Pretty sure David Duke was the GOP nominee for governor of Louisiana within the last 15 years. I guess he and all of his supporters have since movd their support to the Democrat side.

It only takes six votes to get a party nomination for the governorship in Louisiana? Man, that has to keep campaign costs down.

I'm still waiting for you to prove your point. I hope you're better than this in the court room.

btw, Duke received 671,000 votes for governor in the 1991 election.

the following year, he tried to run for President and received less than 120 thousand votes nationwide.

Duke started his political career as a democrat, probably hoping to play on the legacy of such titans as J. William Fulbright, Al Gore Sr., George Wallace, and Robert Byrd.

My bank account says I'm very good. My point is proven every time the miniscule portion of minority votes Gotten Old Party gets becomes even smaller. They're seen as the party of mouthbreathing Bible thumpers and bigots. There's a reason for that. It's true. The fact the only portion of the nation where they have any real relevance now is the old Cradle of Segregation isn't a coincidence. It's a product of their alignment with the Bob Jones U crowd.

i'd argue minorities not voting for the GOP has far more to do with income than it has to with race relations. when a larger % of minorities were in the middle to upper class they did vote republican in much higher numbers.

It also has a lot to do with the media's constant granting of credibility to race charlatans like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.

You don't live in the South. It has EVERYTHING to do with the perception that the GOP is home to racial intolerance. You can argue whether the perception is true until you are blue in the face. Doesn't matter and when some idiot state official down here invariably opens his mouth and makes a racially insensitive comment, it just feeds that perception all the more.

the same people who think the GOP is home to racial intolerance are the same people who would never dream voting republican in the first place and i know that sounds like a chicken and egg argument. :)

Actually, I think that's an excellent analogy.

Thing is, it won't be those communities that change that repeating cycle. It will have to be the GOP that does the changing and then sells it. And the reality is that they are just nowhere close to ever doing it.

Not to mention those same people look at the south as having horrible racial problems when racial tensions in their cities and towns are every bit as tenuous and in many cases even worse. The democratic party has played on the African American vote for years and in many ways has relegated them into 21st century slavery.

outside of not agreeing with policies that give handouts to various minority groups i dont' see how the gop has been intolerant. now obviously on the local level you are going to get some wackjobs, but that's a big leap to saying hte gop is seen as the party of racists. it's kind of like saying the democrats are seen as the party of potheads or something.

As LG said, it is about perception, not reality. Of course they are percieved as racists because people like LG spend their days decrying the intolerant Rs.

A parent can cave into their child's every desire but are they really doing a service to their kids by doing this? The same goes for the democrat party regarding minorities. If republicans have to do this to win their vote then I think it best not to have it.

so how does the GOP change this exactly? i very much doubt that anything the gop does will change the tune of the democrats on this subject. the race card is not one they will easily give up. they're already using it in spades to shield obama.

Remember the part where I said the GOP isn't making the change and selling it so as to change the perception?

Well there ya' go.

so the only way to change the perception is to give minorities a bunch of handouts? isn't that racist? i.e. the theory that all minorities ARE looking for a handout?

My post specifically said if republicans have to promise what we know is a great detriment to the black community in order to get their vote it is best not to have it. That has nothing what so ever to do with perception.

What needs to happen is that republicans need to educate the black community exactly what it is that is tearing it apart. Strong work ethic, personal responsibility, etc, these are the things that are tearing them apart and there is a serious lack of all these things present in their communities. It is also becoming more prevalent in communities across America as a whole.
