Hurricane Irma

You still have no power?

Nope. Neighbors just told us the trees were still over the lines down the road. I do understand the workers have their hands full though. I'm just thankful we're okay, and didn't get any house damage.

Traveling to Destin. From I75 in Lenoir City, TN to Dalton, GA we've seen countless Florida plates.

I saw that POTUS is going to Bonita Springs today and then I saw how the Imperial River flooded Old 41. I wonder what happened to the panthers and giant gators they had at the Everglades Wonder Gardens?

We live in a rural area and our power would go out all the time. I got a generator and now our power never goes out. Moral of the story, buy a generator and your power will never go out.

Haha. I told my wife we need to get one.

Experienced the same thing today. We prepared but thought I might swing by Publix, hearing they were open, to maybe grab a sandwich or something.

Felt like a scene out of a war zone. Target was the same way, smell was awful from all the rotting food.

Side note, nice area over there. Had several friends who grew up in Whiskey Creek, how was the flooding?

No flooding, many of the docks were underwater due to the slight surge plus high tides - but no real water above that. My kids are trying drag Snook out of Whiskey Creek every afternoon.

Good to hear you're okay, man. It's crazy to talk about being lucky in the midst of all that damage, but I get it. Hope you get power at home a lot sooner than you expect.

It was - how'd you guys fare up in CW? I still can't get over how 100 year old Oaks were snapped like toothpicks.

I'm not 100% sure I don't have a gator in the bottom of my pool right now. For perspective, there should be about a 15 foot swath of finely manicured Floratam behind my pool cage.

Also - don't sink your kayaks and then think that you can simply lift them out of the water. Physics and 44 years of body neglect have left me struggling to pull these things out.

My power used to do the same, bought a generator about 5 years ago. I believe it's been off twice since then and not for long. I am a believer.

Looks like your cage survived.

It did survive, I think I'll get out of this for about a grand - which is cheap considering my home windstorm deductible was north of $7k .

Is that the Mucky Duck on your avatar? Love that place, reminds me that I need take my wife to dinner over there.

Yes. It's an old t-shirt. I put it on this week partly in solidarity with storm victims are partly for the duck pulling a truck thing last season with UF.

I'm actually a little south of CW in Sarasota/Bradenton. The area certainly fared better than Fort Myers, but Sarasota has been dealing with a lot of lingering power outages. A couple of big oaks uprooted in the area but not too bad overall. Our house lost a bit of the fascia but we should be able to repair it ourselves. We have 3 large royal palms out front I was concerned about but they were real troopers. Several fronds snapped off but they held strong. We're just really thankful it wasn't any worse. I realize it was at the expense of others but she helped us by tracking further east after landfall.

And I complain about our deductible, that's steep.

 Sorry for the troubles you've had, but this post is hilarious!

If you have power, get an air compressor or shop vac(run it in reverse) and fill it full of air from the underneath. Should force the water out of it.

Wonder Gardens got hit hard. Half their trees down and the giant sign broke in half with one half being across the street. Haven't heard anything about the animals yet.

Made it to Marco today to check on a couple job sites down there.

Talk about looking like a bomb went off... will be a long recovery for those people.

Basic Hurricane Insurance, which is wind only, is 2% deductible. Now add flood insurance and it's deductible.

Brilliant, it's actually a sit on top with two hatches where the cavity is completely filled. It's basically a plastic shell filled with water where the only outlet is those two swing open hatches.

I think I could get that to work though...

I wouldn't see why it wouldn't work. personally I would open the front hatch, get some air in there, push down so the air goes towards the back and let the air do the work. If nothing else it will make it a little lighter. I can't imagine how heavy that thing is. I've got a sea ghost 130 and it's heavy by itself.

Dunno if it will actually work or not, but in my head it sounds good, but so has a lot of things that I probably should have just kept on holding my own beer instead of handing it to someone else....

My neighbor is from Sarasota, said her family fared well during the storm.
