in America then...

Totally agree! Athletes on scholarship have signed a contract with the university and have agreed to avoid the use of drugs which affects their performance. They should not have agreed to play BB if they weren't going to live up to the contract.

Weed should be legalized and I have no problem with it and I think its a travesty that people are serving time and having their records ruined for something that is harmless and not dangerous. That being said if you are a student-athlete and all you have to do is not smoke weed, and carry guns, it shouldn't be that hard.

X 2.

They F'd up big time so guess what? They're going to get slapped pretty hard for breaking the rules.

This is a repost I wrote in another thread:

Actually, chronic MJ smoking can have a number of harmful effects on the body, most notably on the heart and lungs. The popular notion that MJ smoke is free of carcinogens has been debunked, and the evidence is clear in the medical literature.

Of course, the most common problems caused by THC use are found in the CNS: "Amotivational Syndrome," anxiety, depression, memory impairment, and schizophrenia.

Of course, many people will relay a story of some brilliant friend who scored a 36 on his ACT and now studies at Harvard as "proof" that MJ is safe. But, this is the exception, not the rule. The evidence is very convincing that there are numerous adverse effects. To say that chronic MJ use would not affect an athlete's performance is, quite simply, preposterous.

Can you imagine if this crew had pulled into Pilot? We would have had plenty of football and b-ball scholarships free for next year...

How does chronic MJ use compare with chronic alcohol (on an athletes performance)?

There are really no comparative studies that I know of, largely because the prevalence of MJ use in athletes is unknown. Of course, chronic or heavy alcohol use has its own dangers -- including cardiovascular, GI, neurological and psychiatric effects. It's really a case of apples and oranges.

I am not naive, but this situation makes me sad and disturbed that it is considered a common thing and nothing to be alarmed about by some. What a shame that young people become so accepting of this behavior and don't see the dangers. I know there are many who do not use these drugs and they are the hope for our future. All of us have been exposed to the use of drugs and know it is available but have recognized it as having the potential to ruin our lives. It is all about the choices we make in our life and there are consequences.

Just remember you are reading a board where many brag about drinking and smoking. It is sad but it is their lives and they can do as they please. What is silly is why would they think athletes would be any different.

You do realize that our current President (and other ones) has smoked weed, right...I would argue that they certainly have some impact on our future, especially if you're talking about our future as a country...

wasn't the main push for making weed illegal from Texas,so they could use it as a law to help keep Mexicans on the other side of the boarder? and to help keep touring black bands out of towns?Their is a show on national geographic or a station like that that I seen, been a while since I watched it,but they said that is the reason it is illegal to begin with, sounds like something the government would do

I don't understand why people think weed and booze are not harmful. They both kill brain cells which cannot regenerate. They are physically and psychologically addictive. They both alter thinking and impair judgment. They cost money, create personal problems and kill motivation and drive. Why do it?

They only kill the weak ones. Think of it as Darwinism for your brain. It is actually weeding (no pun intended) out the less desirable brain cells so that the stronger, more virile brain cells can dominate.
