If I can't have Peyton at QB...

I would take Casey back in a heartbeat. He is one of the all-time great Vol QBs and should never be forgotten.

The hate was the sole product of a spoiled fan base. I will admit that I was just as guilty as anyone.

Honestly, when I look back at the way I hated on Casey back in the day I'm ashamed. It really humbled me when it comes to bashing players or questioning their heart.

But 99 is right. We were still loaded with NFL talent during his time. You can question whether or not the team gelled or not but to say he did more with less is stretching it.

where was the loads of NFL talent on the 2003 team? or the 2002 team for that matter?

That rainy afternoon versus the Gators and the fumbled handoff against UGA are my only issues with Clausen. Both resulted in blowouts.

The Florida rain game is my fault. A very close friend got married that day and even though I had her permission to miss her wedding in order to go to the game, it was still karma against me. Losing wasn't enough torture, it had to be in a downpour for the entire afternoon.

Absolutely. After Stallworth, Written, and Washington left he played with a cast that belonged on a milk carton. Two road wins at the Swamp, one in Miami, 6 overtimes against Arkansas with a seperated shoulder, 4 and 23 conversion while trailing in overtime in Tuscaloosa. The kid was a straight baller.

I've never understood the hatred he gets. No one accomplished more with less than Casey did here.

Kid doesn't interview well and comes across stupid. I have since changed my opine of him after seeing everything that came afterward. Would give my eyeteeth to have him back. The kid couldn't talk into a mike but damn he could JUST WIN BABY!

He was inconsistent at times, but I always liked "The Iceman".

If it weren't for one poor quarter against LSU in 2001, he'd probably be remembered as the guy that brought us a 2nd national championship in 4 years.

Seriously doubt this. I would have liked to find out but I think that Miami team would have beaten us.

Casey was a good qb for us. His biggest downfall was that he didnt work hard off the field though, especially in weight room. There were several stories that he actually got weaker while at tennessee. If he would have gotten stronger, he would have made it in nfl.

Interesting you say that. He seems to have gotten less mobile and stiffer in his last two seasons.

In fact, it seemed that every QB from Peyton fwd (minus Tee) got noticeably less mobile as they became upperclassmen. Remember how mobile Ainge seemed as a freshman? Remember Crompton taking off out of the pocket and clocking that LSU DB in open field? Then remember how stoic each looked as JR/SR?

I know that QBs are the "franchise" player for any successful team. Therefore a coach will do what he can to keep them safe. But, that mobility can often kill a defense when they've played perfect coverage. Losing it hurts a lot imo.

13-1 on the opponent's home field during his career at UT. Not sure that has been matched by anyone at UT, past or present.

I'm not sure if any quarterback at Tennessee or elsewhere, for that matter, has led his team to victories over Notre Dame, Alabama, Florida and Michigan in the same season, which Casey did in 2001.

Erik Ainge was much better than what he gets credit for around here as well.

if you take Rasputin out of the Ainge equation here on VN, I think Ainge gets about what he deserved. A lot of pretty goods with a few bads.

If I can't have Peyton at Qb, I'd take Tony Robinson, Tee Martin, Andy Kelly, Condredge Holloway, or Alan Cockrell.

Then I'd take Bobby Scott, Dewey Warren, Heath Shuler, Bray, Ainge and either Jeff Francis, Charley Fulton, Jeff Olszewski or Bubba Wyche. After that, I might take C.Clausen.

26 Vols were Drafted from 2003-2007 (all drafts that featured players that would/could have played with Clausen). You can argue about how many of those made an impact in the NFL but they obviously did enough in college to get drafted.

Heck, the 2003 draft (2002 season) had EIGHT Vols drafted which tied with Miami and FL for most from one school.

The Clausen era was deeper than you give it credit for.

AK and Condredge are the only ones I'd consider over Casey. Tee Martin QBd our national championship team, but he had way more help than Casey did even as a freshman and sophomore.
