How many games before Crompton becomes The Starter ?

If he wasn't healthy enough, do you really think coaches would have played him?

Crompton wasn't currently injured, but he wasn't a pillar of perfect health for a Major College QB either. Not sure what the "Crompton didn't look good in the O&W Game" is all about.....

Crompton was 15-19 for 102 yards in the Orange and White Game. I'll take that for a guy that was coming off an injury, who has not been throwing a football until about a month and a half before the game, and hadn't played in a real game since November of 04. (Army All America Game doesn't really count as a game for the QB's involved.) Fulmer himself had good things to say coming out of the O&W Game.

I've been really impressed with Jonathan Crompton, considering he hasn't played any football since high school.

He was throwing just fine in the pregames towards the end of last season. I seriously doubt he was having a lot of problems in the O&W game.
huh? Refresh my memory then. I thought he didn't start throwing again until well after the first of the year.

Is this the way you want the leader of your team to talk....

"It was one-on-one Bret Smith and Jonathan Wade and I banked on the fact he would get it done, but J Wade is a good physical player and I forced the ball in," Ainge said

"The little things got us," Ainge said. "We had four fumbled snaps as quarterbacks, interceptions, called several plays wrong, little things like that.

OR.....Do you Want a leader that talks like this.....

"That's my fault," Crompton said of the fumbled snap. "I've got to get better at it. I wasn't clear enough on the snap count. I've got to be more forceful and let him know. It's my fault. I'll take the blame on that."

I recorded him throwing the football in one pregame. I'll dig through my collection and find it if need be.
Unless it was before his surgery? Anyone remember when that was?

Not calling you a liar, but not a chance it was Jon Crompton.

He redshirted, he can't be on the field throwing balls around.

He only went to Notre Dame to get the feeling of a big road game. That was the biggest thing he did all year.

He couldn't even touch a ball until December, and then only a Nerf. He couldn't throw a real ball until late Jan into Feb.

Since arriving last summer, Crompton has spent most of his time on campus rehabilitating from shoulder surgery, and all his efforts have been geared towards this spring and getting a crack at winning the job. He was on the shelf by the time practice began in earnest last August, so this spring will be the first opportunity he's really had to show what he can do.

From Article On March 11-
In his first work inside Neyland Stadium, Jonathan Crompton impressed his offensive coordinator with his poise and play. Crompton scored on a quarterback draw and threw a touchdown pass to Lucas Taylor on a drive. Then Crompton came back in some goal line work and threw three more touchdowns including a fade to Slick Shelley.

From April 8th Article:
Redshirt freshman Jonathan Crompton finished the day 15-19 for 102 yards, working mostly over the middle. After rehabbing from shoulder surgery all fall and winter, he's impressed the coaches with the strides that he's made.

"I've been really impressed with Jon Crompton, considering he hasn't played any football at all since high school," Fulmer said. "For him to get in the huddle and verbalize as well as he has, understand what we're trying to do and to throw the ball with the velocity that he has and the arm strength has been real impressive. David Cutcliffe has been great for all of those guys."

From Article On April 11th:
But at the quarterback position, spring practice was not all about Erik Ainge Jonathan Crompton proved that he is a competitor and has a bright future. Crompton impressed the coaching staff from the first scrimmage on. Crompton certainly was not scared. He played with confidence. The reality is that Crompton was getting to practice for the first time and certainly has work to do, but Crompton improved this spring and showed that in time, he has a chance to be everything fans had hoped when the signed out of high school.

That's fine and all, but were you at the pregame for every game an hour and a half to watch the team warm up? I know what I saw and it was this: A QB going through the drills wearing a number 8 with the name Crompton on the back and all the other QB's were accounted for and were participating as well. So who else would that have been?

I'm charging up the camera battery right now and will try to find the recording of it. Hopefully we'll get to the bottom of it.

