How Did Louisville Get More D Talent Than UT?

AJ is bad in coverage. Not a guy who is going to blow up a blocker and make a tackle either. But if it is third and 4 and the back has ran for 8 yards, AJ will make a tackle. Better at running back than linebacker.

He played out of position ALOT. Most of the guys hesitated because they were unsure... AJ attacked. Go back and watch some games again. You see him constantly getting sucked up in the flow at the LOS. THAT certainly doesn't work in the 3-4... and especially when your DC does as poor of a job of teaching it as Sal did. But it works EXTREMELY well in the 4-3 where the primary task of the DT's is to keep OL's off the MLB.

He is definitely not great in coverage. Again, the 4-3 helps him. Most of his coverage responsibility will be between the hashes.

The talent on our defense is much better than last season indicated. jmho

Nice summary of what we're trying to say.

With Sal, UT's D was last by a pretty wide margin in the SEC. With Wilcox, I think they finish around 5th or 6th. Still not "great" but much better. Sal's results actually could have been much worse. He did not face an O that was nearly as explosive as the Arkansas O from last year. They might have hung a hundred on him.

Another "fun fact" to support the point we're making.

EVERY FBS team UT faced except NCSU scored at or above their season avg against Sal's D... even UK. Most scored significantly above their season avg.

Conversely 7 of the 11 FBS O's Wilcox faced scored under their season pt avg.

REMINDER: This is with almost all '11 contributors returning for Sal... plus some contributors coming in from HS and JUCO.

I'll just throw out this generalization about UT's defensive coaching and talent. Wilcox was a better coach than Sal (obviously) but our defensive talent has always been mediocre. It was mediocre this past year compounded by the horrible coaching. Why do you think Butch is bringing in "speed" guys? It's one of many elements we are lacking on D.

If UT dont practice and use better angles on tackling and have no speed in secondary. We get same results as this year! Just pittful coaching basically what we saw on our defense we got some talent but no speed in secondary.

To me good coaching is the key. I remember when Erk Russell was churning out those "junkyard dawg" D's back in the day with many players no one else was looking at.

By identifying and developing talent better than our staff was able to. Not to mention Strong is a heck of a coach.

You're right, Eric Berry, Al Wilson, etc. were all mediocre.

Our defense may have had more overall talent than they showed on the field, but foot speed is foot speed? When players got into our secondary, they ran away from our guys, because by SEC standards, our defense was slow. Glad Butch is addressing.

Our D isn't where it needs to be from a talent standpoint, but nowhere need as bad as some are insinuating. And if it is that bad, how come all the "scouting gurus" creamed their britches when they committed to us. I'd bet half this thread celebrated when these guys committed to us.

Anyone notice that Driskel, Burton and Gillislee weren't running down the sidelines all night vs. the Cards?

Florida tried only 2 end arounds and bootlegs and got crunched but good.

After a few tries early, Pease realized UL had real closing speed, and UF was left with playing it straight, at which they're not very good.

Speed has no slump, and we ain't got much (do we?) on D.

Initially they didn't. They were just coached up better.

We have D talent. We just don't know how to use it.

We're slow and have some key needs, but we play way below our potential.

Yeah, but to get the kids to go to Louisville, KY! That's saying something.

When you say "Louisville, Kentucky" you are criticizing the city of Louisville, not just UofL. Louisville is in "The 10 Best Cities For Families" (The 10 Best Cities for Families | Summer Travel - Yahoo! Shine) and in the "10 Best Cities for Recreation" (Best Cities 2010: 10 Best Recreational Cities - Parenting.com).

Louisville has some of the good qualities Knoxville has of being a big small-town, but it is a cultural blend of the north, south, east and west that is evident in the food choices in town. Business First names it "one of world’s best food getaway cities" (Louisville named one of world?s best food getaway cities - Louisville - Business First) and Southern Living named it #2 Tastiest Towns (The South's Tastiest Towns - Southern Living).

If you are young you like a nightlife and Louisville certainty has more than many college town such as Gainsville or Knoxville. With Fourth Street Live in the middle of downtown (Fourth Street Live! - Louisville - Reviews of Fourth Street Live! - TripAdvisor) there are good bars, restaurants, theaters and clubs. There is also Bardstown Road in The Highlands that have local bars, restaurants and clubs that run through historic neighborhoods dating back to the Civil War (The Highlands (Louisville) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

If you are looking to get away from the urban areas you don't have to leave the city. Through Louisville there is a band of parks and parkways connecting them designed by Frederick Olmsted (who designed Central Park, Prospect Park, and Biltmore). There is also band of parks that surrounds Louisville that includes 100 miles of biking and canoeing trails.

UofL in the past was more of a commuter school, but that has turned around in the past 10 years. They have been executing a similar plan as UT- updating its 1950/60s campus. The school has been buying the industrial land that surrounded the campus (something UT should do more of) and expanding with modern buildings that young people like (such as this University Center that has been added next to campus that went into an area like Knoxville's strip that has been rundown for awhile: Creating A ‘University Center’ At The Masterson’s Block | Broken Sidewalk and http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...Building,_University_of_Louisville_(1058).jpg).

UofL is also set in the largest Victorian neighborhood in the nation (As the Largest Victorian Neighborhood in the Nation, the South?s Old Louisville Reveals a Medley of Architectural Wonders (Travel Post Monthly)).

With Museum Row students and families can visit 9 museums all close to each other on or near historic Main Street. This includes the Slugger Museum and Muhammad Ali Center.

I hear many people criticize Louisville that either have not actually been to Louisville or have not been in awhile. A lot of Kentucky fans issues with Louisville could be traced to a couple of things: racism- there being a higher population of black people in the city, and urban growth- many from smaller communities are intimidated by a larger city.

And I don't even buy that answer either. You are just grasping now because the numbers completely refute what you are claiming. They were put in positions to fail by their DC's schemes and playcalling. They didn't get coached up.

When UT goes back to a 4-3/two deep base this year, their defensive numbers are going to improve and probably by alot.

Exactly. Their lack of talent will be hidden just like when Wilcox was here. Is that to be cheered?

I think the answer to the OP is simple. Louisville didn't hire a guy with a losing record in the WAC that has horrible in-game decision making skills.

we had a fat guy as a strength and conditioning coach and a Defensive coordinator that was unable to teach his system and call plays for it

To Mayor Tannor from Louisville, I promise I wasn't putting down Louisville as a city. It's a fine place.

My point is getting kids from Florida to go to Louisville. Yes, UT gets a few players from the state of Florida, but not 30 something players.

I'm sure when the kids get there they like. As long as Strong stays there and keeps his connections in FL he should have a steady crop of players from the Sunshine state.
