I know this might be unpopular…

My biggest concern with the pitching staff is they let their pitchers throw a lot of pitches before they bring in a reliever.. Their arms are still young and 120 pitches are a lot. I do uotknow how many pitches they throw through the week but I am sure they throw some.
The Japanese have high school kids throwing 500 pitches a week and they get hurt less often than our adults do throwing 80 every 5 days.

Admittedly, I didn't like bringing in Russell on a cool night coming off arm injury.

His temper is also becoming more and more of an issue.

However, prior to this year, he found teaching methods that produced many strikes.

Overall, I think he a good coach. Not CTV elite level, but a strong assistant.
If anything, Frank and Tony have both cooled down a lot temper wise the last couple of years

Anderson won't be a fit for every prospect but he's certainly elite.

Agreed. Plus that umpire was squeezing Causey horribly bad on the evening that CFA got tossed. I saw that coming a mile away. I knew he was going to give the ump a few choice words during the mound visit. Justifiably so IMHO as I’d love to see the Pitch Track stats for that game.

Maybe he’s better with the lower velocity crafty pitchers than the guys who come in with great stuff and high velocity?

That was addressed…did you not say what I just quoted..did I enter the Twilight Zone?
You seem to be thinking I said he’s been bad with EVERY high velocity guy. I said “better” with low velocity guys. I also said maybe.

There are some examples I cited that are concerning. Citing others he’s done well with doesn’t make them go away. Again, he’s good. I’m questioning if he’s really great…because of the concerning examples I listed.

It is hard to keep my mouth shut when it comes to stuff like this. It’s almost like you have not been around team sports or baseball at all. Do you understand how delusional most parents are when it comes to their children. This happens in youth sports, high school, college, hell it even happens at the pro level these days. I sat next to a parent on the 2022 team who’s kid is now playing pro ball and they did not know why their child was being used the way he was and they were asking scouts questions that anybody with firm baseball knowledge could have answered. The parents are blindly wanting great things for their children and some are not even paying to attention to team goals as some are flat out chasing the money. This is the era of baseball we are in. That parent and another parent were then all consumed with winning it all in Omaha and even I said you know it would be great to win the Sec as we had not done that since 1995. Baseball is already a hard sport. If you think it always kumbaya between players, families, coaches then you are out of your mind. Speaking to a parent or two could net you far different results on how they feel coaches and players are. Tony and Frank have to do what is best for the team as they deem fit at all times. Finding a parent or two that is not happy with this wouldnt be very hard on any team and at any level. As nobody has ever heard any widespread criticism of Frank Anderson, who would you suggest we get to replace him as he is one of the best in the sport. Our pitching staff lost two juggernaut starters and we are still right where we want to be. As for delusional parents at the highest level…look no further than Lebron James and Deion Sanders.

You're right about the parents but when you have the amount of talent that Tony has recruited, really good kids are going to be under used or ignored. And they have.

Yep and it’s happening at every good college in America and every professional baseball team as well. It is called life. Everybody is not going to make the cut. It is crowded for playing time at elite places. I have seen every kid get an opportunity though, albeit some less than others. Nature of the business and the business is booming in Knoxville. Rather ruffle feathers of not playing or being used correctly than go back to Raleigh ball.

It's not about making the cut. Coaches make mistakes. Ours aren't immune.

We can all debate on whether we would manage situations differently as mistakes can always be made there. I just can not recollect a player in lineup and somebody sitting on the bench that should be playing over them. Trying to rack my brain here…

That's because you don't want to. Just off the top of my head....

Sean Hunley would have been in the starting rotation on just about any other team. He's already a starting pitcher at AAA.

Chase Silseth is in the show. Got there before anybody that was starting here.

I think Burns got moved to the pen because he was getting rocked as a starter and walked a lot of batters. He was a big help out of the pen and his ego made him go to greener grass so to speak! He will have a good year at Wake !

Thought we needed Hunley in his role and was best fit for team purposes. He is one of my favorite baseball Vols. I don’t think if he or his parents thought differently his brother would be on team with same coaching staff. As for Chase, sorry he didn’t stick it out. Very few are going to come right in and factor in as freshman and he was getting his chances. Great that it worked out for him but he had worse stats at Arizona two years after he was with the Vols. Not sure what you think we would have done with that.

Again, just saying, kids and their parents that think their kids aren't in the right role are sometimes justified. I've even heard Tony say that he under utilized Hunley.

cycle that never ends for sure…endless debate…in every job ever…individuals have to do what they feel is best for them…management has to do what they feel is best for the organization

Interesting read. Koshien is the best tournament in baseball, even better than NCAA Tournament/CWS in my opinion. If you can ever find streams of it, it’s worth following. I like Japanese baseball a lot, big proponent for it.

But you’ll have to be awake at 5-6am for all of their games lol

Then this should sell you on it

Ohtani got discovered in the Koshien tournament. The year he played was also my first year watching it by pure coincidence, but I admit I didn’t start following ohtani until a couple years into him playing for Hokkaido in the NPB.

Burns is on record saying that he preferred starting over the bullpen. It’s likely most pitchers do. I suspect that played a major role in his transfer.
But that was the best coaching move TV made last year...Burns was terrible in SEC play, so Lindsey got the Friday start and Burns went to the bullpen...Burns coming out of the bullpen not only close the door, but shut it pretty damn tight...His relieving efforts was one of the main reasons we went to Omaha...
