Hurd

Hurd doesn’t belong in the same breath as those 3 Elite backs. They were Elite. Hurd was never Elite. At some point and time over the course of their careers Fulmer put the game on their backs and they willed the Vols to some big time wins. Hurd was never able to accomplish that. Hell I bet Hurd never had a longer run than 25 yards.

I know it is difficult for guys that have never played the game to understand players roles and value. Hurd had a role and added value to a dismal team.

Was Hurd elite? His stats and numbers say he is in the conversation. He also started as a true freshman in the SEC during the worst decade of Tennessee football. Bamawriter says he also had more carries, probably true but he also played in the worst decade of Tennessee football and for bj.

Was Hurd perfect?
Definitely not, he seemed slow at times but again he was getting crushed most plays. Many times he had to brake a tackle in the first couple of steps. Tough to get moving fast when you are breaking tackles that quickly.

Tough? Definitely, tough and size doesen't matter we all know big guys that aren't tough.

Smart? Yes, No, maybe so? At times he seemed to seek out contact instead of gaining yards.

Smart enough to leave bj and possibly improve his situation.

Dumb enough to leave teammates and fans hanging. If he stayed or atleast didn't quit in the middle of a game then he would have wanted for nothing in Knoxville. Jobs, respect and free beers would have been his for life.

I don't hold him up to be a hero but he was the man in the ring and dosen't deserve undo criticism.

Was Ricky Williams elite? He didn't want to be a running back.

Ricky Williams won the Heisman.

And to answer your othe post, I never said Hurd didn’t have a major role on the team. He did. I just think when you throw around names like Jamal Lewis, Henry, Stephens or Cobb that Hurd isn’t in their category. We all saw what happened when Kamara got the start versus aTm. I respect a lot of what Hurd did, but at the same time he had some major flaws as well.

Different olines in the atm game and Hurds first year. Also, that was one game...Alvin obviously fit the scheme better than Hurd but to say Hurd was bad is a lack of judgement. Marlin Lane was not a good back..

The true failure is that thry were not used together for a successful tandem. Thanks bj!

Travis Henry Jamal Lewis Travis Stephens I guess those guys weren’t elite either since he was gonna break every one of their records

This post here tells me you never really watched Henry, Lewis or Stephens play. If you had, you would never have made this post. Hurd is way behind those guys. He is also way behind guys like Webb, Cobb and Garner.

Ah the old tired, well its hard for those who havent played schtick. Just stop. You dont have to play football to realize blantantly obvious thungs. Hurd was a big RB who was strong. He was a decent receiver out if the backfield and a good blocker. But elite? No he was not. He lacked elite, straight line as well as breakaway speed. His vision was average. All you have to do is watch film of guys like Henry, Stephens, Lewis, Garner and others to see the glaring differences.

Yes, Hurd played under much worse circumstances. But consider another huge point. He also played with the best running QB in Vols history, Josh Dobbs. That changes a lot about how the defense plays and focuses on a player.

This Hurd argument is tired. The guy was a very good RB, but not elite by any means. There is absolutely no shame in that. Here is something to ask yourself, name the last RB that would be considered elite, that changed postions in college.

Are you some sorta sage or soothsayer? See into the past? Look into the future and tell me how this season goes.

In 1983 Johnnie Jones rushed for 234 yards on 41 attempts vs Rutgers. Later that same year he rushed for 248 yards against Vandy. 83' season 1,116 yards on 191 carries averaging 5.8 YPC. Second only to Bo Jackson with 1213. That's elite.

Travis Henry,Tennessee’s career leading rusher had just two carries for four yards his freshman season.
He became the Vols’ career leader in rushing yards essentially in just three seasons as well. Henry got his 3,078 yards on just 556 career carries, giving him an average of 5.6 yards per attempt. Travis Henry wasn’t Tennessee’s feature back for most of his career, splitting time with Travis Stephens and Jamal Lewis, That's elite.

My memory is fading but I seem to recall Henry carrying the ball on 11 or 12 consecutive downs to ice a game against Alabama.

I'm not sure any of today's players have the heart to lay it on the line like some of the greats in the past.

Lastly I have no grudge against Hurd and I'm sure he'll get an NFL check this draft season. Only time will tell how long he sticks in the league. Anyone who watched any of the Baylor game would realize he was not their featured player.

not sure I follow?
Referring to the post you bumped. Pretty clear Hurd sees better NFL opportunities for himself at WR than RB. Doesn't mean he wasn't/isn't a capable collegiate RB.

Iirc, he's top 10 all time leading rusher at UT. Guess VOLS are worst off than I imagined.

1000% wish Hurd was on this team. He’d be the clear starter.

Wish him well at Baylor, looks much more natural at his current weight.

If the numbers I’m using are right Jalen Hurd had 589 rushing attempts at UT. 277 of them were in his sophomore year. He finished with 2,635 yards in his “3 years” here.

Putting that in perspective Hurd had 33 more rushing attempts than Henry, and at the same time Henry had 443 more rushing yards than Hurd.

So this has got me to thinking, if you could put Hurd behind the offense the Henry played with.. How would you think Hurd would have performed.. Not just Henry's Oline.. But play calling etc.. 🤔