Actually Yes I was. I went to everygame except the Alabama game. I would venture that Dylan Dickey was the quarterback you saw, if you saw one throwing in an 8.

Again, not a chance in hell "Crompton" was on the back of any jersey on any field near Tennessee last year.

I'm not trying to be nasty, but I know for a fact that Crompton wasn't touching footballs.

Also, After the S. Carolina game, Rick changed from 16 to 7.

Number 8 was DB Lester Ransom last season. Crompton had not even been assigned the number yet.

Then Dickey had a hell of a nice looking pass. They should have played him instead.

Like I said, I'm waiting for the battery to charge and then I'll look at the video.

just take a deep breath.

Guess What....we are BOTH right....sort of.

I contacted the Cromptons and his dad David told me that one of Jon's friend's, a walk-on wanted to honor him that day, and he wore Jon's number during warm-ups. He said that Jon did not throw a football until he did so with him, in his front yard with the doctor looking on, on 12-23-05 when Jon was home from Christmas Break.

You weren't crazy, and I wasn't wrong. We can both be happy!

Just so you see the conversation.....

GoBigOrange15: I'm having a "discussion" about Jon on VolNation. Someone is trying to tell me that Jon was warming up before a game late last season before the game at Neyland. Says he was on the field in an 8 Jersey, with his name on the back. I think he's crazy. Any help validating my point of view on this? I though Jon couldn't even TOUCH a ball until December and was Jan-Feb before he was "throwing" a real one.
(Name Removed): understand... he was a walkon whos a friend of Jons. He wanted to have number 8 that day to honor Jon... He (Jon) did not throw a ball until 12-23-05 when he came home for christmas and he threw to me in the front yard with the doctor looking on...
GoBigOrange15: Was it Dickey?
(Name Removed): No... I don't remember his name, not Dickey.

Oh, sorry about saying I thought you were crazy. LOL

Ok, but I'm still looking at the video. :victory: Was the walk-on a QB then?

Well at least I know I wasn't seeing things. I was starting to worry..

He didn't say. I hope so, if he was throwing the ball so well, like you said.

Josh Thompson, a QB was listed as a member of the Volunteer Squad last year, maybe it was him.

Back on the Crompton-Ainge situation, here are some comments from those involved tonight...

"We don't have any choice. We've got to see how they're going to play in live situations. We don't have Sisters of the Poor coming in here at all, we've got a really, really good team coming in here. If the quarterback that plays, and it's Erik and I don't want to create anything right now, there's a lot both of them still need to know. But obviously Erik's farther along from a mental standpoint," Fulmer said.

"We need consistent production, even if it's throwing the football away or trying to run for five yards, but just taking care of the ball is the number one factor for us right now, but I don't want them playing scared. I darn sure don't want them playing from the standpoint that they're scared to make a mistake in the passing game. We've just got to play. They're both capable of doing that."

"I thought I had some good plays and I had a couple of bad plays. I had to fix those today and I did. I am just ready to keep on working," Ainge said. "I was very comfortable. I still have a ways to go and we as an offense still have a ways to go, but in terms of being comfortable and knowing what is going on, I am leaps and bounds of where I was last year."

"I think a lot of that is overblown. One was a last play of the game interception. The backed up play was really disappointing. He got tripped up in the endzone and made a terrible decision. I was really upset with that one," Cutcliffe observed of Ainge. "Overall, he managed himself so much better then he has in the past. He is so much more in tune to what he has been in the past. Pocket movement and just playing the game, we need more of that. It was not good. I am anxious to see how we respond to that."

Like I've said before, I'm going to wait until the next scrimmage before I start freaking over the QB position. I'm a little worried now, but if the next scrimmage is more of the same, I'm officially going to freak out.

Ahhhh, the voice of reason. Everybody sip a little moonshine and wait a week before we draw and quarter Ainge. However, if we're posting the same next Monday, then we're going to need some serious pharmacotherapy.

...if that does happen I'm first on the list for something strong.
