How good are the sooners?

Yeah they beat bama, but I'm looking for a jimmies and joes breakdown.

Last week, I had a training event for work. I met a guy from my firm's Dallas office who was a sooner alum.

We started chatting about the upcoming season and I said the sooners were primed for a solid year, especially with their young star QB.

He told me to slow it down, that no one watched the QB play throughout the year and what he did against bama was quote "play out of his F---ing mind."

My coworker was afraid OU was overrated.

It made me wonder how good big game bob's crew actually is, and how much of their perception is solely based on "oh my gosh they beat holy Saban."

Thoughts?
The bad news is that he will not have to play out of his "f'n" mind to beat us.

Gotta love this place. When discussing OU, the Bama win is overrated, overhyped, and Bama didn't care.

When discussing Bama, the proof they are on a downward spiral is they lost their last 2 games, including getting whipped by OU.

Truth.

Under Bob Stoops, Oklahoma has basically hung around the top 10 in a mediocre year and played for a national title in a good year.

They win about 10 games a year consistently.

"But, they aren't in the SEC"

Ok. Neither was Oregon.

Oklahoma is a very good team. They are deservedly in the preseason Top 5 for a reason.

Under Bob Stoops they lost a lot of their magic and defensive abilities when Bob's brother left to take over the head coaching job at Arizona. Now he is back in Norman. The defense really didn't click last year but they did get some really big wins. Now the Stoops are back on the same page, and I expect this defense to explode.

The offense should be very well knitted together, and I think Knight has the confidence he should have had before. I expect him to play well. The offense is no slouch either, and neither is this team.

After all they did beat Alabama. And that counts for something.

I am telling you, they will be a very good team. They win 10 games every year and constantly compete for the best teams in their own conference and in the nation. Its not some 'one trick pony'

Depends on the week. Oklahoma got whipped by Texas last year also. I think that was a home game.Stoops is capable of pure pooping.

Texas and Oklahoma always play at a neutral site in Dallas at the old Cotton Bowl Stadium (during the Texas State Fair).

They lost to Texas in Dallas.

The Red River rivalry is about as unpredictable as the Iron Bowl and The Game between Ohio State and Michigan. Their respective records entering the game mean very little upon kickoff.

Bob Stoops has spent the entire off season talking about how weak the SEC is. No way in hell he is going to let a young SEC school sneak in and steal a win. He sees this as a statement game to the playoff committee. Imagine if the playoffs were last year and the final spot was going to either a 1 loss Oregon or a 1 loss UGA. No doubt the committee would look at the common opponent and see UGA escaped while Oregon sailed.

Playing the Sooner's at home in a season where the Vols are having to replace their entire defensive and offensive lines is a monumental challenge. Vol fans tend to forget the Vols are coming off 4 consecutive loosing seasons.

I said it last year with regards to Oregon and I'll say it this year for Oklahoma. THIS is the toughest game on our schedule this year. We have Alabama at home in Knoxville and we are very much more familiar with them.

I would say we have a better chance of beating Bama than beating Oklahoma at their place.

I don't get this line of thinking. So Oklahoma has an excuse to get blown out by their biggest rival, but when UT gets blown out by theirs, it's different? Somebody already mentioned they're a Jekyll and Hyde kinda team and that's spot on.

With the stable of QB's at UT right now, not a chance in hell. Seriously though, why even ask that question? Just for fun? Need some attention? WTH?

I ask because there seems to be some uncertainty with how good their QB actually is so I was using our guys as the measuring stick. That's basically what this whole thread has been about (how good they "really" are) only I asked about a specific player.

The Sooners may in fact be overrated but their team as a whole are talented and more experienced than we are right now. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that we have all the odds stacked against us in this game. And I'm sure, with the open dislike he has shown for the SEC, Stoops will have this game circled and he'll push this to his team as a game for respect. JMO

But can beat Bama

I thought we were talking about this year…Would you pick them to finish ahead of Alabama playing the SEC West schedule? Ahead of LSU? Ole Miss even? I think it's very possible OU would finish no better than 4th in that division this year.

You misread my post. I'm correcting the guy I had quoted. He said Oklahoma lost to Texas in Norman.

I'd almost be willing to bet money that we lose by more points to OK than to AL.

People try to say that they "almost" lost to WVU and that somehow means that this year we "have a pretty good chance" of beating them. But they forget that they thrashed Alabama.

Oklahoma is very very good and good on their home field. Lets also not forget that Stoops has it out for the SEC now. He will want to curb stomp us.

Tennessee is very very not good. Especially on defense. They could easily give up more points than Sal Sunseri's defense did. We dont know Oklahoma like we know Bama and we play Bama in Knoxville.

Oklahoma will be the toughest game we play this year.

Yep.

A better question is, is there a single player on the current Vols roster that could start for Oklahoma at the same position?

A: Maybe Marquez North. Maybe. Depends on if if DGB ends up eligible.

And that tells you all you need to know about how this game will go.

I root for both teams, but when one considers this game realistically, it'll be way ugly.

According to 247 recruiting rankings, Oklahoma's four year recruiting ranking is 13.75, which puts them at #11 overall. The only team they play that has outrecruited them is Texas (four year average ranking of 10 for #9 overall), but Texas just changed coaches. Although Oklahoma is not a top 4 team talent-wise, they will most likely finish there because of their schedule.
