I support Rick Barnes

Bruce Pearl says hi.

Barnes has brought a lot of success to our program, but when it matters most it’s pretty much a given his team is going to falter to a lower seed. The guy hasn’t coached beyond a Sweet Sixteen game in 13 YEARS and he achieved the SS exactly ONCE over that same time span.

Boy that aged well.

At the end of the day, Barnes isn't the one that went 2-18 from 3. That's on the players. They have to make the shots.

While I fully support Barnes and would hate to see us do something as stupid as push him out, this is a terrible argument, in fact it’s the same argument used in wanting to keep Dooley, Butch, and even Pruitt.

Coaches don’t make plays, if we use this logic no coach should ever be fired, they don’t miss TD passes, they aren’t missing blocks, they aren’t getting beat deep.

Barnes and his staff called the plays and the style of offense they ran against Mich to get them open shots. He can't shoot it for them. As stated above, the players are the ones that didn't execute. They didn't miss all those 3's on purpose but they were just not falling when it mattered. Was not a normal shooting game for them. Loss not on the coaches. Those who want to blame Barnes just looking for an excuse to blame someone.

This team finished 1 game short of where the NCAA tourney seeding indicated it would likely end. In the final game, a 7’1” dude made half hIs season worth of 3 pointers, more than our entire team. Flukes happen. Big picture, not a huge deal. The last game does not erase 27 wins including 2 vs UK, and the 1st SEC tourney champ in forever.

The coaches & players all represented UT with class. We got to watch a great PG. Close to 20 guys all played & coached for each other. The program is currently in great hands.

And assuming Barnes returns, he is still writing his NCAA tourney history. What he does there in the future isn’t limited by the past.

Barnes is doing a great job, only one team wins the Tourney each year. A lot of luck and depth win it. We had the depth just didn’t put them away , couple late turnovers killed us. All the teams at this point are good.

I am highly upset and disappointed about Saturday as you can see by my rants on here but Rick Barnes does not need to go anywhere.

Did we underachieve in the tournament that mattered? Yes. However, he got us to that tournament at a 3 seed so we need to keep that in mind.

I'm going to wait and see how his recruiting goes for this Fall. We have BJ coming in, but he and his staff need to get busy. We need guys that can play now NOT sit on the bench in wait.

You realize Mears played 1 NCAA game with Ernie & Bernie? Probably not.

You realized the first round in those days paired the SEC champion Tennessee vs Big East Champion Syracuse? Probably not.

There were no Longwoods in the NCAA then. But you didn’t know that either.
Forty teams total.

Serious consideration

Trade coaches with Kentucky. Both schools get Hall of Fame coaches and everybody will be happy for a year.

Pearl's squad sh7t themselves today, will be interesting to see if he can reload after crashing out of the number one team ranking and getting blown out in the second round of the NCAA tourney with a one and done in the SEC tournament

They sure don’t need your support. The team is doing just fine and we will see how hungry these young guys are to get better. Z was shooting but he missed as did everyone else. He has a contagious personality for winning. Go Vols!

UT has a crappy basketball program? I beg to differ. We've got a good program. Not great but good.
We've been past the SS exactly once and that was by one game. So none of our coaches has excelled in the NCAAT. All things considered I'd put Barnes as the best although there's a strong argument for Mears.

Mears was 0-4 in the NCAA Tournament with that shocking loss to Virginia Military Institute in 1976.

I wouldn't be happy losing again in the 2nd round but since he did coach them to the Sec tourney championship win, something I have never been alive for , it takes my anger away. I just want a deeper run next year. They should have almost all back. Plus hopefully the big man from Morehead st will go into portal and come to Ut

Mears lost to Dayton in 1967 (Dayton ended up as National Runner-Up to UCLA)
Mears lost to VMI (King didnt play due to injury)
Mears lost to Big East Champ Syracuse in OT in the first round.

Those were Mears NCAA appearences. Mears had 7 2nd place SEC finishes (large majority to Ky) where he didnt go to the NCAA due to rules then. He also had a SEC Co-champions team that didnt go cause they lost 2 1 pt games to Ky and Ky got the tiebreaker. Based on Mears era, this season would have been Barnes first NCAA appearence (you could make an argument RB has never been yet since Mears never had a shot to win a SECT & barnes didnt win the SEC reg season) and there wouldnt have been a Longwood or 13 loss Michigan to play. Comparing Barnes record to Mears in apples and oranges. Different era with completely different rules.

No. Bruce was 4-9 vs UK while at TN.

2005/6: 1-1 (lost at home, won at KY)
2006/7: 1-1 (won at home, lost at KY)
2007/8: 1-1 (won at home, lost at KY)
2008/9: 0-2 (lost at home and at KY)
2009/10: 1-2 (won at home, lost at KY, lost at SECT)
2010/11: 0-2 (lost at home and at KY)

At KY: 1-5
Home: 3-3
Neutral (SECT): 0-1
Overall: 4-9
THEN……since Bruce had arrived at Auburn….he has 6 wins to Cal’s 8 wins. So he is paid pretty damn good to have a combined 10 Wins 17 Losses Combined Total since he began coaching in the SEC.

Again Rick Barnes has his flaws. All HC’s do. He beats Kentucky. You could argue he is now on the “OWN’s KENTUCKY” upward trend with 10-17 record vs KING CAL.

Barnes will surpass 800 wins here before he retires. There’s still time for us.

I don't think Pearl's records against Cal at UK is as big of a deal. To me it was Pearl going 3-5 against Smith/Gillispie and especially the 1-3 against Gillispie.

That’s what I was trying to say. He was trash against talented Kentucky teams and above average HCs. Then flip the script…Barnes is better with less talented Tennessee teams vs mini-NBA rostered Kentucky teams with a great HC.
Congrats to Pearl and his Final 4. He may never see another too.

Don’t forget that Pearl had to win 4 games in the SEC tourney to make his FF run. Really was a fortunate and lucky run.
