Well, that ten years without a berth in the SECCG has a strong possibility of becoming a reality.

When was Alabama's last appearance pre-Saban?

This idea that you have to be an 8-win team for a while and gradually build up to winning titles is one of the dumbest ones out there. When we actually hire a great coach, our record 5 years earlier isn't going to matter.

1.) Surely you can't be serious that you'd be ok if we had 5 win seasons 9 out of 10 years, but won that 10th.
2.) Winning 5 games that many seasons will kill recruiting, so the odds are greatly against you to win that 10th.
3.) Even if by some miracle it happened, due to #2, that win would probably be due to cheating, ie Auburn, and then it wouldn't have mattered anyways, and then be set back even more due to NCAA sanctions.

I wonder what our all time wins would look like after 20 years of 5 win seasons. I wonder what we would rank then.

Why would we ever go 20 years without a bowl game?

Well I took this quote from you

"I'd rather win it once a decade than go and lose every single year. You might take comfort in "knowing that we are consistently good," but when they make trophies for that, let me know."

Then add the quote by whobethis16

And that made me think ... We would have 2 NC's, but

What would our all time record be after 20 years?

What would we be ranked after 20 years?

Let me get this straight: you would trade a national championship to be higher on the wins list?

That's hard to say to be honest.

I read an article in sporting news several years ago on who was the greatest baseball franchise. The top 2 were the Yanks and Dodgers. The yanks have more championships but still ranked #2. The Dodger's won because overall year in and year out they were more stable with a championship thrown in here and there. I don't remember all the stats why, but I do remember the Dodgers never had a season below .500 and always managed to keep home game attendance up. They noted with all ups and downs the game attendance was badly hurt during the down years while the Yanks rebuilt.

It's hard to keep attendance up if you're only winning 5-7 games per season vs winning 9-10 with SECCG appearances and hope of a NC.

Are we just going for a NC every ten years with several down years in between as you propose or do we try for stability and build a strong franchise? I say you build your franchise.

Have you ever coached any team sport at any level?

Ok, let's put it this way. No way for me to prove you did or didn't look it up, but who won the NC in 1994? 1993? 1970? But on the other side, who are the programs with the most wins? That second part of the question is much easier to remember than who won a title.
