If Barnes were to retire…

McDermott has been at Creighton so long now that I think it would take a blue blood offer to lure him away. I don’t think he’s gettable for us. Very good coach though.

Nate Oats would come in the blink of an eye, they are second fiddle forever in Tuscaloosa, camped out in the worn out and old Coleman Coliseum which with Stegman, the Hump and Memorial in Nashville are the old barns of the SEC.
Lol he isn’t leaving Bama for us. You people who keep pushing this are Capital D Delusional.

if I’m Danny White I find out what it would take to get Greg McDermott to leave Creighton. The guy’s a fantastic coach and would be an amazing fit after CRB.

Yeah, it may not be possible to get GM to leave Creighton, but that’s where I’d start.
He's too old to me.

I also would hope that given the standing of our program, Danny White would make money no issue and pursue top names to try to make a splash.

Of all the coaches I wish could follow Barnes, I would want Scott Drew and I would offer whatever it took to get him from Baylor.

Of course I would not mind someone like Chris Beard either. We are either going to face him year in and out at Ole Miss or give him a better program/resource environment than they have in Oxford.

No offsense to McDermott, but that would feel like a settling hire.... I wouldn't mind it, but I also wouldn't be thrilled if that was our top target out of the gate.

Rick Barnes makes almost $6m a year.... I would want that to be the starting point for our next coach.

Drew, like Oats, said no to Kentucky. Zero chance of him coming here.

We are not going to spend 6m a year on the next coach. We will spend 3m and then bump him to 6m if he wins. That’s the UT way. I don’t think we’re a good enough job to attract a coach worth paying 6m out of the gate anyway.

This notion that they said no to Kentucky and comparing that opening to ours is pretty clownish..... Kentucky basically ran Cal off.... They figured they could roll the dice and throw their weight around to get anyone they wanted because "Who will say no to us if Kentucky wants them"

Tennessee would have an opening due to Barnes retiring and a stable program... That is a complete 180 from why Kentucky had an opening.

And this idea that the "Tennessee way" is to pay cheap and give a pay raise seems absurd specifically when it comes to basketball and who the AD and admin was when Barnes flirted with UCLA.

The more people invoke the Kentucky job last year as a reason for why someone shouldn't be considered are delusional.

@SGMVols on another note, I took a look at highest paid coaches.

Current Pay for Barnes - $5.8m

I found a few coaches who make a lot less surprisingly given their performance:

-Chris Beard: $5 million
-Fred Hoiberg: $4.75 million
-Dusty May: $3.6 million
-TJ Otzelberger: $3.5 million

Even if we went under $5m to hire the next coach, there are some guys making a lot less than that that would easily be a splash hire if we got them.

The eye popping number to me is Iowa State only paying TJ $3.5m.....

Not really delusional at all. It’s just one of many examples of elite programs not just able to throw around money and name. Duke, UNC, Arizona, Ohio State, have recently hired assistants. Florida, Kentucky, Louisville, Iowa State, Michigan, LSU, OU, and basically Indiana (Devries was only at WV one year) hired mid major coaches.

Everyone has money and can pay to match. This has been the way to hire coaches unless someone like Beard or Pitino have to be rehabbed.

Otzelberger just signed an extension and raise to over $4 million in base pay, which I assume he also had some other supplemental pay. Probably with bonuses gets him to at 4.5 or more.

May just got bumped to 4.65 base as well.

I do not disagree with this, but I also believe there are coaches who look at it thru the lenses of program standing if the money is the same or better.

Would someone like Otzelberger really turn Tennessee down if they were offering a $2m increase in pay (which would also be less than Barnes' current number)?

I have full faith in Danny White to make a solid hire / have a solid succession plan, but I ado hope he doesn't settle on the mid major route out of the gate.

Didn't see that, but thanks for sharing. I did read this though:

"Interestingly, his buyout was dropped from $18,225,000 to just $4 million. It cuts down even further to $2 million if Pollard is no longer the athletics director at Iowa State."

Otzelberger is from the Midwest. ISU would still give him some raise, and sometimes several hundred thousand does not sway someone from their comfort zone.

The Lady Vols are a blue blood, and he hired a young coach with one year of D1 experience. He found a gem. That’s what he does. Unless there is a high level P5 coach not liking his current AD or situation, I expect it to be pretty similar. Otzelberger would be a home run.

If we kept things as is and gave TJ O the same number and contract Barnes has, would you be happy with him as a new coach?

Don’t say you weren’t warned when we end up with Bucky McMillan or similar.
