We Ended up with a pretty good running attack this year.. 2267yds IIRC... most since '04 or '05...

It can definitely get better, and I think it will, especially with these guys coming in.

I have literally scratched a bare spot in my scalp trying to figure out how some of our folks on Vol Nation are having difficulty understanding having one of the best running backs in the country is a bad thing. Would some of you dingalings feel better if he went to Bammer? Suggesting he's "too big" or "shoulder suspect" and the absolutest lulu of lulus, let's convert him to LB. <smdh>

If he had gone to Bama,Florida or Ohio State, he would have been THE TRANSCENDENT RUNNING BACK THAT BUTCH CAN'T BRING IN!...even though he grew up a Vols fan.

@DonovanJWright: Jalen Hurd impressing everyone with how small he's able to make himself in early leverage drills

Damn.... I don't like my DEs/TEs/OTs making themselves small

I've never understood why tall running backs are so frowned upon. Is it because the can't lower their shoulders and get through the line better or what?

It's not that they can't, it's just more difficult for a taller guy than someone like Maurice Jones-Drew. (5'7)

However, Hurd doesn't have a problem with pad level and he's got great lean when approaching the line. It's part of the reason he's got fans and coaches excited.

He is the best player I've seen in tn hs live since al Wilson at JCM hs in jackson,tn. He made everyone look like jr high players when he played. Who knows what the future brings for Hurd? But my guess is he will do very well. After all, Wilson had a pretty good college and pro career.:clapping:

Thanks vol66. I'll have to go back and look at the numbers. I know at one point we were averaging more yards per carry than any season in the past ten years, I believe. But with the way we struggled at times down the stretch, we may not have sustained that average.

Freak you are correct we gained more yards per carry this season then we have since Heath Shuler was handing the ball off to Charlie Garner.

2013 - 4.9 (More Specifically 4.92)
2012 - 4.7
2011 - 2.8
2010 - 3.5
2009 - 4.3
2008 - 3.6
2007 - 4.2
2006 - 3.7
2005 - 3.5
2004 - 4.7
2003 - 3.9
2002 - 3.8
2001 - 4.1
2000 - 4.1

All stats pulled from here.

This next set of stats do not include "Team" rush yards because the site does not show them and does not provide a total rush yards per carry for years before 2000. The link below shows the stat I am talking about for 2013.
cfbstats.com - 2013 Tennessee Volunteers Rushing

2013 - 5.02 (excluding "Team" rush yards)
1999 - 4.83
1998 - 4.91
1997 - 4.62
1996 - 3.49
1995 - 4.46
1994 - 4.74
1993 - 5.93

That's pretty good considering everybody knew we couldn't throw the ball.

Welp, I'll give it a go Freak.

In terms of the discussion Freak and oregonvol are having...

I don't see us being slow on our "reads", maybe a better term would be slower on the exchange.

.

one thing i get from that video is that the Vols are going to miss Palardy this coming year, big time,I just hate that it took to his Senior year for him to shine

I'm like others,it does seem to take a long time for the Read,Option to develop on a run play

of course I don't know what CBJ and company are trying to do with it,since UTs QB play was so bad last year, hopefully there will be major improvements coming this fall

I just wish this fan base would just stop setting itself up for disappointment, and just let things happen. This kid on paper has potential to be a really great player, so we should just be happy he's going to be in Orange and White (hope not grey). Let him develop if he needs to, and if turns out to be the freak talent that gets tons of yards by just touching the ball great...an added bonus.

The kid didn't play his Sr year, and has had shoulder surgery. Don't care if he's in top shape still gonna have to get the rust knocked off of him. Sitting here, and trying to put pressure on him to be our savior in the run game is just to premature and ridiculous. And why players end up getting bashed if they aren't. Not because they don't try or want to do well, but b/c this fanbase is loco. Sets expectations up to high, and if not met it's not the fans fault but the teenage kids fault. Smh

It just baffles me that people hang there hat on a kid that is jumping from playing his Jr in HS in the TN HS system to The SEC, and are expecting him to be our savior. Just like the people that were so up on Peterman, and he gets thrown out to the wolves by CBJ obviously horribly coached and developed by this coaching staff, and now people bash him as if he's the worse ever.

The Legion of the Miserable would screw up a wet dream.

If his shoulder isn't football damaged too much. Anyone heard how stable his shoulder is after his second surgery? I saw him play in hs and he was the kinda back that only comes around once every ten years.

I think Hurd is going to be a great RB for us but I do feel he would thrive more in a power run offense. I miss seeing the I formation.

I miss it to but I don't see Hurd doing well in the read either. Hope I'm wrong and he's not a Riggs or Houston type bust but I just don't see it.

Derrick Henry proves you can play at that size, he will be SEC FOY.

Tennessee Volunteers 2013 Splits | College Football at Sports-Reference.com

4.9 is good, but that number is for all opponents. Check out the "splits", scroll down to the "conference" split. Also check out the splits by "month" and look at October compared to August and September.

The +6 yards per carry vs. OOC teams really drives up the average for 2013, but we were slightly better vs. the SEC in 2012.

Don't see what and why? Nobody can know for sure, but this kids an elite talent, great feet, great speed, great size. I'll take the other side.... I just don't see him failing.

Jalen gets a rebuilt line and he's entering big boy ball. If he does step up it would be amazing. I still think CBJ is trying to add another 4* RB to help.
