Hurricane Florence

Guess I should've gone the bham route.

You really should have. I live in NC, with family in SC, so we are all actively watching this storm. Understanding the importance of each map is of priority rather than your playing of games.

Was watching the news, the anchor goes live with a crew talking to hurricane hunters flying in the eye in a G4 aircraft.
Wasn’t a G4 idiot, it was a P3. It was clearly a prop plane with inverted engines.

Whoever is in your ear (the other idiot) telling you what to say needs to get their info right.

It might have been stock footage. If memory serves, NOAA has a Gulfstream they use in hurricane recon.

I'm starting to see folks on the internet starting to doubt the severity of the hurricane all because it has slowly weakened. I just want to say that this is not a storm that should be taken lightly. Yes, there's been some weakening but:

1. The wind field in the storm is getting larger and the storm surge potential is increasing as well due to that. The worst part is that it will be slow moving.

2. There is still plenty of time for it to strengthen before it makes landfall.

One thing is the category label just measures wind speed, which is only one danger of the storms. You still have the flooding, storm surge etc.

However, I have seen the media sensationalize this storm, like they do most things. Language like storm of a lifetime, nothing like this ever seen before. Sure, it's a big storm and has potential dangers but don't blow it up just for ratings. The next hurricane to make landfall will be the next storm of a lifetime. I wish they would quit this stuff. When they always crying that the sky is falling and it's the end of civilization as we know it because of this or that, most people just start ignoring it.

Yes it's a hurricane, it's dangerous and big, people should seek high ground and safe shelter.

One thing I'm noticing is that the Hurricane appears to be riding north of the NHC's official track.

Local government is telling us to check our 100-year flood plain and be ready for major flooding here in SW Virginia. We had major flash flooding late last night already.

If it runs north of the track things will get real hairy real fast here.

Joaquin, whenever that was, got majorly sensationalized, too. The more the news media cries wolf the less people pay attention.

That is one side of the coin. The other side is if the media doesn't heavily emphasize the dangers of hurricanes and other natural disasters, people will less inclined to take action and more lives can be as risk.

I think there is a way to balance it without, as HuntinVol said, acting like every landfalling hurricane is apocalyptic.

In less than 24 hours the storm has dropped to a category 2 with 110 mph winds. It might drop to a category 1 before it hits land.

Starting to see some signs that there could be strengthening tomorrow. The Hurricane is looking healthier than it did earlier.

I thought it would get stronger as it made it into the warmer waters closer to the coast, I guess not. It would seem something is causing it to diminish.

There's been some wind shear that has been cutting into the southern portion of the hurricane, make it look disconfigured and degrading. However, the shear is starting to get weaker now, and the Hurricane is looking better now. It's getting ready to enter the Gulf stream, which can strengthen it.

The hurricane has now stopped weakening. Still think we will see a little bit of strengthening tomorrow.

This hurricane will rival Harvey in terms of possible flooding. Winds may not be as strong, but when it stalls that's going to be the real damaging part to this storm.

I hope people were able to get much further inland for this.

Yep.

My family in Charleston has mentioned that the weather people are loving turn it took yesterday. It's it time to get more air time!

I don't know if I buy the weakening as permanent. people have been calling for it to get weaker before getting stronger again.

I think there have been about 20 "storms of a lifetime" in the last 10 years are so. How many of them were truly catastrophic storms that the people who experienced it will remember like it was yesterday forever...perhaps 2 (Katrina and Harvey)?

And yes, there's way too much emphasis in the coverage on category and wind speed. The biggest killer in hurricanes, even ones that come onshore with stronger winds than Florence, is storm surge/flooding. Harvey didn't even directly hit Houston, actually didn't even come all that close to directly hitting Houston, and absolutely devastated it with the flooding.
