I think he'll be back too unless the season really tanks. If the Vols are an NCAA bubble team again and just miss, they'll keep him. Remember, the AD is not Dave Hart. Dave Hart is merely an administrative puppet for Jimmy Cheek. Cheek couldn't care less about the athletic programs, especially since he's not getting the money he once got from it. He would rather see us go low budget on coaches and hover around a break even AD than gamble on a big time coaches.
Take a step back for one min and look at things. You bring Cuonzo in and pay him towards the bottom of what SEC coaches and D1 coaches in general make, the fan base always rally around the new coach thus increases excitement around the program resulting in increased revenue. Coach is given a pass for year one (Year Zero in Dooley time). Second year average results, rumblings start, still general optimism about the future. Third year, team shows no improvement, excuses are waning, fans become disinterested, revenue drops, coach becomes on the hot seat. Fourth year (if the coach is fortunate enough to get it) because he's on the hot seat, recruiting has begun to fall off. Another sub-par year. Coach is fired. And the cycle repeats itself. Wash, Rinse, Repeat.
So my point is, does it really matter whether Martin gets fired? Chances are they'll go out and make a hire that we'll all have to run to Google to figure out who the coach is. Same thing in football. Let's not kid ourselves, Coach Butch Jones appears to be a great hire. But if it turns out that way it would be because of shear luck. He was way down the list of coaches that we were told that we attempted to hire. Until there are changes at the top at UTK, you can expect the same stuff we've been getting.
