You are wrong in thinking that making the jump from Florida to Notre Dame is exactly the same as making the jump from Utah to Florida or perhaps Cincinnati to Notre Dame.
The Irish didn't knock down Meyer's door because they're too arrogant to go crawling back to a coach who turned them down once already.
As far as the low buyout goes, Florida is in a position to attract a top flight coach and pay him the going rate without having to shell out millions to a guy who decided to jump ship. This will be the case long after Meyer is gone. A huge buyout shackles the university's ability to pay the next guy. Contract buyouts protect both parties, not just the coach.
I agree with the premise that Notre Dame has an illusion that it is above everyone else. That's partly my point - they won't tarnish the golden dome with recruiting questionable characters even though they might be exceptional athletes.
And for the record, I don't nor have I thought that jumping from FL to Notre Dame is the same as Cinci to ND or the like. If I were the coach at FL, now way would I leave for ND. BUT Urban has clearly stated on several occasions that ND was his dream job. One of his last statements was to the effect that maybe someday (when the kids were older) he might get to coach there.
I'm saying I don't think that ND would offer him based on some of the more shady things that have happened during his tenure at FL. Maybe they wouldn't offer b/c he turned them down once. His reason then was he didn't want to recruit nationally. Lets face it, you can throw a rock from Gainesville and hit some pretty decent football players...
I personally like short commutes to work...
