I'd Like To Thank Sean Miller For Proving My Point.

Tobias Harris reminds me a lot of Derrick Williams. I think an extra year could really help Tobias like it did Williams.

Exactly. They threw out their opening and came back with a mid major guy who could clearly coach but had plenty of question marks.

They got turned down by Tim Floyd, Jamie Dixon, Rick Pitino, and Rick Barnes. It's not like they just picked up the phone and grabbed their first choice.

The fact that their list started with those names and our starts with Shaka Smart, Gregg Marshall, Chris Mooney, Lawrence Frank and Anthony Grant should be evidence enough of the state of the two programs, prestige wise.

Sean Miller was hardly chopped liver, was coming off of 4 straight NCAA's, an elite eight and a sweet sixteen.

Unless you agree with Griff that we are after Dixon and J. Wright

You think high school players are more concerned with pre-1985? Would be like saying the best black college player is interested in Rupp.
Not sure the point. Dude was touting their history as the driving force behind hiring a coach from Xavier.

No, it was an indication that Jim Livengood was too stupid to realize most coaches are smart enough to realize that Arizona didn't just start playing basketball when Lute arrived in Tucson.

Any idiot can run out and target a bunch of big names and get politely laughed at. Hell, Vegas has done it in every coaching search since Tark left.

If you honestly think that Arizona and Tennessee are on par as far as basketball tradition is concerned, then I have grossly overestimated your basketball prowess.

Gotcha, but high school players that see some of the athletes and success that happened at Arizona over the past 25 years is more important than history pre-1985. I wasn't trying to prove his point, but they have more working for than IMO.

Great point. Look how all those coaches rushed to take the job at that historical empire in the desert. Hell, it only took them a week and a half and three rejections before they finally convinced Miller to take the job. Just because you think history consists of things that happened after the Dukes of Hazzard went off the air doesn't mean the guys in the coaching profession are similarly shortsighted.

They do, but their circumstances at that time sucked and they didn't have some overwhelming history to lean on in hiring q coach.

The original point was tha hiring the right guy, big name or no, can make a basketball program work. AZ did it with a mid major guy in limited demand.

So which is it? It's easier for them to find a coach because they're winning or it's harder because nobody wants to try to live up to a legend?

I agree with that. However, but their circumstances weren't as bad as you say. They benefitted that their rival had severe problems, and they picked up their star recruits. That's some pretty good circumstances/luck. If USC had not had their situation, then we are talking a Indiana-type rebuilding (not as bad but close). If Scotty, Tobias, and Chris Jones are not here next year then it will be rough on whoever comes in. Then again, if you get the right coach then all 3 could be here so it can work either way.

There are a handful of schools who can use their historical place on the sport's ladder to draw a coach. Arizona is most certainly not one of them. They're UCONN with dry heat.
