I Created a CFB Ranking System

I actually agree with your rankings on the top 4.

I wasn't sure whether to bother posting it this year, but after 5 weeks my system was spitting out some funny stuff. Maybe some folks will be amused.

I have had a system since 2006, and I also have UCF at No. 1. They're looking very solid, but part of their ranking is because of the games they've missed. Bama is just now in my Top 10, because they received no return on the FSU win until Saturday.

My system has had the four playoff teams ranked inside the Top 4 each year of the playoffs and last year had them in order, 1-4, for the first time.

Bama was #7 in mine last week, but they were helped by FSU, Fresno, and CSU all winning. UCF's score is fool's gold at the moment because of their limited resume. Interestingly, the other 3-0 team aside from UCF and Miami is UTSA, and they're down at 54th.

90. Ole Miss (2-2) - 95.4575
119. Missouri (1-3) - 62.4650

That would mean there are 65 teams worse than Tennessee. I find that hard to believe.

Do you have one for march madness also? If so, how have you done? I made an algorithm in undergrad and won a few brackets with it.

Disclaimer: I didnt read all 11 so if you already mentioned it, my bad.

What is the SOS adjustment for teams like those above, especially UCF? I mean, they are whalloping teams by large margins, but they aren't exactly tough competition.

What is the SOS adjustment for teams like those above, especially UCF? I mean, they are whalloping teams by large margins, but they aren't exactly tough competition.

Keep in mind, my S.O.S. figure is based solely on wins/losses and point differential.

So a team like UCF has a decent SOS. They are currently ranked 56th in that measure. However, last week was way higher because they had only played 3 opponents, and those three opponents were unbeaten outside of their losses to UCF. That's no longer the case, obviously.

As for rest of your list:

Miami's SOS = 88th
SDSU = 93rd
Houston = 48th
Iowa = 10th (Iowa's only opponent below .500 is 2-3 Illinois.)
Navy = 112th

Obviously, teams like SDSU and Navy would be ranked higher overall if they had played better teams. South Florida is 5-0, but they are ranked at 29th (behind 3-2 Miss St) because they have the 129th SOS. USF's best win is 3-3 Temple.

Ok, so your SOS factor to be attributed to a given game is simply the W/L percentage of that other team, and does not include any objective or subjective measure of that?

Yep.

The whole point of the exercise is to point out the flaws that are innate to computer or math systems. There is always hand-wringing over polls and the CFP committee, but any human-based system is far superior to any math-based system.

I guess the theory is that, over the course of a ten + game season the qualitative differences have a way of evening themselves out. We know, for example, that UCF is not really the #1 team, even if the math says they are right now because their schedule has been so weak. And you assume that they will at some point have that reflected in their position based on variance reducing over the course of a season.

Interestingly, however, in their case they really only have two decent opponents coming up, Navy and USF. Good, but by no means super strong, relative to what the power 5 teams have left .

Correct. In fact, there is almost no way that UCF will remain at the top next week even if they destroy ECU, as that would tack a 1-6 opponent onto their SOS.
