Hurd

So this has got me to thinking, if you could put Hurd behind the offense the Henry played with.. How would you think Hurd would have performed.. Not just Henry's Oline.. But play calling etc.. 🤔

Worst. Jalen was the main guy when he was here, those 277 attempts his sophomore year would have never happened if he was sharing snaps with Travis Stephens and Jamal Lewis.
The amount of attempts Hurd had here inflates his rushing total. Man was good definitely not elite.

If Butch knew how to actually rotate between AK and Hurd his numbers would of reflected that, but instead Hurds numbers are inflated and Kamara’s suffered.

I'm meaning just snap for snap swap.. Behind the players that Henry vs the players Hurd had.. And the OC Henry had... If that makes sense...

Jones offense set Hurd up for failure.. The Iowa game comes to mind.. Hurd complained about getting hit behind the line of scrimmage prior to the game related to the type of run plays being run.. DeBord made adjustments for Hurd for the bowl game.. He did really well.. But next season.. They went back to what they was running previously.. So I'm trying to imagine Hurd running behind a team like Henry had and the offensive scheme that was used... Not comparing backs, just thinking how Hurd might have performed.. Just a curious question we will never know the answer to..

Hurd has nowhere near the talent of the other backs listed, but he was very tough. I give him that all day, and he was a good SEC back. Give him that too. He would have been drafted at RB had he stayed here.

Your argument is the only 1 that holds water for Hurd. I played ball all the way thru school, and understand it well. Hurd was tall, and accelerated slowly, but with all his size, could have been a battering ram if used properly. In the I formation, or any set that have Hurd a 5 yard running start to hit a hole, he would have flat run over LBs, and if he broke a tackle could have had big gains, he was very fast once up to speed, as 6ft4inch guys often are. He was terribly utilized in CBJz offense where he had to stand still, 2 yards back, and wait for a QB to decide whether to keep it or hand it off.

CBJ should have used Hurd in the I formation, or even running out of shotgun, so he had time to gain speed before hittimg the LOS. He could have used Kamara for the up close RPO plays, since he was so quick and could accelerate in a hurry. Both could have had 20 carries a game, Hurd probably still gets the same yards he got 3 at a time over 30 carries, Kamara would have been a great change of pace, we would have controlled the clock, and won more games.

Hurds failure lies on CBJ...him quitting in the middle of a game on an undefeated team makes him a quitter, and he will never shake that, especially in Tennessee. Oh, well. Better coaches now, and i dont think Hurd would even start on this team , if he did then he wiuld split carries with Jordan , Chandler, and Banks...who will be a beast. You can bet that if Hurd were here, he would be used in the I formation, since we have a coach that understands football now. Amen

12 catches for 194 yds through 2 games for Baylor.

I’ve been as hard on him as anybody for leaving Tennessee the way he did, but maybe it’s time to be happy for the kid that he is finally getting to showcase his ability - and on that ability - I was also wrong about that. He can flat out play. Make no mistake, he was wrong to quit the team in the middle of the season. But college kids who can’t see the big picture of life do dumb things in the moment. I know because I was one once. What say you Volnation? I for one hope he stays healthy and balls out this year and can look forward to a productive NFL career

I too wish him the best and hope he balls out in the pros some day. He was dealt a bad hand by the former football salesman.

I get that Hurd quit (it was a big deal), but don’t act like he wasn’t a great player for us and didn’t give his all before the debacle at UGA. He actually carried our team for a couple years before the team talent improved. He took some major licks to do that. But to act like Hurd was not a good running back is very misguided. He almost beat the all-time rushing record at Tennessee.

I hate that he quit on us halfway through the season and he will always pay for that with his legacy here. But I wish him well.

Hurd is a great player and I wish he would have seen his career out at UT. I’m not going to hold him leaving against him. You idiots claiming how awful he is for quitting mid season should hate our entire team minus the new freshman because they all rolled over. At least Hurd admitted why he did it.

Catching the ball was what Hurd did best here. Not much of a running back, not surprised he can be a good WR especially with his size. Has excellent hands.

"Not much of a running back?" What world are you living in, dude? Hurd is number 6 on our all-time-rushing-leader list...ahead of Cedric Houston, Jay Graham, and Mondario Hardesty...and 441 yards behind Cheese, our all-time leader. Hurd most certainly would have become our all-time rushing leader had he stayed. He was a MULE for us while he was here. Nobody ran harder for us, especially considering he was rarely in the power-I that best suited him. Like everyone else, I don't think much of his decision to quit on his team...but that has nothing to do whatsoever with what he accomplished here. We can't take that away from him and shouldn't try.

Hurd was one of the best backs catching out of the backfield I’ve seen. I think that’s why he’s excelling at WR.

I wonder if he’d had then privilege of running behind a solid O-line and a power focused running game if we’d be saying he was one of the best ever.

Butch basically got him killed and likely cost him years off his career.

Just watch the way both Henry and Hurd run, you will see the clear difference. Hurd is slower, less explosive, weaker and just nowhere near as gifted. Hurd was good but never approached elite.

Would Hurd have been better in Alabama? Yes he would have. Just likely never to reach the heights Henry did.

Have you compared their 40 yard dash and shuttle run times.... Hurd is faster. Uh?

Back to my previous points.
1. If you haven't played the game its hard to understand.
2. The players around you matter... difficult to be fast when you are constantly breaking tackles.

Travis Henry rushed for 443 more yards than Hurd on 33 less carries. Cedric Houston rushed for one less yard than Hurd on 88 less carries. Graham rushed for 26 yards less than Hurd on 49 less carries. Hurd couldn't sniff any one of their jock straps. All of those guys were just as productive, or more productive, than Hurd with far fewer touches.

Hurd's numbers were purely a function of the volume of carries he received, and he received that large number of carries because our head coach was an idiot and didn't realize he had a future NFL OROY on the roster at the same time. His last year, before he quit, was abysmal (3.7 YPC). He was not a great RB.

Ah, another hater who won't give credit where it's due. I really tried to see and respect your point but I just can't. Because it is completely absurd to argue that kind of irrelevant, hair-splitting nonsense. Different runners, different schemes, different times, etc., etc. Hurd's numbers don't lie and yours don't matter. He did what his coaches asked him to do until he chose to not do it anymore...and it is a provable fact that he was pretty good at it...at least according to the UT record books.

I still can't understand why we did not adopt a fullback set using Kamara and Hurd instead of the QB read option? One of those unsolved mysteries.

Because Butch is not a real football coach. Seriously. Relative to peers, he has very little understanding of football strategy and tactics. He was a recruiter. Having him as a head coach was like letting the manager of the local Navy Recruiting office draft up some battle plan.

Overall Butch got better results than Dooley, and is probably a better head coach than Dooley, but Dooley might have actually been a better tactician than him. Butch was able to take the team from 5 to 9 wins purely because he attracted more talent than Dooley. Now, Butch misused that talent, and he recruited a number of really talented guys that didn't fit scheme-wise with what he was trying to do, but he simply brought in a lot more of it than Dooley did.

You get to hire one guy to build widgets. Do you take

A) The guy who builds 20 widgets every hour
or
B) The guy who builds 30 widgets every 2 hours?

After all, B is building more widgets.

Is the guy building your widgets supervised by Butch Jones?

If so, guessing that guy is being held back by general dumbassery/incompetence

I never wished him or any other former Vol any ill will. It's good to see him being successful down there at Baylor.
