If Smith isn't mediocre, what makes him above mediocre? Is it the single championship? Is it the winning a championship with a team given to him to win a championship? Is it the half-assed recruiting he did for years? What exactly are you saying makes him great? Ask any Kentucky fan and they will tell you he was mediocre AND THEY ARE RIGHT. He walked into a GREAT situation and only watched it go down hill.
I don't recall specific analyst names but several all talked about his underachievement and it was time for him to go when he left Kentucky. They all knew Kentucky was the best program in the country and Tubby Smith couldn't live up to those expectations.
He's NOT a hot commodity. Why do you think his primary option was Minnesota??? MINNESOTA??? Their #1 sports program is HOCKEY.
Try reading his career stats before making yourself look even dumber.
He wouldn't be mine either. However, it's beyond retarded to act as if he's some kind of joke when his career accomplishments absolutely blow Pearl's out of the water.
Sweet 16???? Are you serious? Is that something special now?
By the way, I never said Pearl was anything special either. No, he doesn't compare to Smith. That doesn't make Tubby Smith great.
The departure was great for both parties. Tubby didn't fit in as well with Lexington and everyone wanted a coach who could recruit the biggest stars. Both Tubby and Kentucky have benefited from leaving each other. There's no way Tubby is close to being a mediocre coach.
Yes He was...He was head coach a div 2 school for 9 years and won the national title with Southern Indiana and was head coach at div 1 Milwaukee for 5 years setting the all time wins record for that school in that period of time prior to taking the Tennessee job....I would say that makes him established :good!:
I'll say this, hiring Tubby Smith is the sort of move that would go a long way towards rebranding Tennessee as a program that takes men's basketball seriously. The widespread perception is still that we're a gimmick and a novelty, coached by a chestpainter. Hiring a guy with the gravitas of Smith would announce that Tennessee is in men's basketball to stay.
