Hurricane Florence

This thing is now looking to stall outside of Wilmington and make a SW turn somewhere between Charleston and Myrtle Beach. From a very selfish standpoint this is extremely bad for me and the wife. This place will be wrecked if we’re on the North side of this storm. The storm surge is already predicted at 6-9 feet and will only get worse if it comes this way. I don’t wish anything bad for anyone, but we as family could really use a break right now. I’m sure many others could as well. Hitting the road in the morning . Getting the hell out of dodge, although I really want to see this thing.

understand your dilemma - hoping for the best for all.

They're talking about flooding on Hatteras Island already from Florence and it's nowhere near the shore yet. The southwestern turn could prove to be more impactful for weather in east TN. I think you'd rather see this thing on tv rather than in person.

I agree, it ain't looking good for really Wilmington, Myrtle, and Georgetown. Hopefully, it dosen't gain anymore speed. The area has seen cat 3's and will flood and stuff will fly but it won't be too awful. Anything stronger and the area could be in real trouble. A few things yall may or may not realize about the area.

1. Most of the area was built on swamp. Water doesn't really drain, nor have any where to go fast.
2. The insurance coverages in these areas are a mess, typically expensive and don't cover much. For example, you basically need 3 separate policies home owners policy, flood policy and wind and hail policy.

A 1,000 sq. foot townhouse will cost twice as much to insure, with less coverage than 3,000 sq. foot house in Tn.

All that to say, I hope people are able fix or rebuild again after the storm. The daggum insurance companies steal your money and don't pay for much of anything. I am praying that I am wrong.

My company is battening down the hatches at our Charleston location. If anyone is in the path of the storm, please use precaution and get out now! It's not worth your life. This one is going to be mega-destructive.

There have been horrible storms since the beginning of man, probably before it. No need to politicize it. There wasn’t a hurricane that made landfall on the US mainland for a long time, nearly a decade, not too long ago. I don’t think we are creating more violent storms, we just have the ability to recognize them moreso than we did in the past. That goes for tornadoes and other violent events .

You're free to think what you want, so am I. And stop lying, I didn't even mention politics. We're all responsible for the gross disrespect for the Earth no matter what country, ethnics group, or other affiliation we belong to. Seems you politicized yourself. Perhaps you hypersensitive to certain words related to climate. Do your own thinking and stop trying to make me an extension of your thinking.

It is a very eerie feeling just before a hurricane.
There's something intimidating and ominous about just looking at one on satellite or radar, especially in the hours before landfall. That huge rotating mass of clouds with a little hole in the middle of it just looks like a monster. Like this picture of Andrew in 1992:

I rode out Andrew cowering under the stairs of our townhouse. It's nothing I care to do again.

Current model has the storm slowing down and shifting south right as it comes onshore. Forecasted rain totals are unbelievable. 30-40" around the southern NC coast.
